What moves you?

I was thinking about this topic when I was driving home tonight. What moves you? Sure..a lot of us post what grinds our gears or makes us smile, frown, proud, and feel slanty. But what moves you? What, at the end of the day, touches your core and refreshes you?

Is there an object? A quote? An action? A song? A memory? What moves you to have that moment of inner peace..where things are aligned? Obviously, these things can change based on where you are that day or time in your life. I'll start.

Two things for today:

1) I listened to Barber's "Adagio for Strings" again tonight. Each time I listen to it, it just reaches me and will sometimes move me to tears. It just helps me sigh and realize it's okay.

2) I've posted my anger with my dad here in the forums. Tonight he called me and we talked. He's moved to another state and to another company because he wanted to change his direction and outlook on life. It's hard to fully describe. But, for once, my dad said "yes" to life and chose to go for it.

As I thought about this topic and the news of my dad challenging himself to get out of his rut, it moved me. My dad sounded so happy on the phone. He's scared it won't work but he's ready for the challenges. At this moment in time, I'm actually proud of my dad.

‎I've always heard the phrase "a picture can say 1000 words" but I've never fully believed it. I have, however, always been a firm believer in the phrase "the eyes are the window to the soul".

Tonight, those two phrases came together. Tonight, I found the wordiest, most poetic picture of a breathtakingly gorgeous woman with a wonderfully-beautiful soul. I'm still stunned by this picture that moved me. No. The picture hit me.

I want to date a breathtakingly gorgeous woman with a wonderfully-beautiful soul. *sigh*

Storm, that video is awesome. I never realised that bats ate nectar!
Also...wow. A spider as big as a hummngbird. Yes, I realise that hummers are tiny but wow. To see them together and the same size. Goodness.

Lily is a Great Dane that has been blind since a bizarre medical condition required that she have both eyes removed.

For the last 5 years, Maddison, another Great Dane, has been her sight.

The two are, of course, inseparable.

Getting so lost in a painting that you don't realize you've been working without a break for over 6 hours.
That is one of my favorite feelings ever, when you just lose yourself to the paint and the canvas and you forget about the world completely.
Also included in a moving feeling that can (to a certain extent) be calculated:
Standing in front of any Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Joan Mitchell, or Helen Frankenthaler painting. Any of them, the bigger the better. I'd highly suggest this activity, as you're guaranteed a reaction.
Most of the Mark Rothkos I've seen are tear jerkers, because they're just so wonderful.

I can't even draw and this used to happen to me when I tried, IA. Time just went.  Shame about my results though. I aaaalways wanted to be a great artist or musician. Took me a looong time to realise that enthusiasm is not talent, but that I can enjoy the enthusiasm anyway.

*Being back in Portland.

*Helping people I care for and love. I've helped a lot of people lately. This is what life is all about - compassion, love, and helping those you care for. Maybe that's my INFJ personality talking? :P

*Moments when I feel aligned.

Can I just say - IdrilAsphodel sent me a pic of her painting and it totally blew me away. I stared at that pic for a while and I was stunned the whole time. Her work grabs you and hits you like no other work I've seen in a long while. She's got a talent. I've always told her that and I think she's starting to kick it into high gear. Well done, IdrilAsphodel. I'm proud of you!!

As a kid, I used to lock myself in my room, put on my headphones, and conduct the invisible orchestra in my room. This song always moved me to tears and it still does to this day. I'm not sad. I'm happy. I'm refreshed. I'm no longer dragged-down by the depression, the anger, the hurt, the pain, the sadness. I've learned to embrace it and learn from it..not swim in it. I love and feel love and want to share love. Listen to this song but get the tissues ready.

I found this DVD at the library and it's still one of my favorite scenes. Culture is awesome, isn't it!

My students move me.
My student who decided to go for her masters even though she has 3 kids under 9 had to write a friendly letter. She wrote one to me, to thank me for helping her get back her self-esteem by finishing her BA and helping her feel that she could do graduate school and get a job even though she's 41 and a mom.
She says I'm a good teacher.

People unhinge me.
