I thought a good topic would be to start a thread with cool veg*n quotes.
I know I've heard some great ones.... but I can't think of any right now... hence the need for this thread. :D
this is from the Bible, and the reason i became a vegan.
And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat (food)"
Gen 1:29
"Animals and humans suffer and die alike. Violence causes the same pain, the same spilling of blood, the same stench of death, the same arrogant, cruel, and brutal taking of life."
-Dick Gregory
"It may take a while, but there will probably come a time when we look back and say, ‘Good Lord, do you believe that in the 20th century and early part of the 21st, people were still eating animals?'"
-Mary Tyler Moore
this is a great thread! keep the quotes comin
i'm adding them all to a folder on my computer lol :)
When she was tree-sitting in Luna, Julia Butterfly Hill said about old-growth forests, "Rooted deeply in love and respect, standing in solidarity, we are reclaiming power for the land and the people to which it belongs. We are a beacon of hope for our forests and community."
(substitute "animal friends" for "forests")
"Stop demanding murder on a daily basis, It's unethical."
-Matthew Lush
"Because the heart beats under a covering of hair, of fur, feathers, or wings, it is, for that reason, to be of no account?"
- Jean Paul Richter
I love all of these quotes. :D
One more to add. I don't think I saw this on here yet.
"I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being."
-Abraham Lincoln
Not veg*n..and I don't know who said if first...
The world would be a very boring place if we were all the same.
Softly, softly, softly catches the monkey.

When my DH wanted a reason for my becoming veggie, I showed him that verse! 8) Still working on his conversion though but he doesn't try to undermine me since then.
My own quote (might be stupid)
"I don't know...but I just think that all living things want to do just that...live. Live free from a life of pain and suffering. Free from pain and sorrow. Is that not what everything living and alive wants, craves, and desires"?
-dave
I really don't know who said these words, but I find them very powerful.
"Don't eat anything that you can't eat raw and don't eat anything that can run away from you"
"Don't eat things that once had a Mother"
this is not a veg*n quote, but it is a good one (although the source that keeps rattling it off is annoying me)!!
Oprah keeps quoting "her good friend Maya Angelou" as saying,
We did what we knew, and when we knew better, we did better."
i still like the quote, and i think of it often.

I love this thread 8)
I thought I'd add a couple of new ones I found (or rather, new to me - they're very old quotes)
"What is a charitable heart? It is a heart that is burning with love for the whole creation, for men, for the birds, for the beasts, for all creatures. He who has such a heart cannot see or call to mind a creature without his eyes being filled with tears by reason of the immense compassion which seizes his heart; a heart which is softened and can no longer bear to see or learn from others of any suffering, even the smallest pain, being inflicted upon a creature. This is why such a man never ceases to pray also for the animals, for the enemies of the truth, and for those who do him evil, that they may be preserved and purified. He will pray even for the reptiles, moved by the infinite pity which reigns in the hearts of those who are becoming united with God."
-St Isaac the Syrian, 7th century
And this one - it's actually a prayer by St. Basil the Great (370 AD)
"O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, our little brothers to whom Thou hast given this earth as their home in common with us. May we realize that they live not for us alone, but for themselves and for Thee, and that they love the sweetness of life even as we, and serve Thee better in their place than we in ours."
This is such a cool thread!! And immediately I thought of the song that turned me vegetarian almost the next day,
Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And a death for no reason is MURDER[/i The Smiths Meat is Murder
"My refusing to eat meat occasioned inconveniency, and I have been frequently chided for my singularity. But my light repast allows for greater progress, for greater clearness of head and quicker comprehension." -Benjamin Franklin
"I continue to challenge Fox. MoveOn’s right about a lot of things they said about Fox. But, you know, I’m a presidential candidate. I have to be ready to go into the lion’s den. I’m a vegetarian and a vegan — I mean, maybe the lion doesn’t want to eat me because I’m a vegan." -Dennis Kucinich
"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that Ic an do, or any kindness I can show to any creature, let me do it now. LEt me not defer it, for I shall not pass this way again."
Stephen Grellet (a quaker leader)
I also like this one that I saw aon a t-shirt. Its not only for vegans though..it said "Spay yo bitch!"

;D I LOVE that!
Men hunt I think maybe because they have something wrong with thier own equipment and they need something else to shoot.
-Pamela Anderson
Pam's quote is my favorite so far! LOL! ;D
CloseYourEyestoSee--Glad you quoted Mr. Kucinich. He's the only politician I seem to have any respect for.
“The Earth does not belong to man; Man belongs to the Earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.”—Chief Seattle
"I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the 'lower animals' (so called) and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me." --Mark Twain (Letters From Earth)
"Of all the creatures, man is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he's the one that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot." - -Mark Twain
i totally just updated the quotes section on my facebook.
now, this isn't a quote, but the higher someone's iq is, the more likely they are to be vegetarian

this makes me feel good about myself.
and as an ex-astrophysics major, i was excited to see how many scientists people quoted on here, and can't wait to share with the physics club.
Not veg*n, but I think go along with the veg*n spirit... :)
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." -Plato
"Help your brother's boat across and your own will reach the shore." - Hindu proverb
"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Another non-vegan quote but one I think is valuable and the more you think about it the more sense it makes:
"Love doesn't mean looking at each other, it means looking together in the same direction."
And the good Spanish classic:
"Knowledge doesn't take up space." You can learn and learn and still have room for more!
