DASH Diet Good!

Just spotted this article on yahoo--it's all about the DASH diet--which sounds lacto-vegetarian or close to it.

http://health.yahoo.com/news/ap/diet_heart_benefits.html

Here's a quote:

"The plan, called the DASH diet, favors fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant-based protein over meat.

Women with those eating habits were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 18 percent less likely to have a stroke than women with more typical American diets."

I'm chalking this one up to another positive for our community :)

I read that article too.  I agree that it sounds like a vegetarian diet but I think that they feel that a lot of people tune out as soon as they read/hear the word "vegetarian" so they are calling it DASH instead.  Reminds me of the movie "Amazing Grace" and how William Wilberforce and his allies finally got a law in place in Britain that would abolish slavery, they cheated and passed one that went after the slave transport ships and by putting them out of business, put slavery out of business.  Animal rights was also one of Wilberforce's issues.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454776/

When I saw the movie, it struck me how the animal rights/vegetarian movements are struggling just like they were at that time.  What we need is all the cheats we can come up with.  The survival of the earth's environment and all the people and animals depends on things changing for the better.  I'm getting down off my soap box now.   :-D

DASH has been around for quite some time.. stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension, so i hope they have a lower chance of heart related issues.
it definitely does push high fruits and veggies, but is not made to be veg*n at all. it just pushes non-fat diary products and ultra leans cuts of meat.

prevention magazine recently had an article about DASH too.

i think it was awesome that on CNN larry king there was a health show w/ sanjay gupta, bob (from oprah), and deepak chopra. they took questions from some stars and someone asked about their thoughts on dairy and didnt they think that there is more issues behind dairy consumption. i was so glad to see that bob and sanjay both commented that there is something odd that we consume milk from other sources and there are plenty of other options. they both agreed that there is more to be looked into about dairy, and you didnt really need to consume it at all!!  ;)b

I haven't watched Sesame Street since my niece was little.  She's 14  (my how time has flown)!  But a few years ago, Cookie Monster was made to expand his diet to include fruits and vegetables so not to be a bad influence on the kiddos.  I had to google it to make sure:

I am old enough to remember watching the pilot episode of Sesame Street. They showed it in the evening to get parents to watch (though the series itself was in its current timeslot). Children's Television Workshop was daring and new in those days. Blacks, whites, Hispanics, men and women, all together? Wow what a concept!! People in normal clothes instead of dressed-up? (Even Mister Rogers came onset in a suit!) It was all very creative, for those days.
