Let's talk about running!

This thread is for talking about marathon training, training for other races, or anything to do with running!  Weeeeee!

Let's see.  Yesterday was my first official day of training.  I was supposed to go six miles, but I made a wrong turn and I think it was closer to eight or nine.  So, I'm already ahead of the game?  Hahaha.

I'm glad you made this an "official" thread! Fun stuff! I haven't ran since Wednesday & that was only like 3 miles. I got sick (like weird 24hour flu) after my 12 miler last Sat & am waiting to feel 100% before running again.

So, is this your first marathon, Lisa?  It is mine.  I've only done half's before.

Also, feel better!

Oh, KMK, you and your "official" clubs. Fun!

Yesterday I rode my bike up to the nature center and ran on the trails there. I ran for an hour so maybe about 6-7 miles. It was beautiful, but SO HOT. I took my tank top off and wrung it out before I rode home. Why, oh why do I sweat more than normal people???!

Today I plan to go for a pleasant run later in the afternoon, hopefully after it cools off a little.

LAD, did you decide which marathon you're gonna do? Did you get into NYC??!

I'm going to run the OBX (Outer Banks, NC) Marathon. I rented a dog friendly cottage for the whole weekend so Smooch & I can bring DIni & Molly for a mini vaca.

This won't be my first. I ran Philly in 2005 & 2006. The first time I enjoyed it. The second, not so much. I started too fast & mentally bonked at about the halfway point. It was really bad. I'm lucky a friend from my running club caught up to me around then & knew how to handle those kinds of breakdowns. I think I would have quit if it wasn't for her.

I've always wanted to be able to run.... I have NO endurance when it comes to running and don't really understand why? I can do high impact aerobics for at least an hour but with running I get tired so fast.... I don't know if it's a mental block or what? Any suggestions or tips from the runners?

I do not run..but I have an "yay" story about our most famous run.

Every August for the past 10 or so years Maine has the "Beach to Beacon" run 10k?  It attracts elite runners from around the world.  It was held this past weekend and the female 1st place winner was a
41-year-old Edith Musai from kenya.  She is 41 and she kicked some major butt on all of the young truly awesome runners.

You are probably just running too fast. Think of it more as jogging & go at a slow pace, one where you can talk if you want. If you need to, take a one minute walk break after every five minutes of running. If you keep at it, it will come to you.

I ran about 3 miles yesterday barefoot, but this was WAY TOO FAR to run barefoot for the first run after a long time. The total distance of the trip was about 5 1/2 miles. Later I biked..a few miles.

Pain.

Just curious , what is the surface you are running on?  I think I would be afraid of glass or some other sharp object becoming implanted in my foot. :'( Walking barefoot is less scary because I can always keep an eye out but running is obviously faster and more difficult to catch the sharps.

I run A LOT when I skimboard (which is everday unless it's severely lightning)... does this count?

DISCLAIMER: The pain was due to me running too far without properly conditioning my feet, consistently.

I know it can seem quite daunting to think about running barefoot. I have not yet  been able to consistently condition my feet (as P has), but I really love running barefoot. The absolute KEY is to relax your body, and to especially focus on relaxing your ankles and feet. When they become tense, or when you start to lose your form...you should stop. This is when things start to hurt the soles of your feet. We run on the sidewalk, orasphalt when crossing over. You just have to be cautious of where you are going. When you do step on pebbles, and such things..they easily fall off (especially w/ good conditioning). The times when I've had problems it's been b/c I was doing something I shouldn't have (walking barefoot when it was too cold, and feet could not sense...or running too far).

I've found that when I'm doing it properly, my soles are less sore after running, than walking. Walking causes bearing down of more weight..and running is lighter. If you properly relax...you will find that it is MUCH easier to run. Granted, we are jogging fairly slowly, but I do not get out of breath when I run barefoot, really at all. There is so much less exertion!

If you already walk barefoot, I say just trying jogging a very short distance. Focus on relaxing (totally relaxing your body), and it will move in the proper form. Yesterday, I really just did way too much..and completely lost my form to where my feet were slapping down. I knew I had to stop then. Take it really slow.

Grass feels nice after being on pavement..but I like running on pavement more than grass b/c of the smoothness. Grass can even have more painful things..like sticks/not visible rocks or pebbles/pine cones or pine needles. On the sidewalk..you can see everything, and it's smooth. If you are relaxing..you don't really need to move to avoid things, but if you see something (like a piece of glass/sharp rock)..you can definitely intentionally avoid that.

Just think about sometimes when you hear/see people running by..their shoes smacking down on the sidewalk..all of that is lost energy..and more exertion for your body..and more weight! This is definitely related to bad form though, sometimes it's worse than others.

Ask me any other questions you have!  ;)b

WHen I saw this I was like ROV club?

Where I work, an ROV is "Remotely Operated Vehicle" and are these remote controlled robots used to do underwater work on subsea equipment at 6000 foot water depths.

(picture I found on the internet of an ROV working on what looks like a subsea tree.)  They are about the size of VW beetles.

Ha ha!  ROV's rock!

i am trying to get back into running since i can't keep up long distance bike rides all of the time since they take so long. i am not 'barefooting' per-se, but i have those vibram five fingers shoes that basically feel like you are barefoot but with protection that i am trying to start running in. last time i ran in them for 25 minutes which was a MISTAKE. my calves were so sore. then a couple days ago i ran for only about 1.5 miles and could tell i was going to get sore if i kept going so i walked the rest of the way (i started on a four mile loop). hummm... still trying to get used to it, hopefully i can.

Sounds good!  ;)b ;)b

How do they feel? Do your feet get all sweaty? Are they breathable?

???

Those shoes are funny looking.  Do you wear the them just for running or all the time.  For some reason they remind me of Fred Flintstone feet ;D

they feel great. not sweaty or anything at all. i really enjoy them, actually.

i pretty much will wear them anytime and i find them very ugly, too, but i don't really care what i wear so i wear them anyway. it is crazy how many compliments i have gotten on them, though, people are like "cute shoes" and i reply with something along the lines of "are you kidding?", but i dunno... i think just because they are something different.

so it is normal to get sore calves when you first start out barefoot(ish)?

I'm totally going to get a pair of those shoes!!! I can't tell you how many times I have sliced my foot wide open skimboarding. I'm sorry, but those things do look pretty cool hespedal...

Those shoes sound very interesting!

I think it is normal for calf soreness..b/c they are basically being used in a whole new way. There is no pushing off..so they are constantly stretched (in a good way). My calves have always gotten really sore after the first run (now and before barefoot), but P confirmed that he remembers soreness in the beginning (barefoot). That's another great thing about barefoot running...more muscle usage! I think it just takes a bit of time to stretch out.

:)

definitely get them for water use! they rock for that. i also can throw them in the washer and dryer if i want.

ok, good to know. i think i will go for another run tomorrow if i don't decide to have a short (30 mile) bike ride. or maybe i will do both, time-permitting.
