Does anyone have health links or advise for following a vegetarian diet with the health condition hypoglycemia? My doctor can refer me to a nutricianist or I can attempt this on my own. Health is important but I do not have medical insurance and I cannot afford yet another bill. Thank you!
One thing is to keep your levels constant so they don't spike either way. This is best achieved by making sure you eat little and often. Never go more than 2-3 hrs without eating some fruit, or a handful of nuts or seeds, something like that. They are good portable foods in case you get caught in class or in transit or something like that. And be careful with processed foods, which can have hidden sugars etc. which are not your best friend.
It was difficult to find articles on hypoglycemia without finding 5,000 things about type 1 diabetes. but i found this on the internets:
http://vegetarian.about.com/b/2007/03/27/from-the-forum-help-needed-for-hypoglycemic-vegetarian.htm
some fellow vegetarian hypoglyemic people with advice.
and this:

(though I disagree about fruits being low satiety! the article has specific recommendations for vegetarians, as well as certain foods and supplements)

The first topic on the "nutrition hotline" is vegetarian diets and hypoglycemia.
Some other hits were about how veganism/vegetarianism is good for hypoglycemia. ??? I guess it depends what you eat.
All the women in my family have a *little bit* of a problem with hypoglycemia - nothing too severe. I find whole grains help.
i have a friend wanting to try veg. for a while....she's gained weight with hypoglycemia because of all the frequent meals, and is looking for a healthier option. Thanks for the post!
FB- What were your search terms that led you to sites for type 1 diabetes? All I can ever find is stuff for type 2.
I'm hypoglycemic and vegan, and my saving grace is nuts. I usually carry a small bag around with me in my purse, and try to eat every 3 hours, or more often if my sugar drops. I'd stay away from granola bars with honey and other sugars in them, because those will make you spike and feel worse afterwords =/
