The Teeth Related Thread.

People talk about their teeth all over the place. Wisdom, flossing, retainers, gums, whatever. Do it here!

Love this. I have to call the dentist today about my wisdom teeth and make an appointment. It'll be the first time I've seen a dentist in over 10 years.

I feel for you.  I'd rather go to the obgyn than the dentist, how twisted is that? I had to go last month after not having gone in 3 years.  I only went because a filling broke out a year ago and it was finally starting to bother me.  That was the third time it had broken out and I had to get a crown this time.  It was rather traumatic so all I can say is, no matter how much you loathe the dentist.....go.  Otherwise you'll end up like me....3 appointments in 2 weeks and one of them sitting in a chair holding my mouth open for over 2 hours so they could contour the tooth.  Also, three shots in the gum and $1,000.00+ (thank Goddess for insurance).

I have no insurance.
I am paying.

I haven't been in like 4 years.

UGH. poops.
He'll probably just take all of my teeth.

Oh man, teeth. I have crappy oral health in general. I had a root canal when I was 19, and had to go back to the dentist repeatedly for adjustment on the crown because of malocclusion (but then, of course, the malocclusion caused inflammation in the gums, which made the malocclusion worse arrrgh). Eventually it got better.

Last spring I had a toothache, and figured out how to assign myself to a dentist (hehe). But then I had to wait a month (HMO!), which is ridiculous. It's because, at the beginning of the month, a dentist's office gets a list of covered patients assigned to their practice, and you have to be on that list to be seen. Would it be so hard to have a computerized, automatic system? Maybe there's something significant about this process I don't know, but anyway, by the time I got to actually go, I needed a root canal, a crown, and two fillings. 9 months later, the crown tooth is still bothering me. I keep going back to the dentist to get it adjusted, and asked last time about a referral to an endodonist just to get the root taken out so it doesn't have to feel painful. He didn't want to, since the radiographs don't show an abscess or anything. I get that they don't want to take away sensation in a tooth when there's a risk of infection or something else for which feeling pain is useful, but I seriously haven't been able to eat on that side of my mouth for 9 months now. And I've been taking NSAIDs that whole time.

Since I've had pain there for so long, I think it's become chronic pulpitis actually due to the fact that I keep getting dental work done on that tooth (ironically, the tooth adjustment that is supposed to make the bite & pain better is irritating the nerve, causing chronic inflammation). So that would either mean that, once the malocclusion is resolved (if it ever is), it could take ~1y for the pain to go away, or *alternatively* I could get a f***ing root canal and be done with it.

I hate dentists. My pediatric dentist was abusive. Abusive in the no longer has a license, can't be near children sense.

Courth, my brothers dentist had that happen to him too. He strapped kids down in chairs.

I SURVIVED.
I am already known as "the vegan" and apparently all day they were talking about what questions they could ask me before I came in. They didn't use floss on me and told me to find some thats vegan, and they gave me polish stuff to look up online and see if its okay. The girl who cleaned my teeth was stoked to tell me that she bought her first vegan candle today.
Haha.

The actual dentist man with his name on the door was creeepyyy. I don't know why, but he was. Also, he didn't read my papers at all, because he said I was 17, flossed, and knew nothing about me being vegan, and when I told him he talked about me eating cheese pizza? But the other people were really awesome.

Still scary, and not fun.
But, at least the people were fun.

wait, he assumed something about your flossing status? does it say something clearly in your file like "patient does not floss." or, "against medical orders, patient is not practicing at-home dental prophylaxis by flossing."

It was from looking at my teeth. I guess it looks like I try to floss? Idk.

STRAPPED THEM INTO CHAIRS?! what the fuck? why are there weird people in this world?

Yeah, my dentist did that, and if you weren't being good, he would hold your mouth and nose closed so you couldn't breathe. Messed up. I haven't been to a dentist since my wisdom tooth extraction in 2008. I'm almost afraid of how bad my theeth would be.

Same at the one my brother went to.
Ugh. I was little so I didn't go, but I remember being in the waiting room with kids screaming (It was a place for kids)

If it makes you feel better, I hadn't been to the dentist in like 4 or 5 years, and I had nothing wrong except for a little tarter build up.

wow. im sorry you had to go through that! people are fucked up.

That is awful!!  I can't believe some of these stories!!

I only have one bad dentist story.  It was from when I was 16 and my Mom and us kids were on Medicaid (or something) and I needed my molars out because they were growing in WAY angled and were pushing my bottom row of teeth together in the front.  Dentists ask you, "pain or pressure?" while their goddamn hands are all in your mouth.  I was saying pain and this fucker kept going at my impacted molars.  (Impacted means they have to go in and break them apart and then yank them out).  I flipped out, knocked his tray over and swung at him.

Needless to say, I tell this story to all my new dentists and they are extra extra nice to me and if I have anything more than a cavity filled they give me Valium. :)
