Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

So, yesterday I actually ate some real pasta.  I'd been craving it since rawgust and I used to eat lots of pasta and you know what?  It didn't taste that good to me.  I didn't even finish it, though I'm sure the squirrels outside appreciated that.  Today through Sunday will be entirely raw.  I had been at about 75% raw since rawgust but sort of slacked off it a bit (probably to less than 50%) since I went to Connecticut last week.  The farther I get away from it the worse I feel.  Time to get back on the carrot truck.

Is anyone out there still eating raw?

I'm still rawing *roar* *lol* but as the weather gets colder up here I'm eating more and more cooked foods--which actually isn't such a bad thing for me...I'm still losing weight. My day pretty much goes like this: Breakfast--raw smoothie Lunch: Raw salad or fruits and veggies Dinner: Rice with sprouted tortillias or hummus and pita. and lately I have been craving chocolate like crazy so I usually end up eating chocolate soy cream or cookies or something...I'm probably 50/50 now.

Storm, et al.

I made the kale salad! But I used black kale (so beautiful). I didn't have any fancy raspberry stuff or tarragon...so I just made a vinaigrette with lemon, oil, and some vinegars..plus a little thyme, and added tomato and avocado. It's good! I think the avocado makes it, though..

The avocado definitely makes it!  It's really kind of blah without it, IMO.

I'm still doing about 60-70% raw, though I do have days here and there where it's lower.  I'd like to get it back up to 80%, but I've been a bit lazy in the kitchen lately.

I went back on the raw this week.  It takes more planning, but I was slipping back into old eating habits and that will never do.
VHZ, how did your raw experiment go?

I know this thread is essentially "dead", but I have to say, it's nice to see more raw recipes being posted on this site.

Storm- those look GOOD!

I posted a raw recipe a couple weeks ago that hasn't shown up yet.  I updated my raw green soup recipe though!

That red pepper soup looks yummy!  I've been eating mostly raw lately and loving corn chowders.

Has anyone ever made a raw butternut squash soup?  Or mushroom?

I saw your update.  I've made that soup several times and it is sooo good.  I, too, have submitted a couple of raw recipes that haven't shown up yet.  I'm sure Yvette will get to them eventually.

No, but oddly enough, I was wondering just the other day if goneraw had a recipe for butternut squash soup.  I think I shall go find out.

EDIT:
There are two mushroom soup recipes and one butternut squash soup recipe on goneraw.

Thanks Storm!  Have you tried the butternut soup yet?  I have three squash in my kitchen, I may try it myself.

Also...I found that some chickpeas I had soaked and drained started sprouting in my fridge!  I have done my fair share of sprouting and soaking but never had much luck with chickpeas before.  I didn't know how to eat them so I just whipped them up into Mexican flavored salad and WOW they are GOOD.

I'm going to try to sprout more, hopefully it will work again.  When I used to try to sprout them they just got nasty and stinky.

No, I haven't tried the butternut squash soup yet, but I'm thinking I might this weekend.

Congrats on your bean sprouting success.  I've never had much luck sprouting beans.  They always seem to go rancid.

Hey Rawbies!

I'm thinking about doing another raw stint between the holidays--right now I'm thinking from Novembem 16 to December 20--that would be 5 weeks (so 1 week longer than rawgust).

I know this is a really hard time to do this given that in most places it is cold and not a lot of fresh produce is available, and also--it's the holidays! Most people are knee deep in baked goods--but I think this could be a good test of will power and endurance--plus, you know you will be keeping off those lbs by staying far away from the regular holiday fare!

So, any takers wanna Rawoliday with me? Let me know!!

You know I'm in Capture!  My file of raw recipes has grown significantly since Rawgust and I'm ready to go!!  I feel like I have an advantage over you northerners because we southerners basically have a year-round growing season.  I have tomatoes, cucumbers, romaine, and peppers in my garden now.  I wish I could ship some up to you!  I'm marking my calendar for November 16.

Awesome Storm! Yeah--you defintelly do have an advantage--but thankfully in my area we have a farmers market that goes year round, and Whole Foods is pretty good about getting fresh, organinc produce in!! I think this time I'm going to do almost entirely whole raw--all those recipes are just really overwhelming and time consuming--but there are a few I'll keep on the meal rotation! Last night I was thinking of trying a carrot "cake" like bread with shredded/processed carrots with some groud flax, raisins and agave nectar! Doesn't that sound good? I think it might make up like a sweet cracker in the dehydrator! I'm going to test it out soon!!

I'm betting right now that the bulk 0f my meals will be the following--

banana smoothies
banana "ice cream" so freaking good!
salads
whole fruits and veggies
soup
nuts

I just hope I'm more prepared this time--I was getting pretty crazy 2 weeks in last time and by the end I was feeling the strain of an all raw diet and I completly lost my appitite...dang...why am I doing ths again? *lol* No, I know it will be a great experience, and doing it over the holidays will save me from those evil binges of holiday food! It's going to be awesome!!! *I'm just gonna keep saying that till i believe it*

I'm really looking forward to doing this again and I'm so glad you suggested it. Ever since Rawgust I've been hitting goneraw on a regular basis collecting more and more and more raw recipes.  Some I've tried out and some I haven't.  I'm definitely going to acquire a food processor this time and maybe a juicer too.  My crappy little blender took quite a beating last time, I can't believe it is still functional.  I just got a mandolin slicer last week so I'll be good to go by the 16th!
