Reasons to make the O_o Face

There are times when you read, see or hear something that just makes you  :o. This is the thread to share them on!

The other day I don't know where I stumbled on a thread discussing the Nancy Drew novels. I remembered how much I loved them and I did a little research...which led me to the original publishers, who also published the Hardy Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. All written by a cadre of ghost writers under cover names. Then I found a link to an audio book of one of the Bobbsey Twins stories, which I loved when I was a kid. I listened to it for old times' sake. The  :o happened when the author described little Flossie-aged-four's collection of dolls, among which was a black Sambo doll given to her by the family's "coloured cook Dinah, and her husband the stableman, Sam." Who had "excellent rooms above the stables." They had given her this black worsted ragdoll (named Jujube) which she kept with her other dolls..."but apart, at the other end of the shelf, and with a nice  piece of white pasteboard in between--because, well, he wasn't really family."

:o  :o
The story goes on to state that Flossie had thought about giving Jujube away but didn't want to hurt Dinah's feelings; "and after all, as Mamma said, there weren't any doll hospitals for black orphan dolls."

No wonder the Bobbsey Twins books went out of fashion. Nancy Drew is still available today...but then there was nothing like that in them.

So, VWers, what made you :o    today?

my family is honestly having a huge meltdown over a fucking bike.

lol no. i bought a new bike while at home this weekend and to get it in the car they had to take off the front wheel and the handle bars. we get home, the bike made a hole in my sister's car, and we can't put the handle bars back on

my sister calls my grandpa to ask how to do it and she's already aggravated from the rest of the day and somehow they get into a screaming match

my grandpa feels terrible because he thought he broke the bike and that we are mad at him.

my mom is pissed because my sister made him feel bad.

my sister thinks everyone thinks she's the devil.

i'm sitting back hearing all of this.

no one wants to say sorry except for me.

=so dumb!

jewel, who used to post here, would take the other person's number.  If she ran into that person later, she'd say she accidentally washed it.

Yesterday my dog got into the bathroom bin and started eating a bar of soap.  :o (Normally I don't throw soap away, but this one had fallen on the floor and had all kinds of lint and hair stuck to it, and since it was more than half gone I decided it wasn't worth the effort to clean it off).  Anyway, he came out to the living room looking shady and he went under the table, and I pulled a chunk of soap plus about 4 used cotton balls out of his mouth.  DH had to wrestle him to get the rest of the soap.  I'm not sure how much of it he actually ate, but...soap?  Why the hell would he want to eat soap?  Weirdo.

Homer Simpson, poster boy for the SAD.

Eeeeew.  I know people who really eat like that.

Suddenly, I'm craving steamed broccoli and cauliflower with Mrs. Dash.  :P

Well, if it's natural soap it wouldn't do much more than give him the runs...kinda "clean him out" so to speak. It's only fats and perfume, if it's natural.

It was natural soap, but still, I can't figure out why he would want to eat it.  It definitely doesn't smell like any of the things he's supposed to be eating.  And it would have to make his mouth feel weird.  He went back to the bin and searched for more last night...luckily we threw it away in a different bin where he can't get to it.  Crazy puppy.

ETA: Actually, I just remembered that he really likes eating flowers.  Enough that I can make him do tricks for flowers.  So maybe the soap reminds him of flowers and that's why he ate it.

There's a series of "Get Fuzzy" comic strips in which Satchel the dog is caught eating all kinds of things...cushions, keys, even tries to chow down on the remote. Rob asks him WT actual F, those things aren't food, and Satchel replies, "A lot of things are edible that aren't actually food."
It's a dog thing.
And of course I immediately thought of all the processed crap that people shove in their faces. Cheese curls for one. And a thing they call "popcorn" here at the junkfood kiosks (there's at least one near every school that sells candy and crap). Their idea of "popcorn" is totally synthetic, made of puffed cornstarch and chemicals, and it looks and tastes like styrofoam packing worms.
