Reasons to make the O_o Face
There are times when you read, see or hear something that just makes you :o. This is the thread to share them on!
The other day I don't know where I stumbled on a thread discussing the Nancy Drew novels. I remembered how much I loved them and I did a little research...which led me to the original publishers, who also published the Hardy Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. All written by a cadre of ghost writers under cover names. Then I found a link to an audio book of one of the Bobbsey Twins stories, which I loved when I was a kid. I listened to it for old times' sake. The :o happened when the author described little Flossie-aged-four's collection of dolls, among which was a black Sambo doll given to her by the family's "coloured cook Dinah, and her husband the stableman, Sam." Who had "excellent rooms above the stables." They had given her this black worsted ragdoll (named Jujube) which she kept with her other dolls..."but apart, at the other end of the shelf, and with a nice piece of white pasteboard in between--because, well, he wasn't really family."
:o :o
The story goes on to state that Flossie had thought about giving Jujube away but didn't want to hurt Dinah's feelings; "and after all, as Mamma said, there weren't any doll hospitals for black orphan dolls."
No wonder the Bobbsey Twins books went out of fashion. Nancy Drew is still available today...but then there was nothing like that in them.
So, VWers, what made you :o today?
I ordered a large bag of 600 teabags of Barry's Irish Tea today. The company that is shipping it is called...Ormskirk Pharmacy.
You heard me. A pharmacy.
:o
Had a physiotherapy appt this morning at 8.30. I was a bit early. Not only did they give me a little extra TENS time, they didn't charge me.
That does not happen.
we had a class activity today in public speaking to get to know our audience. questions like what religion are you and what are your political views. I told one kid that i have no political views (which i don't, I really don't care.) and i got labeled and outed to the class as being an anarchist. enough to make me O_o since i am not planning nor do i have anarchist thoughts. i am annoyed that these people are quick to label before they know what they are talking about.

While I wish you cared about politics, I can't make you. That said, you're no anarchist. Based on what you said about the student's reasoning, this student is purely an uneducated person. That is all.

Nice...a "get to know you" exercise that ends in labelling and stereotyping the audience members? Epic fail on the part of the teacher.

+1
seriously..... I was excited about this class... but it is full of conservative close minded stuck up people. it is just getting worse. I am supposed to do a demonstration speech on tuesday, and i don't know what to do it on b/c we are supposed to it on something our audience can relate to. i keep getting singled out by classmates and the teacher... it is bullshit.

can you talk to the prof about it? I mean if it's a class, you deserve to learn as much as possible from it, and if you're being singled out, that's unfair. Can you have a meeting with your professor?
Got called at 3pm EST to play a show at 6pm tonight with my friend's band and my band.
THREE HOURS IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO GET ANYTHING TOGETHER.
I'm dying.
thanks idrilasphodel I had my first speech today, i think i pretty well nailed it and had the class laughing. how did your show go?

good you got the class laughing!
The show went well, I got another gig out of the mix, though I wanted to kill my guitar player (he's so....um, silly...haha).
But beyond that it was alright. :)
Well done both of you!!
I know how you feel IdrilAsphodel, that is one reason I gave up wedding singing, too many last-minute demands (by my father). A LOT of people think that 30 min before is plenty of time to practice something up and have it "ready." But then of course those people never do it.
OK, I'm not sure whether this is a :o or a :-D.
Garnier Cosmetics has come out with a pair of jeans that supposedly makes you lose weight. Not only that, but the cloth is supposedly impregnated with thousands of "microcapsules of caffiene" that supposedly trigger when you walk around!!
Never mind that caffiene is extremely soluble. One wash and it's all gone.
Ah but "You just move around--and it works! No more cellulite!"
Yeah. Rite.
Locally-made cheez curl thingies...glow in the dark, ever so slightly.
:o :o :o :o :o :o

I just signed up for my senior Thesis.
I.e. I'll be graduating college in a year. What.
:o
Go for it, IA!! You can do this!!
My reason to :o : for the past 2 and a half years I've done my bulky shopping every couple of months at this place called Mesa. They opened branches all over the region. About 6 weeks ago they changed the name to Senator, we went in and they were changing things around etc. Went today; they're closed. No sign, no "For Sale or Rent", no nothing. All they need is the tumbleweeds.
What happened there? I Googled local businesses; it's as if neither of them had ever been, which in itself is odd.
Now I have to find a new place I can afford to shop.
o_O
I just got back from University Crookstore, where I bought 2 teaching texts, one on phrasal verbs (finally! They have one! and one for Proficiency mock exams.
Eighty-two euros and some change.
For less than 250 pages combined.
Crap.
Yabbit, I go through that every college term with my kids. DD paid $40 for a 1" thick packet of pages she needed to put into a binder for her one class. It amounted to an unbound book. Then they change editions every 2-3 yrs so the books can not be reused and I heard they are looking at linking the books to on line material that will be required for classes and if you buy the book used, you will need to pay for access codes for the on line stuff.
