Diva Club

Over on yogaferret's "for us ladies" thread many of us started talking about Diva cups (divacup.com) and other reusable menstrual products (keepers, etc). Turns out a few of us already use them and many more (10 at last count!) are in the process of making the switch-- and telling big tampon to go stuff themselves!

I started a poll to try to get a better count of those in the "Diva Club."  Using alternative products can be lonely at times because we are trained to view our periods as dirty little secrets--it is hard to know what someone uses unless you ask or they bring it up!

I thought it would be good to open a new thread more focused on reusable products. If you have questions, concerns, exciting things to share related to all things menstrual, this is your thread.  ;)

no worries!
I took a double-take on that one, too.

So I'm way late on this one, but you've all convinced me - I'm now officially in the Diva Club . . . . now I just have to wait until my period starts :( (and I've NEVER said that before) - lol!

Yay Jewel!  I'm thinking the same thing, actually.  I'm about to get my first "moon" since buying the diva cup....so I'm hoping it will go well!

(BTW - Jewel, what a cute kitty you have!)

The entire time I was thinking of baypuppy's comment about "digging around in your vagina" because you DO have to really get in there.

i love that people think about me when digging around in their vaginas. *insert all the crudeness i would say if i wanted to not be tactful* excellent. mine is actually being a bit of a pain this month. keeps leaking and it isn't filling up! what gives....

Well, not about the leaking.  That's no fun.

One more item of note.... I did feel crampy this period, I don't normally cramp at all, I dunno if that's from new period-ness or from the diva ??? I would assume the former. But I did hear some people saying tampons helped their cramps so i dunno...

i feel more "crampy" with my diva. the first day is always a little crampy but now for the first couple i get "mini cramps" every time i do the diva thing (i am not sure what to call it). i always figured it was from the jossling or something!

i used to never have cramps and then they started up when i got older  >:(

I had my first period using the Diva Cup! Fabulous! I forgot I was on my period at times! I can't believe I've gone this long with out one! (I feel like an infomercial  ;D).

I actually had less cramps this time around. But I did switch to a different birth control pill, so maybe that's why....

I forgot I was on my period at times!

that is really the best part. not having that funky wet feeling or smell... yumm...  :P

edit: i forgot to add. about periods getting lighter. i've read it but never was sure. since getting my diva (jan) i've become regular (like clockwork!!) and this month (besides having issues getting it in yesterday) was the first month in a LONG TIME i didn't have the "bleed like there is no tomorrow!!! 2-3 oz day two". i woke up expecting to have leaked some from overnight but nope! dry as can be. i went to empty it and it was full but not overflowing. i haven't changed it out tonight but i still am not overflowing. this is fantastic!

for others who have been using a cup for a while, did you notice things getting lighter? how long did it take?

So I've been following this thread for a while but not chiming in. I had been contemplating making the switch to something reusable, and all you wonderful ladies inspired me to finally go for it. I was kind of terrified at first, but I got a size 1. I'm a touch over thirty, and no kids, but that just seemed like the right size for me. I haven't had any problem with insertion, or functionality. Mine definitely DOES NOT spin! It does work splendidly, though. If I can figure out how to make the removal less painful I'll be all set. I do the breaking the seal, twisting and pinching bit, but the inevitable popping all the way open once out kind of kills. Anyone else? I'm totally excited not to purchase tampons anymore. On the cramping issue, I got mine earlier and harder than normal. They kind of put me out of commission for about a half an hour, though I don't know if that was just coincidence. Since I started running a lot (and aged, perhaps?), I've found that my periods have become much shorter and more intense. My girlfriend gets hers for seven to eight days at a time but with none of the debilitating crampiness. Advil saves me, month after month.

I want to tell a friend about the Diva Cup...but how do you approach that subject?  Any ideas?

If you're good friends, I should think it would be easy enough to just say, "Let me tell you about this cool thing I have discovered recently." Or you could wait until she complains about cramps. If she's just a fellow staff member or casual school friend, you could follow the same general idea actually. I don't know about you but even my casual women friends end up talking about such things so it would be a natural time to bring it up. Another time it could come up is if you two are talking about online info or blogs or just computer "stuff." Of course, if you wait until she complains or talks about blogs or whatever, you will have to wait until that time comes to tell her. I'd probably be more inclined to just insert it into a conversation lull--"I am so pumped! I have discovered the greatest thing since sliced bread (or whatever)." ;)

i talked to one of my friends about it... i can't remember how it came up though but she is working on switching over. but i do think the diva is the best thing since sliced bread so i would just bring it up. i talked about it in a lecture in class one day when they had a reading on menstrual activism.

my friends and i talk about our periods all the time. that is a good time to bring it up.

you could also send her an email with a link to the page saying how fab it is.... !!  :D

or get them for people who you think are open to the idea as a holiday present. cooolness! i wish my friends were like that but i find my friends who are "cool" with things are already cuppin'

I did bring it up, sort of "have you ever heard of the diva cup?"  Heh, she didn't seem too interested but liked the idea of it not messing with the natural juices.  At least the seed has been planted!

So.  The first time I tried being a Diva it was already a few days in.  The cup felt uncomfortable and I gave up on it.  Last night I got to try it again from Time 0.  On Day 1 my abdominal muscles spasm, which cause my stomach muscles to spasm, which results in hours of dry heaves.  That only happens sometimes, but I can tell right away.  Last night I could tell it was going to be one of those months.  However, once I used the Diva cup, the pre-spasms stopped and I was even able to go back to sleep.  No painful wishes that I could just pass out and I can't even feel the cup this time.  This is totally awesome!
