I smell so bad right now!

This morning my dog was sprayed in the face by a skunk. It happened directly under my sons window..he has a fan in his window pulling in the air..man my house stinks!

I have bathed the dog in tomato juice,v8 juice, vinegar, shampoo and skunk out stuff...she still stinks and now so do I >:(

Any other home remedies?  Sure fire skunk out remedies?

I have an appointment to go over test results..in a small office :o it is not going to be pleasant.(appt unrelated to skunk spray)

The smell is so nauseating.  This is not the first time we have gone through this.  The last time with a different dog it took months for the smell to fully go away from the dog.

I don't remember the proportions, but Hydrogen Peroxide + Baking Soda + Dish Soap is supposed to work fairly well. I think it's a quart of peroxide, a cup of baking soda and a few tbsp of dish soap. You could probably find it online though. There's also a product you can buy called Skunk Off that helps dull the smell quite a bit, but no matter what she's gonna stink for a while every time she gets wet again.

If I recall correctly the more concentrated the tomato is the better.  So juice and V8 would be weak tomato substances.  Where as sauce or paste might work better.

Also maybe try vinegar and baking soda.  Good luck!

Word of caution...If you're using hydrogen peroxide, please know that any hair it comes in contact with will turn orange. On the dog & also on you.  :o

In the 5 yrs I worked in veterinary medicine I gave out that recipe (well, the exact one, I had it written down in my office) tons of times, and never once did anyone's dog turn orange.

Really? Years ago we had a cocker spaniel & she turned orange  :>
I don't remember what the recipe was or the proportions. The dog started to change colour slowly & it didn't click right away why she was orange. It helped take care of her stink & we loved her new colour....it eventually grew outl

It depends on your original colour...peroxide used to be the poor girl's blonde treatment. A "peroxide blonde" meant cheap, tacky and home-done. And was used as a social/moral aspersion in fiction on the girl sporting it.

I once bought cheapo dye to make my hair blonde. As I have red hair in my genes, it turned strawberry pink! Of course I had done this behind my parents' back, so they made me live with it till it grew out! This was in the early 70's, so pink hair was soooo not in fashion! When we saw Grease, all my schoolfriends screamed with laughter at Frenchy's pink "do"!

thanks guys...I am beginning to think there is absolutely no remedy for skunk stink other than time...

I am sort of afraid to try the peroxide remedy because of the hair thing...it is instantly what I thought of...I don't want a bleach blonde boxer!Oddly, my vet never heard of using peroxide and didn't know if it would bleach her fur but said he couldn't guarantee it wouldn't.  I've tried skunk out and natures miracle skunk odor remover...They didn't work any better than any thing else.

Cali..we also tried the tomato paste..looked like there was a slaughter in my tub and on me...she shook while saturated! >:(  she still stinks horribly.

this is what a vet told me to do when I was freaking out about my fiance's parents two dogs getting sprayed. Jake is already orange, but little Julia, she's all black, and she was fine. It worked beautifully, no smell left at all, and no orange Julia.  1 quart H2O2, 1/4 c. baking soda, 1 teaspoon dish soap. Might need to double it for more puppies of course.

Ah yes, those proportions sound more right. I got one of them correct! Haha. Thanks!

I was going to suggest "spot testing" the treatment on a less obvious area of dog if the OP was really concerned about color change, like the inside of a leg or some belly fur or a bit of the tail. Personally, I'd rather my pet have a dye job than stink of skunk, but I realize I may have different priorities than some people :D

Stainless steel removes the smell of garlic. 8-)  Not that I'm implying that you should rub your body or your dog's body against your sink or stainless steel refrigerator, but it sure would look funny.

I don't know about skunk removal.  I'd go with Pink's and RC's suggestion.

Our Spaniel was blond to begin with, so maybe that's why she turned orange. I'm with rabidchild on rather having a colourful dog than a skunky dog.

treehugginghippiefreak, you've got a boxer? Please put some pictures in your gallery of your boxer. I am very partial to them. I have many pictures of my baby Stu in my gallery....well he's not a baby anymore. 1 year old & 110 pounds. We're thinking he's either part Great Dane or part moose  :D
How did your appointment go?
