What moves you?

I was thinking about this topic when I was driving home tonight. What moves you? Sure..a lot of us post what grinds our gears or makes us smile, frown, proud, and feel slanty. But what moves you? What, at the end of the day, touches your core and refreshes you?

Is there an object? A quote? An action? A song? A memory? What moves you to have that moment of inner peace..where things are aligned? Obviously, these things can change based on where you are that day or time in your life. I'll start.

Two things for today:

1) I listened to Barber's "Adagio for Strings" again tonight. Each time I listen to it, it just reaches me and will sometimes move me to tears. It just helps me sigh and realize it's okay.

2) I've posted my anger with my dad here in the forums. Tonight he called me and we talked. He's moved to another state and to another company because he wanted to change his direction and outlook on life. It's hard to fully describe. But, for once, my dad said "yes" to life and chose to go for it.

As I thought about this topic and the news of my dad challenging himself to get out of his rut, it moved me. My dad sounded so happy on the phone. He's scared it won't work but he's ready for the challenges. At this moment in time, I'm actually proud of my dad.

The kindness of my hubby moves me. I had a rottenish day yesterday for a couple of reasons. They showed "My Neighbour Totoro" on UK TV and not only did he record it for me, he actually sat with me today and watched it all. An anime. He wanted to share something he knew makes me happy, even though for him it was totally meh.

Ahimsä is a principle that Jains teach and strive to practice not only towards human beings but also towards all nature. The scriptures tell us: “Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture, or kill any living being including plant and vegetables."  The teaching of Ahimsä refers not only to the avoidance of wars and physical acts of violence but also to the avoidance of violence in the hearts and minds of human beings.  Ahimsä also refers to an active concern and compassion for fellow humans and other living beings.  Ancient Jain texts explain that the intention to harm and the absence of compassion is what makes actions violent.

Ahimsä also has a deeper meaning in the context of one’s spiritual advancement. Violence imposed upon others in any form by our body, mind, or speech leads to the acquisition of new karma, which hinders the soul’s spiritual progress. In other words, violence towards others is violence to one’s own soul because it impedes one's spiritual progress.  The path of non-violence leads one to spiritual progress and liberation from karma.

In a positive sense, ahimsa means caring for and sharing with all living beings as well as tending to, protecting and serving them.  It entails universal friendliness (Maitri), universal forgiveness (Kshamä), and universal fearlessness (Abhaya).

I'm moved when I plug in my earphones and walk around downtown Portland. This helps me remind myself that I'm making it happen in a completely new part of the country.

I'm also moved as I read through everyone's earlier posts. :)

A student I haven't seen for 2 years called last night and said, "You wanna go out for a drink?" so I did. We sat in a bar and chatted and after a while she basically asked me for some life-advice. Like I'm some kind of role model? Talk about humbling! She's 35 and unattached, having left her immature, unemployed leech, richman's-son boyfriend a few months back. But in this part of this country, being that age and still single means a LOT of pressure from her peers, who are all married with kids long since. (And probably half of them soon-to-be-divorced, but that's another story). So I told her what I thought makes a good relationship, and also that what matters is how SHE feels about her life, not what others think!

When she left, about 15 min later I got a text saying thank you.
Then this morning I found an email asking me to repeat some points I made last night.
My goodness.  :o
I'm a person.

friends and family that stick by me when i hit rock bottom... who pick me up off the ground in my closet and say they love me and i will get through this... these type of people are few and far between but i am very fortunate to know that no matter how fucked up i am they will be there to help

painting. I've found that if it's a flat, two-dimensional object with expressionist qualities, I find it totally the most moving thing in the world.
Thus why I have a tumblr.

Amy - I like what you had to say about people sticking by you. I was just talking to my friend Angela about this. Loyalty isn't too common nowadays. Fair-weather friends are in-season. I know that you have a lot of support here in the forums and that's awesome!

IdrilAsphodel - I really like your thoughts on painting! Art is just awesome in general and I'm glad you love it so. I'll never understand it on the same level as you but I can certainly hope you two understand each other better..if that makes sense.

Trouble is, fair-weather friends are also seasonal. They're your best buds for a few weeks and then they're gone. Sigh.

Seeing someone actually learning something moves me. When light breaks in their confusion and you get to witness the "Eureka!" moment. "Ohhhh! I get it!"
