recipe category suggestions

Over the last few months, people have suggested adding the following recipe categories:

Low Carb
Low Calorie
On a Budget
Wheat Free/Gluten Free
Cooking Methods

Since our software currently allows only one category per recipe, these categories would need sub-categories that would pull recipes from their current locations. "Fat Free/Low Fat", "Quick & Easy", "Crock Pot / Slow Cooker Recipes", "Raw Food" and "Regional Recipes" already draw recipes from such categories as "Cookies", etc. In this example, there is currently no way to see all of the cookies that are listed in the aforementioned categories. If we add a Wheat Free category, for example, then the wheat-free cookie recipes in Desserts/Cookies will not be listed there anymore.

However, we're still considering adding these categories, since they would be nice to have. Do you have suggestions for any further categories? Would you prefer that the recipes not be sub-categorized any further?

Thanks,
Yvette

Recipes for 1 or 2

i did notice that they "pictures" has a key word search. would it be possible to put things into "multiple" categories this way for when people search?

nope.

things like "on a budget", etc... i just think these are highly subjective (what is a budget meal?).

There have been some complaints about some recipes that aren't really main-stream recipes... These would be things that students in dorm rooms might make when they don't have any money. I can see a need for a category like this so that their recipes can have a place where they make sense and aren't criticized. These recipes could fall under "On a Budget" if there aren't enough recipes to justify some sort of student category.

otherwise, i would say the only option you list that would be worth adding separate would be wheat free-gluten free because that is harder to "hunt down", esp for baking (perhaps put a wf/gf category under desserts, breads, etc?).  i've already seen many things under categories that i don't know why they are really there (like "sushi" under avocado). i think more categories would pull away from what is currently going down. i would even think about reintegrating some of the categories back into more "main" topics (ex: take all the "raw" ones and put them under the main, like "raw soups" could be listed under soups, etc)

not a bad idea...

When we have the recipe box script re-written, we want it to include a section where people can categorize their favorite recipes under headings of their choice and share their lists with others. ..Probably something like Listmania that Amazon.com uses. This is a little similar to what you are talking about.. though not quite.

We don't have anything in place for what you are talking about. It would require a programmer, and if we were to hire a programmer for this, it would be better to have keywords added to the recipes. That way, the lists would be generated dynamically and not have to be manually created..

I agree with Baypuppy, I think there is a need for reincorporation. Instead of making a whole new category for low-calorie. Could each main category have that as a sub category? Such as, in Desserts there are Cookies, Cakes, Miscellaneous Desserts, can there also be Low-calorie Desserts, or Regional Desserts? I also think some categories need sub categories. Cookies is huge, can it be broken into chocolate, chocolate chip, oat, bran etc? I also wonder if the different vegetable categories should be for recipes where the vegetable is the main ingredient. It makes since that Fried Spinach is under Spinach, but perhaps Spinach and Mushroom Pie should be under Pies. I think the Budget recipes don't need their own category. It seems to me, that asking people for low cost recipes in Q&A would be the best way for someone to find good, cheap recipes. That being said, Baypuppy's idea of an information page is a good one. Instead of another category, since the software can't cross reference, there could be a page where members post a link to a low cost recipe and write a little blurb about it.
However, if you think that sometime soon you will be able to cross reference, I'd put off all this hard work until then.
