BHT in my deodorant... just me ranting a bit (what's new, right?)
About 6 months ago my husband and I both stopped wearing antiperspirants on a regular basis.
We don't smell anymore, unless we eat copious amounts of Indian food and then it's not even BO smell, just a strong spice smell. We do have some around in case we feel insecure on a particular day or have an event something.
So, I got a Dove brand deodorant free when I bought new razor blades this week. I thought, "Ok cool.. I used to use Dove and it was free.... so I'll keep it around."
BUT I looked at the ingredients and it has BHT (just to be clear, BHT is vegan... just icky chemical) a long time ago I have given up many a packaged food just because it had BHT in it or the packaging... like my beloved Quaker oatmeal squares... and the whole time it was in my damned deodorant. I was so glad I had not been using it regularly but I still felt like someone got something over on me.
Once again "EVERY label every time" hits me in the head hard.... I don't know why I start to feel settled and don't read things each time. ::)
...I won't even bring up the borrowed lotion I almost used because the label said "natural" that had Urea in it...
I feel your pain! Even if you almost always check every label, it's easy to feel frustrated and duped when something slips through the cracks...
Because I'm not familiar, what are BHT & Urea? I am very into organic & all-natural products (Gee, you think?? Just like pretty much everyone else on here... Haha. ::) ), but I can't quite recall what these can do to your health. Now I'm nervous they're in some of the things I buy! Thank you in advance!

So... It is used in animal feed, toilet bowl cleaners AND hair coloring products?!?! What in the F?? It seems to me that there should be absolutely zero common ingredients between any of those. That is sick sick sick. (Though, unfortunately, not all that surprising.)
It doesn't seem to be made from pee, though it is a naturally occurring element (in a very small amount) in our urine...
BHT is found in jet fuel, pharmaceutical drugs & embalming fluid... Mmmm. Yum. Again I say: WTF?? Now I'll definitely be checking my products more closely for these things specifically. Jeez. It's been banned for use in Japan, Romania, Sweden & Australia, and in infant formula in the U.S. Yet Wheat Thins put it in their product "to preserve freshness." Well, gee--I suppose that if it will preserve a dead body, it will probably preserve a cracker. Wow. This is frustrating.

;D yep, it probably does preserve crackers very well.
I finally stopped coloring my hair about a month ago. Something inside me just clicked & I thought, why do I keep putting chemicals on my head? I have no idea what is in them. And I just didn't feel comfortable doing it anymore. it's a big money saver too.

Not usually, unless I know I'm gonna be running around all day and then I just use a natural one, Avalon organic's lemon... maybe this is icky gross or something but my husband and I just share since the lemon scent works for both of us... I have thrown on the old dove a few times if I felt like it I think my husband has used his old deo-antipers if he had to be in a suit all day or something.
We use organic shampoos and stuff too but we also have head & shoulders and pantene around from guests leaving them and what not. I use them every once in awhile if I feel like a change.
I guess I just don't like to regularly use chemicals that I don't have to, even if they are considered "safe"... let alone, BHT which is NOT safe, and as Jessacita wrote, banned in some countries!
I stopped dying my hair too and that was my first step and then eventually I looking at everything and was thinking, "I have no idea what's in this shampoo either!"

Oh and someone on vegweb (I think it was K2) mentioned that her and a friend's yeast infections stopped after not using antiperspirants and I'm gonna have to agree one that one big time. I have NO idea how that would work though.
I think I'll try the baking soda sometime baypuppy, how do you get it on? Make-up brush?
Urea is the urine from pregnant mares. When I was young, we drove by a pee farm. Pregnant mares with bags attached to them to catch their urine. I told my teacher in school I had seen a pee farm and she said I was a liar. Well, she had to apologize to me because I was telling the truth.
Ugh, I know what you mean about labels. If only I worried just about the vegan stuff. But, I am a health fanatic. I will not use weird chemicals, or preservatives on my body. My skin absorbs everything. As a biology major, having taken all those chem classes ... it is FREAKY what types of stuff are in our cosmetics, shampoos, lotions, etc.
I buy all natural and all organic. And, obviously, all vegan. I have to buy it all online as I live in a small town with zero stores beyond Albertsons or Walmart. But, for me, it's worth it. If there's one thing that I won't skimp on, it's my health. I'll skip the clothes shopping, I'll avoid cable, I'll avoid cell phones, I'll ride my bike to save on gas, etc., in order to save money. But, I will not skimp on the products that go on my body or the food that goes into my body. After all, my life is tied to my health.
The mares at those farms are kept in narrow tie stalls (tied up at the front and not allowed to move around, lay down, or anything), not given much water (so their urine is more concentrated), and kept pregnant and their colts are sold to slaughter. The mares usually last about 8 or 9 years being pregnant and lactating constantly, then are shipped off to slaughter,too, like all their babies. Just like the dairy industry. There are some groups that try to rescue and adopt out the colts, but there are just so many of these babies it's not been possible to save that many of them. :'( You've probably already heard they get the Premarin drug from these mares urine, too. You can google it all.

My hubby & I share Tom's brand deoderant. Is that brand safe? I don't think sharing is gross at all. When you are intimate with someone you kindof sweat all over eachother anyway! & I would like to be a hippie. I just wrote that in another post actually.....As for the YI, mine stopped when I quit dairy- I think it has to do with consuming second hand antibiotics. My allergies stopped then too!

I stopped using antiperspirants as well and i took the baking soda route and it is amazing.
i just sprinkle some onto my hands and pat it on under my arms... is that weird? my roomies see me doing it all the time (yes, i do think i freak them out a little but maybe not too much?)
