First blood sample after going veggie

Just got back from the doctor. I had my first blood test since becoming a vegetarian more than five months ago. My stats are great, while last year I had a really low iron count. Now it's perfect. My doctor said that my stats were exemplary and asked what I changed. He didn't really seem surprised when I told him, and he said keep at it. Now we personally have the medical evidence that being veggie is healthy and my family will have to stop bugging me.  ;D Just wanted to share! --Sahnie

Awesome! Good for you!

When my family went vegan, people were terrified for our (then unborn) baby. "She'll be anemic!" they cried. Wehn she got her 1+ year blood work, she had a higher hemoglobyn count than her (meat eating, endorsing) great grandmother.

She also attempted to say "hemoglobyn", which was awsome. (Heeblblbl-go-bin.)

Keep it up, and eat those dark leafy greens!

Yay for healthy veggie eaters!
When I had surgery a while back the nurse said "wow, you have the best blood pressure of the day!"

Thank you vegan diet!

I just got out of the hospital from surgery, and my doctors/nurses were AMAZED at how fast I recovered.  I springed back from anastesia in an hour and was walking around within 3.  Haha, as soon as i came to I ripped all the electrodes and oxygen crap off of me and declared: "i don't need this I am fine, take it off"

GO us veggies!  we're strong!

Sadly even a high-iron veggie diet doesn't help my anaemia - looks like it's iron supplements and getting on with it for me  ;D

I lost a lot of blood in mid-May with my miscarriage and subsequent surgery. I still felt like I'd be hit by a car the next week and went back to see the doctor, they ran blood and my iron was still low, I was concerned (I had been trying so hard with the iron! Some of you may remember my posts) but they told me not to worry "even if you are a red-blooded, meat-eating, American, you're iron won't be back to normal range for 4 months" ...
Huh? Last I checked, vegans were still allowed citizenship and we are red-blooded.  ???

I took a new blood test July 2nd and things were already normal. :) 4 Months? Try 1 and a half!
GO Chickpeas!
Silly doctors...

I'm not sure what kind of iron supplements you are planning on taking but for the record the Ferrous Sulfate that MD's will try and give you actually has a lower absorption than other forms of iron (which is why they give you 325mg of it!!).  I've been using Floradix Herbal Iron - not because I'm anemic but rather pregnant.  It tastes great and is made from things I can trust- like plants.  Hmmm, are you B12 deficient??  Maybe try a sublingual B12 (5mg) if you haven't already.  Not sure why you wouldn't be absorbing the iron from veggies...

To aid iron absorption eat iron rich foods with Vitamin C rich foods
but avoid calcium. (Just in the same meal)

I am on Ferrous Sulphate - actually 600mg of it, ha ha. B12 might be a good idea, although I try and keep taking a good multi-vitamin. To be honest, anaemia is something that's always plagued me and I rather suspect it's a childhood full of surgery and suchlike. I try and keep the symptoms under control but my doctor tells me some people just don't absorb it so readily. Thanks for your advice, I will look around :)
