Flue shots aren't vegan!

Turns out that the flu vaccines are grown in egg embyos.  I didn't know that!  The things we come accross when surfing the net.

Yep, if you are allergic to eggs you should avoid it.

I think MMR vaccines are also cultured in eggs.

Looks like they're looking for an egg-free alternative, though:

yep, it is. in the UK they inform you of this pre-vaccination- in the patient information leaflet, and the nurse double checks by asking you if you're allergic to eggs, before she stabs you skillfully in the arm.

some shots have other lovely things like cells from aborted embryos, extract of rat brain and monkey kidney cells in them too. where vaccines have been produced from an animal or person infected with the disease, they initially extract and utilise the virus and the cells to develop and duplicate the vaccine. but its not generally the case that a whole chunk of dead cow or whatever is in each vaccine, most the cells have been cultured from cells procured long ago. there is the whole issue of supporting pharmacutical companies with shady ethics, animal testing, and the egg use too, though.

personally, while i dislike the animal use, and would be inclined to contact vaccine manufacturers and urge them to develop other methods, i'd also not like to be prematurely dead, or risk contracting/developing something awful like paralytic poliomylitis, contributing to the development of a pandemic, or being responsible for infecting an unborn child or pre-vaccinated baby- who risks brain damage, blindness or deafness from an illness like measles- all for lack of my own personal vaccination.

skipping the flu virus is one thing (its not very likely to kill a healthy young adult, at risk groups are vaccinated, and they don't offer everyone else the vaccine as a matter of course in the uk) but a lot of vaccines (like tenanus and meningitis, for example) especially those where safety of the masses is directly proportional to mass vaccination, are very important, in my books.

I got the flu three years ago and have never been so sick in my life.  I actually wanted to die.  I lay on the couch and couldn't move.  Being single at the time, I had no one to get me fluids.  Isabela, my dear sweet dog (sadly passed June 1st, 2006) did not  get to go out once in three days.  Thankfully she peed on newspaper.  I found it amazing that I actually fed my critters although I didn't eat.  I had never believed in the flu shot.  The next year I got one.  Last year, I wanted to get one but was sick and couldn't have it so I passed that year.

My sister didn't tell me until a year later after I had my horrible flu, but her friend's friend died of the same strain of flu I had.  She was in her 30's!  I have no idea if she had any medical issues but it totally upset me.

In Ontario, Canada, the flu shot is offered free to all of us.  I will no longer turn my nose up to it.

My sister's friend is a nurse.  She never got the flu shot or gave it to her kids until her friend died.

I am not vegan (am ovo-lacto) but even if I was, I would not turn down the flu shot.  I was so deathly ill.  I share my home with ten furred and feathered and if I am not around, there is no one that will take them and love them.

I was very ill for at least 7 days. Over Christmas no less.  Not a happy time.

I don't think I've ever gottten a flu shot. I feel like that is for people with compromised immune systems. Yes, I have gotten the flu, but not more frequently than anyone else I know.  In fact, you can still get the flu if you get the shot. ( my mom does every year along with broncitis & last year had pneumonia) The shot only prevents you from getting certain common strains. In the last few years, I've really been taking care of myself, eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, and I can't remember the last time I got sick.....I know it was strep throat, I want to say like 4 years ago, I havent had the flu since before then.

I have had 'flu once and thought I was dying.

Another injection from an animal source is the blood thinning injection enoxaparin. It comes from pigs. I have given thousands of these to my patients but never knew until a few years ago. It also raised issues for my muslim patients

basically no medication of any kind is likely to be vegan.
and you should avoid new vaccines because the long-term side effects haven't been studied thoroughly.

Hmmm...I think I would still have to take the flu shot or anyother type of medication (if and only if it is something i NEED, as in I could possibly die withut it, not like Bean-O just to make gas go away.) because as sad as it is that it is not vegan I would take it and it would only make me want to be veg even more to honor all of those animals that died for humans. It's like...a memorial of war I guess, vegetarian/veganism is my tribute to these animals who saved my life. So I would still take these kinds of things.

I have never, ever gotten a flu shot, nor have I ever been on any anti-boitics (OK, well, I was three and had a nasty, nasty ear infection, but even then my mom was hesitant). My mother never believed in giving unnecessary shots (thank Gawd!). Both my brother and I have never gotten any flu shots, and we're both fine. I'm a believer that shots only weaken your immune system because it doesn't give you a chance to build up your immunity to certain things. My mom's boss's kids are the sickest she's ever seen, and they're CONSTANTLY going to the doctor to get shots! Let their body build an immune system first, I say! I've never gotten strep throat, or the whooping cough, or whatever else kids gets. The last time I was sick was back in January, but even then it wasn't as bad as some others I knew. I was only off work for 2 days. I mean, getting sick happens, but I believe that because I have a strong immune system I wasn't as affected as some people. Anyways, my point is, kids getting sick is OK (as long as it's not super extreme). Their immune system will become stronger and more resistant to certain diseases, rather than letting another outside force fight it for them.
