Couch to 5K

I know a few of us are currently doing this, and some have done it before.
I started it a few weeks ago just to get back into regularly doing SOMETHING. I have done some running off and on for years, but I want to be indefinitely consistent with it. The first few weeks were really easy, but I liked the gradual beginning, and seeing some progression. It stresses to not do more, so I stuck with that.  I'm currently on week 4, day 3. There is a bit of a jump from W3 to W4, but I'm still good. The last running "program" I did increased a mile a week, basically..and that got old fast. I'm hoping this way, I can stick with it! I'm still looking forward to runs, and I have seen some more tone in my legs. I also like running based on a set time, because I tend to get too caught up in how fast (SLOW) I'm going, and trying to go faster makes me not run as long.

I just finished day 3 of week 5... the difference between days 2 and 3 is ridiculous. Day 2 is run 8 min, walk 5 min, run 8 min. No problem. Then running 20 min straight?! Sooo much harder!! I'm so wiped out now! But I'm kind of amazed that I did it. I'm practically back to my high school days. crazy.

I did week 3 day 1 yesterday. I'm pretty much relieved to have fewer (but longer) running intervals... though I'm sure that will change in the coming weeks.

I'm still going with this, but slowly. I just find it hard to fit in three days running, and three days at the gym, especially as it is getting dark earlier now, and the park that I run in is not visible from the street... I just don't feel comfortable being there on my own after dark.
buuut I'm doing week three day one tonight straight after work, yah!

yay, everyone! I'm working on getting back to the 3 times a week thing. I've yet to do a solid 30 minutes of running this time around, but am still working in the 20s.

I would love to start this...I love to run, and just doing cardio at the gym is getting REALLY boring.

But man, I just looked up the podcast and the automated voice is ANNOYING!

You don't have to use the podcast! You can just time it yourself. I think I'll do a 28 min. run, and then start with my 30 min. ones. After that, who knows! I don't know WHAT I'm going to do in the summer...

urgh, I had  h o r r i f i c  traffic on Wednesday so did not make it home before dark and consequently, did not get my run in : (

I'm going to take rest days from the gym on Saturday and Sunday this week though, so I'll run tomorrow morning and hopefully again on Sunday.

30 minute jog today!

Humidity is 62%, but it feels like 92.

urgh, I hate exercising in high humidity.  Unfortunately that's like four months of the year here, so... yeah.

30 minutes is good though! I just did first day of week three so I have a long way to go yet, but it felt really good. I enjoy that there are slightly longer running periods now because it feels a little like I'm actually starting to get somewhere.

I am on week 6 and today really wore me out. I had a hard time just walking to my class afterward. I might repeat week 6 so that I get better before going on to week 7. is that a good idea?

Did you do W6D3, or one before that? I think it might be a good idea to add a week of 3 20 minute jogs (after you do the 1 W6 25 minute jog), before going into W7 of 25 min. jogs. I kind of did that in that I just did a couple weeks of 20-28 min. jogs.

I haven't done w6d3 yet. I'll try a week of 20 min jogs. that's a good idea. the one I did last week was killer. I'm not looking forward to my 25 min one.

Yeah, I think you should probably slow it down a bit if you start really not looking forward to it. It (most probably) won't last that way. See how you do with the 20 min ones, and then maybe even do a week of 23, or something.

I did W3D2 today (not sure if I'll actually get to D3...) and in my fivefingers shoes! (yeah, i got them) i worked my way up with them, and i didn't die while running! most excellent.
this week has been a breeze so far. can't wait for the difficult 20-30 minute jogs in a few weeks ><

Yes!! Isn't it so much easier to run in them vs. regular shoes? I felt a ton of difference at first. Why wouldn't you get to D3?

the gym is close to my school, and no school on the weekends. I was thinking of being dedicated and walkin all the way over there tomorrow anyway, but... not sure.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. My legs didn't get as tired as fast. Maybe it's because I'm using different muscles, or just figuring out how to run in the shoes was distracting. I wasn't sure whether to go with a normal gait (heel to toe) or just on the balls of the feet. =/

It's mostly because you don't have all that extra (shoe) weight on your foot! You're basically having to clunk around a couple pounds with every step. Also, it's a much more natural movement.  Whenever I used to run (with shoes), I always turned my right foot inward, so I would get blisters/rough spots/pain on the inside of my foot (because of my 'bad' leg). I don't do that anymore, and my back doesn't hurt after running, and my legs don't get very tired. I've always run more on my toes (more so with shoes), but I think I do a mid-foot to toe movement. It will probably just take time to get back into your body's natural movement. Yay!

I just started over with week 6 today, wearing my new Jinga shoes.

They are awesome! I felt so light and free and I definitely ran more on the ball of my foot. I ran with shorter strides and I smiled the whole time. It felt like dancing. Reading Born to Run has definitely influenced me. I want to be like the Tarahumara.

I just googled Five Finger Shoes because I'd never heard of them before. They look so cool! And the website it right - the human foot IS an anatomical marvel.

You haven't heard me talk about them before?!! They are great. One of my favorite things.
