Raw Chit-Chat!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!
I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?
Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?
OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I forgot to add that after it had dried for a few hours and was kind of soft-hard, I cut them into bar shapes and continued drying them that way. I didn't know if they would crack weird if I let them dry all of the way before cutting them.
I got the recipe from Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook. I like the book. I've made three things out of it already (I've had it for less than a month), which might be the most I've used any recipe book. (I suppose the way I posted it is copyright okay.)
3 cups golden flax seed, ground
2 large red bell peppers
2-3 cloves garlic
1/4 cup raisins
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
Blend them together, spread it on dehydrator sheets, and dry for 16-20 hours at 110 F.
Ooooo, cool....yours has raisins. I'm going to have to try it now.
One more thing (again).
I ground the flaxseed seperately. Then I blended the other ingredients together until it was a liquid, and stirred that into the flaxseed.

oh good. thats what i did. they're in the dehydrator now. the "batter" tasted really good!!! im way excited. the raw version of those macaroons are in the dehydrator too. im thinking of making a chocolate something or other, drizzling some on top and putting them in the freezer after they dehydrate. MMM! maybe a goji/cacao sauce. yum!
Here's the raw food I've made. It's all from Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook. Why didn't they call it a "recipe" book, instead of a "cook" book, if it's raw?
Rice Crispy Treats.
These are really good. I put them on the sheet to see if I could dry them, but took them out a couple of hours later. It's basically a combination of buckwheat, sunflower seeds, and agave nectar. They stay soft, but "harden up" a bit as the buckwheat absorbs the moisture. These are super quick to put together, because nothing is soaked first. I made them yesterday and they taste better today, so they're a make-ahead cookie as well.
Golden Flax Crackers
I'm not a fan of flax, but I like these. I thnk it's the bell pepper and garlic that pull it together.
Sunrise Cereal
It's still drying, but I think this will be my least favorite recipe of the three. The ingredients are almonds, macadamia nuts, cashews, raisins, goji berries, and cranberries. The last two were supposed to be persimmons and cherries, but I couldn't find either so I subbed. I can't imagine what I'd be doing that I would need so much concentrated energy. And it's not clumping. I guess instead of using it as a cereal it'd be something I could sprinkle on a salad.
My flax seed crackers are in the dehydrator. In 20 hours we'll see how my first time went.
It's powdered flax seed, with red bell pepper and garlic 'n stuff.
That sounds a lot like the ones I make. Where did your recipe come from or is it your own concoction? I sort of combined two other recipes I found online.
I had previously tried going raw for a week with a couple of other ladies here, but I was ill prepared (no dehydrator) and only lasted four days. I'm very interested to follow your progress, Capture. I have quite a few raw recipes I searched out during my attempt. I'd be happy to send them to you if you're interested.
I would love your recipes Storm! That would be awesome!!!
You guys are more than welcome to email me capture79 at gmail dot com or feel free to leave raw recipes on my Raw! blog. I will happily take your recipes!
I have my raw cereal dehydrating now--I ended up putting it on foil--I know this is not a great option as it limits the air flow, but I had no other option since I haven't been able to get either teflex sheets or the "fruit roll up tray" for my craptastic machine. I did make some good banana chips and my blueberries are coming along, so I am feeling good about it! I'll just have to watch thecereal and rotate it alot!
In other news--my carmea is on the fritz and I'm worried I won't be able to take pics--hopefully I'll have it fixed by Friday!
I was right about the Sunrise Cereal.
1/2 pound almonds
1/2 pound macadamia nuts
1/2 pound cashews
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup goji
1/2 cup dried cranberries
2 tablespoons agave nectar
lemon zest
I don't know what to use it for now. I don't do anything that would require such dense energy.

is that recipe one serving? shesh.
Haha, I was wondering the same thing.
i don't think there is anything wrong with that food (in terms of density).
the reason it's so high in cals and fat is the nuts and you needs nuts when eating raw.
i want to do raw again for a while, too.
Oh. My. God.
I think I'll pass on that cereal--that calorie count is just too out of control for me to even handle...That's like 3 1/2 days worth of calories for me! Yikes!
The cereal I'm making right now is blueberries, bananas, oat groats, flax seed, sesame seeds and pecans with agave nectar all done up fancy like in the dehydrator. My bananas are done, my blueberries are half way there and the rest of it is all mixed together drying out nicely!
Oh holler you guys! I made the yummiest raw drink today!
Water melon with frozen blueberries in the blender!!!! It is way beyond awesome--I think it would be fabulous with vodka or gin or even some white wine! I made a big thing of it up and layed out in the sun and pretended I was in hawaii...then I got sad when a cloud covered up the sun and I realized I was still in Michigan...awwwww *sad face*
1. I have frozen blueberries. *drool*
2. The calorie count was for the whole batch. I got to thinking that I soaked the nuts overnight. Unless they become magical after sitting eight hours in water, I basically could have just chopped the nuts and dried fruit and called it a day. I'm not sure why I first soaked them and am now dehydrating them for 14 hours.

*Drool* that looks great! I am also loving www.goneraw.com I have been getting a lot of questions answered and picking up raw recipes left and right! It's not as organized as vegweb--and the forum community seems a bit random--but it's a great resource!!
I even have a vanilla bean! I'm so all over that (next weekend).
