So bad they're good! (NVR)

OK, we had such a good time with the "favourite films" thread, another one has occurred to me. What is your favourite "bad" film or TV series, and why? You know, the ones that are so bad they are unintentionally hysterical! Because of what: bad acting, terrible sets/script, effects, what?
For me, the winner has to be the 60's series "The Prisoner." You know, "I am not a number--I am a free man!" I saw it when it first came out and figured I was too little to get it. Well I saw it again last year--nope, it just makes not much sense at all, and I never did find out what the mysterious "bicycle" symbol meant! It took itself far too seriously and Patrick McGoohan--well the less said about his solemn acting, the better.
In terms of films, there's the 80's "bad" classic, Clash of the Titans. To me it looked like they walked into the studio canteen and said, "Who wants to make a film about the Greek gods?" and all these famous folks yelled, "Me! Me! Pick me!" Once again, so solemn it was funny, and let's not even discuss writing a mysterious message--with a severed chickens' foot???  ???
So what's your candidate for the "So Bad it's Wonderful" sweepstakes? Give reasons!

Guilty pleasures?

I love the Tudors on Showtime.  Too sexed up, historically inaccurate, the costumes are not historical, I dislike the guy who plays Henry VIII, but yet I watch it.

For movies, I am a great fan of Danny Darko and I think I have seen it about 10 times since last October.  MY idea of a horror film because I am a wuss.

I have a list of off beat films that speak to me and that I love.  Used People...Harold and Maude...The Best Years of Our Lives...and there are others that don't come to mind in my early Friday morning stupor.

Oh and when A Christmas Story is on for 24 hours on Christmas Eve, we watch it several times.  It is one of those I can't get enough of for some dumb reason, but I dislike It's A Wonderful Life.  Go figure.

Nice thread though!  I'll have to think.

I think the winner goes to the classically stupid but hysterical Dumb and Dumber. OMG, so stupid but so funny!

And Beer Fest... Doesn't make much sense at all... and Borat... I could probably go on and on!

I'd have to say Clash of the Titans is my favorite bad movie.  I think I watched it a hundred times as a little girl, and I can still watch it today.  It really never gets old.  I love saying the word "Kraken" in an evil voice with a slight roll of the r.  It's fun.

Even though everything was so cheesy, Andromeda was pretty hot!

I know I'll be adding to this thread as I devote more thought to this throughout the day...

Oops, mustn't forget the classics: "Rocky Horror" and "Evil Dead II".  Maybe "Reanimator" as well.

And for some unrelated reason, I have the song "Melt with You" stuck in my head, and it reminds me, "Valley Girl" is another one I love because it's so bad.

Same here. I can't think of any right now, but I'm sure I'll come up with something by the end of the day.

Offhand, I do admittedly like the movie The 'Burbs. It's so cheesy, but funny. Every time I watch that dumb movie it makes me laugh. I even own it. I love when Tom Hanks spies on his neighbor in the middle of the night and watches him drive to the end of the driveway, pull out a bag of "trash" from the trunk, stuff it in the garbage, beat the crap out of it, then get back in his car and back up the driveway. I have a strange sense of humor, but I'm sure that doesn't come as a surprise.

I also love the 70's comedy Murder by Death. I've never gotten sick of it. Peter Sellers has the most un-pc role as the spoofed version of Charlie Chan. I love all the spoofing of famous literary detectives (Nick/Nora Charles <love The Thin Man!>, Miss Marple, Sam Spade, Henri Poirot). And I love the interaction between the blind butler and the mute/deaf cook. But again, I'm sure I can think of much worse movies than this that I like--they'll come to mind later during the day, I'm sure...

"Evil Dead" is a good one, but I prefer "Army of Darkness."

I have some friends whose mission in life is to see every bad movie ever made.  We watched one not too long ago called "The Marine."  Awful.  Seriously.

I don't consider some of my favorites to be "bad" movies so much as unappreciated.

I am a writer at heart and I don't watch movies like most people do. I pick them apart for pacing, lines that aren't in character, blocking, costuming, etc.  Costuming issues are just annoying because that is what I have my college degree for and I know what I am talking about as a rule.  I just roll my eyes at times.

Now, if a movie has strong characters that are well written, but then the course of the story seeks to shake up their cozy little status quo, I'll see it again and again.

Shop Girl with Steve Martin had nice characters, but I could have lived without the voice overs which were cheezy.

Used People is just wonderful with lovely characters which were well written.  While Shirley McLain could have carried the movie, the other actors and actresses held their own.  It was unappreciated.

I loved Boxing Ernest Hemingway, also with McLain.  Duvall was a TREAT...no I don't have a baykohn sanwhich everyee day, I have TWO two baykohn sanwhiches everyee day!

Blockblusters to me, are usually duds intended to meet a lowest common dominator.  This brings us to a discussion of what movies were supposed to be good, but we hated and why!

All time favorite movie has to be Billy Elliot because I love Julie Walters and a I am such an anglophile.

It's funny that Valley Girl was mentioned because that was the first movie I thought of!!! Also "Cocktail" is one that is so bad but I have to watch when it's on. Actually so many movies from the 80's fit this bill..."Some Kind of Wonderful" "Eddie and the Cruisers" so bad and yet so fun!!!

I admit I still like Valley Girl for nostalgic reasons. That was before Nicholas Cage became a "serious" actor--ha, ha! I liked him when he was in movies like Raising Arizona, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Moonstruck. Even Wild at Heart. Then he got into all those silly action movies, some of which are so bad I cringe to watch them (8mm, Snake Eyes, etc.). And he started to get a little full of himself I think. I like him in weird really quirky roles better. He was GREAT in Adaptation.

LOL - Jeepers Creepers...that was one awful movie!  As soon as I saw this thread, I thought of it...and someone else beat me to it, so I'm not the only one! lol!
I saw Jeepers Creepers in the movie theater with my roommate & we laughed hysterically for the whole movie.  Basically, everyone did.
;D
Ah...how about Starship Troopers?  Remember the enormous (& disgusting) bugs?

I'm not sure I would watch either of those movies again if you paid me, though, so I'm not sure they fit the bill.

I too love Clash of the Titans & A Christmas Story (which I OWN on DVD! LOL!)

I LOVE Valley Girl, and Nicholas Cage also has a lot to do with it.  I feel exactly like you, I adore him in most movies, but movies like Snake Eyes tick me off.  He is better than that!

The absolute best quote from Valley Girl is when he says, "Fuck you!  For sure.  Like, totally."

One of my favorite movies has got to be "Bring it On." I still LMAO every time I see it! Also "Bad News Bears in Breakin' Training." My brothers and I have seen this movie over 100 times!!

Howard the Duck.  And I have to agree with the Andromeda post.  And CSI: Miami takes itself way too seriously, but I still watch it all the time.

We were just talking about CSI:Miami last night--how completely corny Horatio always is.  My husband and I always try to figure out what cheesy line he will say right before the Who song comes on.

Original Star Trek.  The costumes (esp. those of the females) and the set can verge on the ridiculous and sometimes the dialogue isn't the best, but I love it for that :)

I will whisper that once, long ago, I went to one evening session of a Trekkie convention. Before the "out take fest" which was the point of the evening Shatner described the sets of the old studios as "like working in the Starship Holiday Inn." There was a lot of bumping into sliding doors that didn't and knocking down of walls in the course of struggling with the Klingfrees.

I just really liked the whole "Dude!" "Sweet!" dialogue.

And suddenly, I'm reminded of another movie: "Half-Baked"
The one and only reason to see that movie is to see Bob Saget say, "I used to suck d*ck for coke"

Sorry for being so vulgar today, but these really are some of the best movie quotes!
