No wine for 6 weeks!

I've decided that my drinking has become a problem. I find myself opening a bottle of wine every day when i get home from work and slowly finishing it until the time i go to sleep. Sometimes I'll drink a bottle or two (or sometimes three) with my roommate while we watch tv together. I've also put on a lot of weight in the past 6 months and I'm attributing the bulk of it to my excess wine consumption.

I'm now on day 3 without wine and I honestly did not expect to be this difficult. My body will thank me as I get back into shape (just started hitting the gym 5 times a week and I've already lost 4 pounds in the past week and a half!) and I hope i can limit my wine intake to two bottles per week. This will also help increase my saving money.

Anyway, I guess i came here for support and encouragement. Happy day

day 5! It has been difficult, but not so bad. Today has been a lot better than any of the four previous days I've been wine-free. Thank you guys for the support!

Karatekid, how are you doing?

I just read this thread for the first time.  secondbase, I think you said you worked 10 or 12 hour shifts.  Counting in the commute, I work 13 to 14 hour days and completely understand how nice it is to get home and relax.  I hope you have found something relaxing to replace wine.  I save up my stress and walk it out on the weekends at a nearby lake.

I eat pretty healthy, but I couldn't kick Diet Coke.  I finally quit.  I can tell my body doesn't need it anymore, but I get a small headache whenever I hear someone open a soda can.  I still miss the routine of it and I definitely miss the buzz, even though I'm happy I quit.

I'm writing this on Day 6, which means you're closing in on the end of your first week.  Yay!

I did pretty good. I went two days with no beer or anything. I had a REALLY good class last night. Felt really good after class (a little sore, but not a problem). Now I'm "treating" myself with a refreshing beer (I only bought a 12 pack ;) ).

Good job to you too then!  It's technically the weekend now, right?  ;)

I've done a month of drinks on Friday night only & here's the results: I've taken off 9 pounds, I sleep better, I approach my workouts with a better attitude & I really look forward to Friday night & I enjoy my drinks more!  ;D

It takes some discipline, but after a few weeks, it's much easier!

Thanks, Lezly! I'm glad to hear that. I can loose weight for my wedding, get more from my workouts AND still enjoy a drink or three on fridays. Coolness! :D Now I have my mind made up to go for it ;)

Excellent! That's good to hear. It's nice to be in control of things rather than things being in control of you.  ;)

good luck and props to you!  I am wrestliing with the nicotine monster and I totally get your desire to control the situation before it begins to control you.

cigarettes suck; I hate them

I'd say I'm doing "OK" still smoking occasionally but only when there is alcohol involved or a particularly stressful family wedding (then of course, add the alcohol...) but even my kid sister (who doesn't smoke) was smoking that night.
At some point I'm going to have to abandon my little crutch.  At least the only time I smoke now, I mean it.
I've considered following secondbase's lead and lay off the booze, at least until I can make it a few weeks without threatening people to "give me a smoke or the puppy dies!"  (only a joke)

This is WAY harder than I ever thought it would be.  Thanks for the happy thoughts.  I'll be leaving for a meditation retreat next week that, for obvious reasons will be alcohol and cigarette free.  Good for nutdragon.

Kudos!!!

I'm alcohol free for 10 years.  Don't miss it.

Yeah, I really don't think gotskates was being offensive. Just pointing out that wine isn't good for you...

Which it isn't. Appears more sophisticated or whatever than other liquors, but seriously, ethyl alcohol is a poison. If it's about the grapes that wine are made from, well, there's always grape juice or just... grapes.

I know. There are studies about health benefits of wine. There's also some health benefits of meat. There are probably a few health benefits of eating cardboard (lots of fiber!). But health benefits doesn't mean there are a lot of pitfalls, and plus anything with alcohol's got the potential for addiction in it  :P

I've never drank and don't want to (addiction runs in the family), but now I'm in college and there are so many kids who start drinking, and only binge drinking. Any glamor it once seemed to have was lost the moment my roommate was vomiting in the bathroom  :o

Good on you secondbase; maybe I should have some wine free days, or weeks too.

Can't say I'd be hitting the gym but I can definately see where my alchohol has been going. What does one drink when not drinking wine? Is there something wine-like to sip to be social or that's comforting without the calories? Wishfull thinking I know...

I've really gotten into fizzy water recently; either soda, mineral or whatever as long as it's fizzy (sometimes I put some vodka in it, but i usually enjoy it either way  ;) )

I was going to suggest a wine spritzer (soda water with a little bit of white wine).  It sounds so foo-foo, but it's not bad, and it's a good compromise when you're trying to cut back, but want to be social.

Vodka is good in soda water too--one of my favorite drinks--but you get buzzed a bit faster that way!
