New eating guidelines: meat DOES cause cancer.

Just glanced at the board so I don't know if someone caught this already but from Science Daily :

The major new conclusion in the report is that red and processed meat convincingly cause colorectal cancer. This is based on results from several studies showing that, on average, people who ate the most red or processed meat had about a 30% increased risk compared with those who ate the least. The report therefore recommends that the average intake of red and processed meat in the population should be no more than 300g each week.

and
It may be better to concentrate efforts on increasing the consumption of plant foods such as cereals and beans, which supply energy and protein and can therefore partially replace meat, he concludes

;)

And the vegans let out a collective "duh..."  ;)

Thanks for sharing, this is awesome!

Funny how it takes the rest of the world so very long to catch on to what we've known for years.  ;)

Very interesting, thanks for the post!
Things like this give me hope that perhaps we are progressing very gradually to a society in which meat is no longer a staple...

Sad part is this study will not change the fact that the great majority of the population will continue to fail to believe that meat causes colon cancer... the rest of the world still isn't catching on and won't any time soon.

and we were right all along...

whoah. they even went to say "cause." you never see that; just 'there is a correlation...'

They're catching on Cephi.    :)    Not as fast as we wish, but it's happening.   Awareness and consciousness are definitely spreading.

Thanks for the update Yoga!

no problem. :D
I'm just glad I have something to finally give my mother.

I"m personally curious though as to whether they looked at if there was a difference between organic meat ingestion versus the hormone-loaded  anitibiotic-infested meat ingestion and the resulting percentages of colon cancer.  Probably not, but I bet they would be different if only slightly.

Now we just sit back and wait for the explosive retaliation from the American Farm industry.  :o

I wondered that exact same thing since I know some people use that rationalization in eating organic meat.

Didn't T. Colin Campbell say that the problem was with animal protein itself, in which case organic or inorganic wouldn't make much difference.  Also the China Study took place in rural China so it was unlikely to be the case that the meat eaten was highly interfered with à la USA.  Or am I wrong?  I don't know why the China Study isn't better known anyway - I hadn't heard of it until I started hanging about veggie sites and I have always kept myself pretty clued up on nutrition.

The Science Daily quote cites "red and processed meats" as a cause of colorectal cancer so some people will probably just switch to the whiter meats.  >:( It also says that plant foods can "partially replace meat."  >:(  >:( Baby steps, I guess, baby steps.  :P

Exactly what I was thinking.  Omnivores who do take this article to heart will probably just opt for more chicken and fish. :(

Yeah, which boggles my mind because based on alllllllll the stuff I've read, most recently "What to Eat" by Marion Nestle, chicken and especially fish are pretty much straight up TOXIC WASTE. That is not an exaggeration. In a perfect, unpolluted world, fish MIGHT be a healthy addition to human diets (but only for health reasons, obviously, there's still the killing issue), but as it is now, fish is concentrated mercury, PCBs, heavy metals, pesticides, disease, antibiotics and all other toxic chemicals we continually dump into our water supply. The way I see it, these issues far outweigh any nutritional benefit you might get from chicken and fish.

I read the title to the thread and was thinking the same thing! a huge and resounding "DUH!" When will meat eaters learn??????

Thanks for the post!

Apparently meat eaters don't learn  >:(.....

http://food.yahoo.com/blog/beautyeats/19858/red-meat-that-makes-you-skinny

"Lamb chops or pork chops, bison burgers or veal breast, round roast or Porterhouse steak? Sure, you know meat’s high in cholesterol and saturated fat and that it's less healthy than fish and poultry, but what if you really, really need to tear into some red meat now and then?

Use this guide to find the slimmest, trimmest cuts and kinds. Now enjoy--not just the flavors, the health benefits: Most meat is rich in top-quality protein, iron, zinc, B12, and other nutrients that aren’t easy to get elsewhere."

I saw this today too, foofie and thought to myself "seriously?  didn't they just release news that red meat causes cancer?"  Call me a cynic, but I say special interest meat lobbyists, no doubt?
