so my little sister wants to be a vegetarian

so yesterday my little sister (after eating a tuna sandwich for breakfast) decided to be a vegetarian without an ounce of my pressure. I was sooooo stoked! But today, she was doing good until lunch when she decided to start tomorrow after a big chicken dinner tonight. I can't help but think that she's just johning the fad and doesn't really care. I can't see how people can say "i really wanna be a vegetarian... starting tomorrow". if you already know the facts then why not just start then and there? why wait any longer? i dunno, maybe i'm the only one who thinks that way, after all, i became a vegetarian while eating a ham sandwich.... i hope she sticks to it!  :>

I became a vegetarian after a midnight discussion with my boyfriend. We decided to "try it out" for "a couple of weeks."

The next day, I went to lunch at Raising Cane's Chicken, and got a big box meal. Ate the whole thing, knowing full well that it would be the last meat I would voluntarily consume. The boyfriend changed his mind later and has decided to eat veg at home and eat whatever looks good outside our apartment (but now he's cutting out red meat or something, I don't know).

Everyone has their own thing. When I was a teenager I said I was going to be a vegetarian, (MDVegan was such a horrible influence), but my dad said if I did that I would have to find my own food because he wasn't paying for vegetarian shit, and he wasn't going to let my mom cook it. My resolve wasn't strong enough to try to stand up against my parents, so I was vegetarian for like, 5 minutes.

Ah, childhood. I love being an adult.

When my cousin was 8 years old, he had a dream the day after Thanksgiving about the turkey he had eaten....and he still had a "last meal" of Thanksgiving leftovers but felt horrible about it. That was the last meat he ever ate and he is 45 now.

Everyone does it differently. Your sister may be sincere, but especially as a youngster, it just isn't easy. I had several "stints" as a vegetarian in high school. I wanted to be a vegetarian badly because I didn't want to eat animals. My parents, though ignorant about vegetarianism, were even mildly supportive. But it just didn't stick.  Once I moved out of the house and got married, started buying and preparing my own food...that's when it stuck. For some people it just takes time, and the transition can  be years. The fact that she is even thinking about her food in a different light is a positive sign.

;D I'm glad I'm not the only one who did a 'last meal.' I went vegetarian for the first time when I was 14 and both my parents still ate meat, but they supported me completely and my mother made lots of vegetarian meals. However, I only lasted a year, mainly because my school cafeteria had no vegetarian options and I was living off the occasional bag of white cheddar popcorn and dinner. And on top of this I was playing soccer and tennis so I got too skinny (I'm sure this was intentional too, but that's another story).

And now, I went vegetarian 8 years later again, although after the first time meat always did taste pretty funky icky.

So maybe your sister just needs a couple of false starts before she can get to a point where she's going veg for the right reasons.

I am always jealous of folks who started to think about stuff from a young age. I didn't eat all too much meat as a kid. I never really liked it but the whole concept of vegetarianism never entered my head.

At world vegan day I met this guy and told him I was vege as a kid and he couldn't get over it, kept saying how lucky I am and calling me "the mouse in cheese" hehehe it amused me. I think I was pretty lucky, and I'm proud of myself for making my own decision as a kid to be a vegetarian for my own reasons as well as my parents'.

Any step toward consciousness is a step in the right direction.

Well said.
