Diva Club

Over on yogaferret's "for us ladies" thread many of us started talking about Diva cups (divacup.com) and other reusable menstrual products (keepers, etc). Turns out a few of us already use them and many more (10 at last count!) are in the process of making the switch-- and telling big tampon to go stuff themselves!

I started a poll to try to get a better count of those in the "Diva Club."  Using alternative products can be lonely at times because we are trained to view our periods as dirty little secrets--it is hard to know what someone uses unless you ask or they bring it up!

I thought it would be good to open a new thread more focused on reusable products. If you have questions, concerns, exciting things to share related to all things menstrual, this is your thread.  ;)

Ooo, like a secret sign. When you see women with the Diva pin on, you can pretty much assume they are members of the VegWeb Diva Club--Team Diva, as baypuppy calls it. ;D

LOL Is my vagina suppose to whistle when I insert the Diva Cup? I swear it whistled  ;D I laughed so hard I had to take it out & try again once I calmed down.

Jessesmum, when I read your question I couldn't help but picture me putting mine in when I get it and it walking aorund with it squeaking like a pet chew toy everytime I moved!   :D   Could really jack with some innocent bystanders that way, I suppose!   ;)

Baypuppy, you are so hilarious!!!  Your superhero name would be Vagina Woman!  Freeing all women of the fear of talking about their vaginas!  ;D    Oh wait, you've already done that!  You rock!   :)

aww, thanks everyone! i'm happy we are all talking about vaginas here and that the cup is working for people (so far-- i know many have yet to start bleeding!)

baypuppy, I just went to your profile, because I wanted to check out your new pic (I like it, btw, and are those cinnamon rolls? yum!).  I saw your sparkling cider picture while I was there.  When did you become abd?  Congratulations!

ohh, i just pimped my profile a little! those are cinnamon rolls-- the recipe will be up in the next few days along with pictures. i've been ABD since december (my department only requires you to have your comps done and all your credit hours) but i defended my proposal about a month ago (most other programs make you defend before you are abd). i guess i have to write my dissertation now, right? too bad i spend more time on here than doing that (wait-- i'm on vacation this week by order of my doctor and diss chair!)

Well, I know it's not a dissertation, but I was able to complete my thesis this semester while being hopelessly addicted to vegweb.  It CAN be done!  :)

congrats! there is hope for many of us afterall..... i wonder about some of us who are ALWAYS on here.... don't we have jobs...or lives... or cooking to do?  ??? :D

i keep thinking about doing a study on vegans.... i was reading contexts (a soc magazine/journal thing) and they reported a study about vegans and found that those who were into "punk rock" where able to stick with it the best. and i thought, interesting. the author linked it to social support and "sticking with the group" kinds of pressures to maintain a vegan lifestyle. interesting!

I am a little slow in replying to this, hehe.  I love my Keeper.  I have had it over 5 years now and it is the best product I have ever purchased.

TMI alert!
Heavy periods are standard for me, I can fill my 1oz keeper in an hour during my heavy 24 hours.  Luckily my OB/GYN recommended 2000mg of Vitamin C every 12 hours.  That cuts it back to 1oz every 2 hours.  While still a lot allows me to lead a normal life instead of spending an entire day in the bathroom.

I completely advocate trying either the Diva cup or the Keeper.  They are wonderful and will help you become comfortable with your body as well as more in tune with it.  (Try digging around inserting and removing em without doing that, I dare ya!)

I love mine so much, that I am buying one for my daughter this summer.  Hopefully she will like it as much as I do!

I am pretty sure I JOINED vegweb as a distraction from my thesis!

You've convinced me, ladies, I am ordering one!  Yay!

I cut part of the stem off my diva cup.  They say not to cut all of it off.  For those of you who've cut that stem, did you leave some or chop it all off?  The stem didn't seem to be the key to removal, in any case...

;D ;D ;D  I'm doing incredibly boring work right now - preparing enforcement actions for paperwork violations - so I'm on here as a distraction from mindnumbing boredom.  Of course, I give myself daily performance goals so I'm at work late to make up what I could have done if I just stayed off of VegWeb.

I cut the whole thing off.  If you can get it out without using the stem, you don't need it. Just make sure you don't cut a hole in the base of the cup!

The pin comes in the box, so I'm sure you'll get it no matter where you order from.  I got mine from www.luckyvitamin.com

Hi apstaats! I ordered my Diva cup from luckyvitamin, too, and was wondering how long it took for yours to arrive? It's been less than a week since I ordered, but I'm starting to get impatient!  ;D

BTW, I ordered one for myself and one for my sister! So add one more convert to the list  :) :)

I think it took about a week.  It should be there any day!

I got my Diva cup at Whole Foods last night!  Good timing since I'm on my period right now anyway.  It got it in on the first try no problem!  Getting out....that is going to take some practice.  ::)  So glad I was introduced to this product!  Worry about changing your tampon every 3-4 hours is a pain and pads bother my skin.  This thing it great!!!!!  Thanks Baypuppy!

deuceo-- glad you like it!! remember, when you take it out to pinch and twist as you pull.

I wish I had known about the Diva Cup years ago. It seems to know exactly where it should be in my body & is so comfortable that I forget that I am using it. I'm the same as deuceo as I can't stand using pads, they really irritate my skin. I wore it all night without a pad (something I would never do with a tampon) & no problems in the morning.
How do you all deal with emptying & rinsing it when you're away from home? So far at work, it has  worked out really well because I have a small washroom that I can use with a sink within arms reach. What do you do in a public washroom? I probably don't need to wash it each time, right?
Thank you, Thank you for letting us know about this product.  :)

HAVE A HAPPY PERIOD :D

no, you only need to empty it 2 times a day unless you "fill it up."

in public bathrooms, you can take it out, empty it, and wipe it down with some TP. if you were really fancy, you could bring in a bottle of water i guess? **pictures someone on the potty trying to wash the cup over the potty one is sitting on**

i've only had to do this a couple times--at first when it wasn't in quite right (leaking) and on a heavy day when i filled it up and it started leaking. it was a mess. i much prefer doing it at home where i can wash that sucker out!
