Contacts (the ones for your eyes)

Does anyone have an opinion/suggestions about contacts?

I never wear my glasses because I can kinda see without them. (I have perfect vision in my left eye but, my right one is horrible.) I just went, in October, to the eye doctor and he said I wont appreciate glasses or contacts but, I will need them by next year because my good eye will get worse. He gave me the prescription thing and said I could get either contacts or glasses, just make sure not to waste my moms money. I can't see in math class now (don't ask me why she put me in the back of the room) and was thinking now would be a great time to get a contact (supposing I would only need one).

Wait are contacts veg*n/cruelty-free?

I have both. My eyes seem to get tired of wearing contacts every day, and there are some mornings that I am lazy and just don't want to put them in. It's nice to have glasses as a back up. Plus it will take you a little while to get used to the contacts. For this reason I would recommend you get the glasses.  If you decide to try contacts in a year or two when your insurance will pay for another eye exam, get contacts then and you will already have glasses as a back up.

I've always thought that all contacts are non-vegan. Because of this, I have chosen to buy glasses instead. Am I wrong? I'd definitely consider contacts if there are cruelty-free ones out there.

BP, where would I find out if my contacts are vegan? I'm sure my eye doctor would look at me like this  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? and then this  :o :o :o :o if I asked him if there were any animal products used in the making of my contacts.  My eyes are so bad that I need a special kind of lens, so if my brand isn't vegan that means I have a decision to make.

We're not all as lucky as BP, who looks awesome in glasses....  8)

I've been wondering what other people think about this.  I wore contacts for years and loved them, but one day it occurred to me that surely they test them in animals' eyes.  I did a search and found this on the PETA web site: http://www.askcarla.com/answers.asp?QuestionandanswerID=491  So, yes, there is cruelty-free solution, but not contacts, as far as they know.

I've been wearing glasses ever since.  They're not so bad; I just get tired of having something on my head all the time.  I do appreciate being able to rub my eyes with total abandon though (you have to be careful doing that with contacts).

:-\  I'm going to be going to optometry school soon, my sisters there now, and they play with cow eyes sometimes.  I will probably do it too, sadly, and just hope that my future work will make up for it.  :-\

My dad is on the board of the American Optometric Association and is in a perpetual state of travel for meetings and lectures.  I should probably mention this to him, I dunno how I'd go about it though ::).  His focus is on practice management anyways, business stuff, not much to do with contact lenses...  So I'm not sure what he could really do anything.

I work in an optometry office, and we dont make any money from selling contacts.  Wal mart sells them for the same price than private practices can buy them for, so glasses are yummy and we must try to convince everyone to buy our overpriced glasses  <3.

;)  Girls look soooo much better in glasses anyways.  I mean oh, my, god; so cute.

Damn. I hadn't thought about that one yet. My bad.

I have both. My eyes seem to get tired of wearing contacts every day, and there are some mornings that I am lazy and just don't want to put them in. It's nice to have glasses as a back up. I have both too. I started with glasses in high school, and pretty much hated them. It's mostly the cleaning of them that drives me nuts, but I also found that when I'm wearing them, my nervous habit is to fiddle with them.  :o

I wore the sort of contacts that last for several years for quite a while, then switched to 1-2 month ones... until I got a bad an eye infection and was told not to wear them; to let my eyes heal for a few weeks. So I bought glasses... why is it that the nice ones are SO expensive? *sigh*...

Now I'm back on the contacts, but the brand is different and they dry out too quick to wear them all day, every day. (Though this also seems to depend on the climate.) My problem is that my prescription has changed over the last few years, so if I were to decide to go back to just glasses, I'd have to pay a couple hundred bucks to get new lenses for them.  >:(  And since I don't like glasses anyway...... what's a vegan to do??

I wear Focus Night and Day too.  I am really bad at remembering to change them, and the change is problematic because I try to leave them out for at least 24 hours in between.  The issue is, I cannot see AT ALL without my contacts.  I cannot leave them out overnight because I am a light sleeper and freak out if I cannot see at all when I wake up.  Personally, my contacts are the only way I can live because glasses do not work for me.  If you choose one or the other for the majority of the time, be aware that switching requires adjustment.  For example, since I only wear my glasses occasionally, it takes me at least eight hours to adjust to the point where I can drive.  I love the Focus Night and Day brand of contacts and would highly recommend!

In all fairness, violin, you'll probably need both contacts and glasses.  You can (and probably should) wear glasses the majority of the time, but contacts will be good for gym class, any sports or activities that you do, and taking a break from your glasses.

I'm really upset now because I never even THOUGHT to think whether or not contacts were cruelty-free.  They're really not?  None of them?  Sh_t.

I have been wearing glasses since September, but wore contacts for years before that.

A word of warning:  Be CAREFUL with your contacts everyone!  My boyfriend accidentally put the wrong solution in my contact case one night (the cleaning stuff, not the storing stuff), and when I went to put them back in the next morning it burned a circle around my iris.  It hurt so bad that I couldn't open my eye to take the contact out for a few minutes, and my eyes were bloodshot red for days afterwards.

After that incident, I noticed that my eyes were really red and the small veins were much more prominant.  I went to the eye doctor, and apparently colored contacts are much less permiable, so for years my eyes had not been getting the oxygen they needed, and the veins, in an effort to get oxygen, started moving to my iris.  He said much longer and they would have covered my iris, causing possible blindness.

Don't know if the two incidents were connected, but I'm wearing glasses now.  (one pink pair, and one black pair)

So be ye warned!

I'm not brave enough to do it, but I have at least 4 co-workers that have had it done and love it. No one had problems with the surgery but I think one of them has had problems since then but I don't know what. The problems may have had nothing to do with the surgery at all.

Has anyone had laser vision correction?  My doc suggested this the last time I was there, as I am finally old enough that my vision won't change much from year to year.  But then again, it's your EYES.  Sort of scary, right?

I would do ANYTHING to be able to have laser correction. I'm almost blind without my lenses and I kept being told I would be a perfect candidate for the surgery, but when I FINALLY went in for a consultation I found out that my corneas are borderline too thin. So I'm screwed until they come up with some alternative for people with thin corneas....    :'( :'( :'(

Both of my parents got it done.  My father has a bit of trouble with night vision now (that ring around the lights effect), but they are both tickled pink that they got it, and neither regrets it.
I'm seriously considering it now too.

I'm kind of like you, violin. My eyes aren't bad, but sometimes I need my glasses to see in class or to drive at night to read road signs. I tried contacts and hated them--I think since I didn't really need them, I found them to be too big of a pain. Plus, I live in the desert and there's always crap flying around in the air and getting in my eyes, so contacts were not a good solution for me. I have glasses that I only wear when I need to read something from a distance.

I say, if you don't need to wear corrective lenses all waking hours of the day, I'd stick with glasses because I think they are easier and less irritating. My BF, on the other hand, has terrible vision and the dry climate doesn't bother his eyes at all and he wears contacts almost everyday.

I don't know if that was helpful or just rambling...hopefully helpful, though  :)

A friend of mine told me that you should go to Canada to get laser surgery done because it is less costly and the technology is a bit more developed there.  Who knows if this is true or not.  His mom got hers done there and it was very successful.  My uncle also got it done in the U.S. and his went well too.

I really want the surgery!  I'm blinder than a naked mole rat without my contacts  :-\ :P

Everybody's eyes  are different.  If you consider contact, you should ask your doctor to let you sample different brands and different materials contact.  Acuvu Oasis and B&L Pure vision are silicon base with lower water content.  Coopervision's proclear line have the highest water content.  If your eyes like me need more oxygen, you will like this.  I spend whole month  to try 4 different brands and materials ( 5 different pairs)  and find what suits me. My near sight is pretty serious, without contact I can't see clear, but with glasses sometime it get blurry or dirty  not able to see clear. My contact gives me crisp view. I do have a glasses in lower power for reading.  I consider this is a medical issue, if you try enough of contacts you will find the one that you like.

I have both, though I need to get my glasses updated as they are over 5 years old and my eyes have gone downhill quite a bit in those years.

I would add my recommendation for glasses first then try contacts in a year if you need it.

I guess my vegan line in the sand is not so far as to make contacts on the 'do not purchase' list.  I have to live and my insurance covers contacts, so I get them.  Said insurance hardly gives any money into getting glasses.  :(
