Reasons to make the O_o Face
There are times when you read, see or hear something that just makes you :o. This is the thread to share them on!
The other day I don't know where I stumbled on a thread discussing the Nancy Drew novels. I remembered how much I loved them and I did a little research...which led me to the original publishers, who also published the Hardy Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. All written by a cadre of ghost writers under cover names. Then I found a link to an audio book of one of the Bobbsey Twins stories, which I loved when I was a kid. I listened to it for old times' sake. The :o happened when the author described little Flossie-aged-four's collection of dolls, among which was a black Sambo doll given to her by the family's "coloured cook Dinah, and her husband the stableman, Sam." Who had "excellent rooms above the stables." They had given her this black worsted ragdoll (named Jujube) which she kept with her other dolls..."but apart, at the other end of the shelf, and with a nice piece of white pasteboard in between--because, well, he wasn't really family."

The story goes on to state that Flossie had thought about giving Jujube away but didn't want to hurt Dinah's feelings; "and after all, as Mamma said, there weren't any doll hospitals for black orphan dolls."
No wonder the Bobbsey Twins books went out of fashion. Nancy Drew is still available today...but then there was nothing like that in them.
So, VWers, what made you :o today?
I don't mind them so much blended up into like raw sauces or whatever. But yea, any actual pieces of them = bleuuuurrrrrgggghhhh
I don't like mashed potatoes...or any food really with that texture. Yuck! I ate too much of it years ago when I was in the hospital after surgery for scoliosis. It was the only vegetarian food they had.
YG, I don't like hummus.

I have tried it! It is good. Once again, because it has no actual pieces of sundried tomato...

mirrya you had surgery for scoliosis? so did i when i was 13. i wouldnt eat any of the hospital food because i used to be an even bigger picky food brat than i am now. i was there for 3 weeks and the whole time i think the only thing i ate was like..crackers and granola bars. haha!

SOG...yes, when I was 20, I was only in for a week. I had it done after I was medically denied entrance in the Army. Even though I had requested vegetarian food I kept getting things like beef broth and other nastiness. They finally told my mom to go buy me food because I wasn't eating. They wouldn't let me eat any solid food for most of my time there so it was mainly mashed potatoes, pudding, jello and other soft foods.
I have scoliosis too! But not bad enough for surgery, just enough to confuse all my neck/back muscles and make them all tense all the time.
I always almost had it when they did those tests in school.
Which reminds me.....one of my least favorite parts of school was when they did all those tests, and they did the lice check with the two long q-tip things. I still hatehate people looking around in my hair.

Yes!!! It was like once or twice a year. We had the hearing test (which I also almost failed), and the scoliosis one, and lice one, and others.... so horrible!
I don't remember any tests at all haha
The only school physicals I remember are an eye test and the one scoliosis one which I failed. I was a gymnast for 7 years before that and I fractured it pretty bad.
in middle school our scoliosis test was done by gym teachers. i'm pretty sure they weren't qualified. i think everyone passed.
i remember the lice exam in elementary school one time. the school nurse like ripped through the hair; every one hated it. i didn't realize then that it's pretty easy to detect and not necessary to yank hair, haha.
and the hearing test. i was always afraid of failing that, though they never told me how i did. similar to that is the glaucoma test at the optometrist; you have to keep staring in one location and say if you can see a vague squiggly line somewhere in the periphery. I focus so hard i swear i'm going to think i see a squiggly when i don't. same with the hearing test - there would be a pause and i would be worried i missed something, or when there was a fainter high-pitched sound i wasn't sure if i was having ringing in my ears or what.
I hate hearing tests with a violent purple passion.
"We just want to check the percentage in your right ear..."
I'll tell you, you don't have to put me through 2 hours of this. It's ZERO. ZERO F^&%$NG PERCENT like it has been for the last 25 f^%&*ng years, asshat! The tiny bones in that ear are not going to magically grow back, nor is the 1/4 inch thick lump of scar tissue that used to be my eardrum going to magically start vibrating like a real live eardrum again. Stop wasting my time and my money.

They never caught mine in school since they only looked for curvature over the entire back. Mine was really low near my rear and only affected 5 vertebrae and only I think happened during my last growth spurt during my senior year when I shot up almost 6 inches. When I went for my military entrance physical I got into an arguement with the Military Doc about his insistance that I had to have back pain ( I didn't) due to the 36 degree curve of those 5 vertebrae (caught by x-ray). About 9 months later I had it checked out again and the curve was up to 56 degrees and my spinal cord was also rotating inward. It was about 6 months later that I had the surgery to straighten it out. Two titanium rods, 6 titanium screws and 15 years later it doesn't bother me at all plus after surgery I was a half inch taller. ;)b That last bit pissed my twin off something fierce since I already was several inches taller than her.
I'm pretty sure that we never ever had scoliosis tests at school.
we did hhave the nit nurse and it was way embarrassing getting caught with nits.

I have scoliosis as well, like theos, not bad enough for a surgery, but keeps my muscles all tense and sore, right side under my right below my shoulder blade... mmm yes i need a back rub.
and we had gym teacher scoliosis exams, I passed everyone! haha (and i ALMOST went in for surgury when i was 10 for it.)
Did anyone else see SNL last night and the "I Broke My Arm" video? My reason to o_O is because I can't get the song out of my head. lol! By the way, Emma Stone is pretty amazing. Rumors are saying she's vegan as well.
