Tired....But not sleeping

For a while now I've been tired on and off throughout the day, usually around 1-2 pm, and at night, but can't fall asleep until really early morning only a couple hours before I have to get up and start a new day.  Last night was extremely bad since I went to sleep at almost 2 am and got up at 4 am.  I am tired, but can't sleep.  any suggestions for sleep or reasons this might be happening?
Thank you,

Peace

yes, I go through that once in awhile and it's because those are days I don't exercise. If you don't already have an exercise regime, I'd suggest added some light exercise like yoga and walking, plus some cardio like jogging or whatever floats your boat... good luck!

Are you having bad dreams and it's shaking you up maybe?

A lot of women on the verge of menopause have this problem...but somehow I don't think that's it in your case!  ;D ;D However it is in mine.

What really grinds my beans is that I'm often sleepy when I go to bed and then as I lie there I get progressively awaker...or I sleep from say 12 to 4 and then I'm up for the day, and no, it's not enough sleep. If I could manage on that I wouldn't mind, but I can't.

Try melatonin. It helped me.

I know that this is probably a bad thing, but when I really cannot sleep I take Children's Benadryl.  I do it in moderation and take the six year old dosage (it's strong!) - it really knocks you out!

Anxiety and stress could be why you have trouble sleeping. Make sure the hour before you go to bed is spent doing something that puts your mind at ease, like reading, a bath, prayer, meditation, sipping warm (vegan) milk, decaf tea.

Light exercise during the day, such as a walk outside, also helps, as someone suggested.

Also (I know this but I seldom do it!)--do try to avoid the TV and computer screen for about 2 hrs before bed. The flicker of the screen is not seen by the eye,but is percieved by the brain and it is v. stimulating! That was my prob last night--I had a friend round and he helped me resolve some computer-related problems and it was just too much for the old brainbox. Couldn't turn off the motor!

And remember, CRIB-Cooler Really is Better. It's best to keep your bedroom slightly cooler than the rest of the house. That way you can snuggle down under a coverlet of some kind and relax and sleep. I think we associate covers with childhood "safety" (as Bill Cosby said, covers are magical) and it helps you relax.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. It's true if the room is to hot a person can have trouble sleeping.

I have a really hard time going to sleep without covers on.  Also, avoid caffeine, at least after 3 pm.  I am addicted to coffee.  I will make an entire 12 c pot, and drink it all, with little effect.  But if I consume anything with caffeine after that, I WILL NOT be able to sleep.

This has been me lately, too.  How's your eating?  Are you eating enough?  Not eating enough can make sleeping impossible.

What has helped me some is going to bed really early when I can...like 9:30...and just lying there in the dark.  I think I won't go to sleep but I do, and when I wake up at 4 am at least I've had some sleep.  It would be better to be on a schedual but it works when you're desperate.

When I can't sleep I do a "everything-hot-lavender-nite". That's what I call it anyway... :-\
Take a really hot bath with lavender salts in it. I light up all the lavender candles in my bathroom. Then put lavender lotion. Then finish with very hot Cammomille Tea (sweet drems nightcap) no sugar, just a teeny eeny bit of honey. Then grab my favorite blanket and fall deeply to sleep. not even my baby's cry will wake me when I do this routine. Makes me wanna go to bed now... :)

Oh whoever mentioned Children's Benadril here...Yikes it works too! :o

i had insomnia trouble all through high school and this is what i found works best for me:
when you wake up in the morning, assuming it's at the time you are supposed to wake up, try and stand in direct light for a few minutes.  i guess i read it in a magazine somewhere, but as soon as i get up i will kind of expose my face to light, and that supposedly makes your body more aware of what time it should be shutting down later.  and drinking chamomile tea before bed helps me relax when i'm having anxiety trouble.
if anything, a regular schedule will make the biggest difference

My schedule has been completely out of whack the last couple of weeks. I was working on assignments, and only assignments. I stayed in the house and at the computer all day. I didn't get any exercise. All day and night I was in this strange state of tired alertness. I was never fully awake or fully asleep. After my last assignment was handed in and I got a little exercise I finally slept properly. Are you stressed, under pressure, got a lot on your mind? Try and do some cardio, go for a run, a swim or a bike ride. It might release any tension that is being held in your body, and causing you not to be able to relax.

i have definitely had this problem before and most of the suggestions on here work well. what worked for me was not going to bed either hungry OR too full. staying on as regular of a schedule as you can (try to wake up at the same time everyday, even if you can sleep in), don't do other things in your bed (i.e. read or watch tv), don't work out right before bed, and relieve stresses/anxiety.
