You are here

I would like some excercise advice.

Alright, so my main things I do are run and bike, generally, but I am currently trying to rest my knees. After I went 100% raw they got really awful for about a week and now are getting a ton better (than pre-raw!) so I am super excited. Plus, I now believe people when they say they detox.. cause I think my knees were doing that. Anyway, to the point.

I'd love to swim, but I HATE CHLORINE sooo much. And I don't know of any salt water pools around here. I love yoga classes, but I can't afford them at all (and all of the free videos I have found have not been much of a work-out). Right now my exercising seems to be ab work-outs and maybe some planks. What the hell can I do to actually work up a sweat that won't put pressure on my knees? I don't think I'll have to keep up with it for too long, but at least a week more of non-running would be good.

:)>>> thank you.

What about isometrics?  Spark People is free to join and has videos to browse.

What is your goal by sweating?

Hespy, this is my life.  Though I know my knees wont ever get better.  Upper body weights is good. You can use dumbells or even just start with holding a can of garbanzo beans or laundry soap jugs full or recycled and full of water.  Push ups, pull ups, and I like to throw in my PT moves.

Straight leg standing and lift left leg to the side 10 times. Keep it straight and lift high as you can but keeping good balance and form.  Next do the front, then back, then across the other leg.  Swap legs and repeat.  Its quad exercises but doesnt stress my knees any.

I also have a pilates machine but you could do the following exercises without one.  Laying on your back with legs bent at the hips straight up, lower them to a few inches above the ground then raise.  Do that 10 times.  Next with legs open in a V shape bring heels together a few inches above the ground.  Now those two are basic starters to build to the next two.  With legs straight up move down in a circular patter towards the V shape at the middle and down to the few inches above the floor at the end then raise up to the straight position.  Repeat 10 times.  Thats what I call around and up.  Next is down and around.  So with legs straight up lower them to a few inches above the floor then move them apart into the V at the middle and into the straight position at the top.  Those were my knee PT to strengthen core and thighs for my knee issues.

Let me know if this doesnt make sense! heh

My fam has a history of knee problems, so I'm always conscious of protecting my knees too! How about biking, pilates, and the eliptical (sp?) machine? Of course, you'd need access to a gym or machine for the last one.
I swim in a hot-springs water pool--have you made sure there are no chlorine-free pools around?

Yeah, there is a sulfer springs one, but it's far enough away that getting there would be the work-out. Plus it costs a lot.

I really wish there was a salt water pool.

I do bike (to work and such..), but that was bugging my knees for a while when they were at there worst. So I'm trying to keep that to a minimum for a couple of weeks, as well.

Is there any pilates videos (preferably free, I really don't have excess money, atm) you would recommend from the web?

I've recently discovered Dr. Oz and somehow got signed up for their "Real Age" section and while perusing an email from them it mentioned a fitness video library and I checked out one that looked like a pretty good workout and that was only one.  I"d look around on the Dr. Oz site and click around and see what they've got to offer.  Dr. Oz appears to be a wizard who really and truly cares about people and wants to help us all live healthier lives and he's got alot to offer along with others who work with him or others that he recommends and I've been all ears and eyes since finding Dr.Oz.  We've even begun recording his episodes and taking his suggestions.  (some of them)

Peace, love and understanding and sending you the best of vibes I can,

Do you have Netflix? There's a great Pilates video on there. I'll get you the name of it if you think you'll check it out.

No netflix :(

I pay $5 a month for netflix.  One of the best deals out there.  Honestly most exercise DVDs (especially Pilates, since people are kind of over it) are $10 or less.  It might be a worthwhile investment for your health.

I agree with KMK--also, you can download a lot of exercise vids if you are a member. I think that Pilates one is downloadable.

You're worth it! :)

All of my health investments are going towards organic produce right now.
I've just been doing yoga and other such non-cardio activities.

It shouldn't be long term or anything, which is why I am hesitant at investing in something I'd barely ever use.. :/

Netflix is one of the things that is on my list to invest in when I have some amount of disposable income... But mostly for entertainment purposes, so it's at the bottom of the list.

Organic produce? Great investment, for sure!!

Have you thought of abusing their free 2-wk trial??? By then, you could have watched it for long enough to memorize it!

Maybe check your local library?  I dont have any titles to recommend but perhaps checking out a few you can mix an match things that dont hurt.  Thats basically what I do, mix and match.

Some of the shred moves were good too.  The Plank pose, then pulling one elbow up and back, then putting it back on the floor, then lifting one heel up, then putting it back, then doing the other elbow, then other heel.  That didnt feel stressful to my knees.  Oh the walking pushups were good too.  Both the kind where you moved from side to side and the ones where you did one starting at a standing position then bending at the waist down and walking on your hands out into a pushup.

Sorry my ideas are all just random exercises.  Its about all I do when things like squats, lunges or any impact are impossible.
