Diva Club

Over on yogaferret's "for us ladies" thread many of us started talking about Diva cups (divacup.com) and other reusable menstrual products (keepers, etc). Turns out a few of us already use them and many more (10 at last count!) are in the process of making the switch-- and telling big tampon to go stuff themselves!

I started a poll to try to get a better count of those in the "Diva Club."  Using alternative products can be lonely at times because we are trained to view our periods as dirty little secrets--it is hard to know what someone uses unless you ask or they bring it up!

I thought it would be good to open a new thread more focused on reusable products. If you have questions, concerns, exciting things to share related to all things menstrual, this is your thread.  ;)

I am having an extremely difficult time getting my diva cup out.  It is waaay up there, must have slipped up throughout the day.  Tips anyone?
Luckily I didn't cut the stem.  I can just barely reach the tip of it.  It says not to panic, trying to follow that advice!  :-\

Did you try the different positions the pamphlet suggests?
Squatting, etc.  You can also help push it out with your vaginal muscles.
It also says that gravity will help.

yep, tried squatting and pushing.  Pushing gets it a little farther down but not enough for me to pinch the base to release suction. How do I get gravity to help?  I put it in this morning and ended up having to work late today therefore getting home late.  It's been in almost 12 hrs already

Don't panic?  I usually start with panic and work my way down.  What I would do if I thought no one would find out is to use my eyebrow tweezers (with the scissor-type handle for good finger grip) to try and catch the stem and move it down until I could reach the base with my fingers.  I'm sure any other suggestion would be better, but that's what I'd do in my panic.

Same here Humboldt, I panic and think rational later :)  I got it, wow was I freaked out for a while there though.  I don't want to give up on Club Diva, what did I do wrong? ???

Glad to hear it.  This is definitely a baypuppy/hopfrog question.  Something went amiss  my first (and only time to date), too.

It's been awhile since your last post, deuceo.  Any luck?

If you really can't get it out, I would first call the customer service to see if they can walk you through a retrieval mission & if that doesn't help, go to the doctor asap.  You can still feel the tip, right?

Can you send a significant other in for a try?  Another person might be able to reach it better. hmm...

oh dear!  :o diva gone missing

maybe your vagina is just tired from work... or it loves the diva cup soo much that it doesn't want to let go!

mine doesn't ride up really-- sometimes i have to kinda "push" it so it sits up a little more (i like it to clear that bone that right there).

squatting should work.... when i first started i would deal with it in the shower because it is easier to do without pants on  ;) squat down chick'n style (with the knees out). you can also try the "tampon" position-- standing with a leg up on the edge of the shower. i find that helps get it sometimes too. push like you would if you were having a baby. granted, i don't know what this is like, being childfree myself, but it might be similar  feeling to pooping.

if you can get the stem, you should be little bit. you'll feel the suction so don't yank it! use your other hand to grasp the base tightly and twist and tip as you pull it out.

the final option, giving the failing of the other options, etc would be the vaginal fishing method. stick your fingers up there and just grab that bad boy. try using two hands-- one to grab at the cup and with the other run a finger up the side until you hit the top-- this will break the seal if you're lucky.

i cryed the first couple of times trying to get it in right/get it out without damaging my uterus. they do say not to panic, but maybe we all do when we have junk in us that we want out. if you can't get it out, try again later. the nice thing is it isn't a tampon and isn't gonna give you TSS or anything. leave it for an hour and try again later. i'll admit that i've left mine in at the end for longer than they say you should (uhh.....1-2 days  :-\) and nothing bad happened. the worse thing that can happen if you leave it in too long is that it might fill up and then you will leak. so if you can't get it out at night and you're worried, wear some backup to bed and try in the morning.

i was thinking about something like this when i first got mine-- some sort of inserter/remover. i would suggest some small silicone tip tongs. i wouldn't use anything metal that might damage the cup.

also, i want to note that if you are "fishing" for it, i find that making some "hand tongs" helps. i don't think we normally think about putting thumbs in vaginas but they are very useful. let me make a pic here....

okay, the first is the "hand tong" position. notice the thumb is one side and the pointer/middle is the other. two fingers = more cup grabin' power. the second i guess shows it in action. instead of a picture of me pulling it out of a model vagina (indeed, i don't own a model one) i used a TP roll  ;) :D ;D

I must be subconsciously addicted to this site too......last night I had a dream about the Diva Cup......I went to buy one (at a bookstore?) and they were HUGE- like as big as basketballs and looked like babydoll heads that were all smooshed up! I bought one anyway, but luckily the dream ended there. I think I am going to buy one for real soon.

I'm a little late here, but I'll tell you what I do when I remove the Diva Cup.  This may be a little gross, but I pretend I'm having a bowel movement--one that requires just a little strain (funny, since I've been vegan those almost never happen).  Somehow that works all the right muscles to move it to where I can reach it.  I grab the Diva Cup base (not the stem, as mine no longer has a stem) with my thumb and index finger, squeeze, twist, and pull at a sideways angle.  When I first started using the Diva Cup, it always seemed too slippery and I'd have a hard time getting a good grip.  I've learned not to be afraid--reach up there and grab that sucker!  No need to be timid at all.  Hope your next time is a little more sucessful!

Oh, and humboldt, I'm glad that subsequent Diva Cup tries were more sucessful for you!  I really would hate for any of you who bought a Diva Cup on my suggestion to not be perfectly pleased.

I did get it out last night, oh my goodness what I position I was in though!  I'll spare you all the visual imagery.  I was not being timid, but it was up so far I was having trouble reaching it, I could reach the stem but was having trouble grabbing the base to release the suction.  I did do the "pretend I'm having a bowel movement" too.

Did I go wrong putting my diva cup in?  I still have the stem on it, after last night I'm afraid to cut it off!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, vegwebbers for the helpful advice!!

deuceo-- are you inserting it like a tampon (high up) or do you put it in low and it takes a trip north? i can't imagine mine traveling that far up unless i really inserted it high up.  :-\ ???

I'm not sure, Deuce.  If it held in all your menstrual blood and you couldn't feel it, I'm tempted to say that it probably was in there properly, but I can't be sure of course.  All I can suggest is trying again.  The first time I removed my Diva Cup, I was on the bed on all 4s (after considerable stress and tears elsewhere, I just couldn't get a grip)---but I think my problem was timidness which you say is not your problem.  I don't know what to tell you except that it got (much) easier with time for me.  Opera Chic had an excellent suggestion of calling customer service--I've heard they are great at helping you solve these types of problems.  Let us know if it goes any easier the second time--sometimes familiarity heps with these sorts of issues.
