The official, amazing, aimless chitchat thread.

So this is where we go to make small talk that doesn't really fit into other threads.
It's the thread with no attention span!

Frequent, arbitrary changes of topic are encouraged.  In fact, they are mandatory.

So, I was just thinking, wouldn't it be awesome to have the decor in each room of your house be inspired by a food?  Like, I was cutting up eggplant today, making my accidental eggplant chips, and I though, wow, this eggplant looks so pretty against this green plate!  I would love to  have a room inspired entirely by eggplant colors.  And then I thought there could be ones inspired by mangoes and apples and sweet potatoes and pretty much any other pretty food.

Hey, a friend of mine made these really awesome mosaics of all her food pictures based on color.  THIS is what I mean:

So, what was I saying?

In my rush to clean my house to move, last week I threw out all of my bead making stuff.  I used to make glass beads, but I never had a proper torch so it was harder to do.

One bad thing about warmer weather here in our apt..is that we have to open the windows (no AC, and it gets cooler at night), but then all the noises come in! It's good that lots of people go away in the summer..and it's good that we no longer have a HORRIBLE neighbor..but there are lots of loud sounds!  :err:

I understand.  My bf and I were going to move next year but decided it would be better/cheaper if we bought the house we were living in now and stay for a few more years.  Anyway my point is that it's right off a busy street and very loud.  The wintertime is fine because all the windows are closed but now that they are open all you hear is traffic all day and night long.  It doesn't even stop at night.  When i first moved in I had to wear earplugs because everytime a truck went by it woke me up.  Also there is a street lamp right outside out bedroom window so the blinds have to be down at night or the light shines right in my eyes.

my neighbor and her bf are very redneck.....she  screams stuff like, "I done told you to leave"    she always screams everything in groups of 3, then when he walks out she screams, "where the f___ are you going???"  I just want to scream out..."you freaking told him to leave dumbass"

my finals end on tuesday  (started on thurs) and my bf came up (from l.a. to merced) for the weekend to pick up all my stuff (on-campus students have to move out for the summer) since I don't have a car. So nice to have a break between finals... we did lots of nothing (my favorite!) and went to the bagel bakery  :)>>>

I'm going to have 40 extra dollars on my meal plan, which doesn't roll over until next year. I already bought $250 dollars worth of Steaz soda (green tea vegan soda), 2 cases of chocolate soymilk, and 3 cases of diet pepsi (for my mom), and I STILL have some extra money. I'm thinking on Tuesday before I leave I'll just offer to pay for a few random stranger's lunches at the dining commons. I'll never drink all that soda.

Ha ha ha!!  I think I kind of get what you mean there - my mum only ever eats things like egg and chips (fries to you guys I guess), burger and chips, pork steak and potatoes, anda special treat of roast dinner at the weekends (as in roast meat with roast potatoes and maybe 1 or sometimes 2 veggies).

OMG! How can people eat like that? I feel so icky if I don't get enough fruits and veggies that I stop wanting to eat anything. Seriously, no wonder the colonialists rebelled :)
(mmm, tea, though)

PS I'm english!

haha. i'm not saying it a negative way, but in general english food has very little seasoning and it's very meat and potatoes.. ya know?

i enjoy stuff like that, too, though.
oh yeah, and i made rolls, too. i knew that way messed up. i have like everything ready pretty much but still have about an hour until i need to start doing final things (so that everything is warm/done).

Sorry to hear that. Reminds me of one time I went house hunting... (groovy flashback waves)... I was looking at this cave of a house that felt eerily like it was haunted and had nasty red shag carpet :P Anyhow, I went around the side to look at the AC unit - the neighbors had a few dogs fenced in their back yard which started barking at me. The neighbors proceeded to come out and proclaim "Hey, you making my dogs bark!". I couldn't contain myself from laughing at the girl's comment and the boyfriend? husband? cousin? guy got offended.

anyone every use google documents? good?

I used it for a group project to share spreadsheets and documents.  It's great because you can edit them without having to email the edited version out to everyone again.  And it's good in general for other things.  ;)b

I love this thread b/c I can post something..but not feel like I'm wasting space by making a whole new post. Good job, KMK (even though you were mean to me..).

I've solved a major dilemma! Over the years..I've tried countless methods to try to keep my roasted potatoes from sticking to the pan, which has always happened..to different degrees. Silpat! It came to me..and I tried it. I added oil to the silpat..(in addition to on the potatoes) to make sure that it didn't stick...and there was NO stickage!! The potatoes/carrots might have a bit of a different taste..just b/c they didn't get so crisped..tasting..but they are still great roasted potatoes...with none wasted! YES.

I had my first 'day' at work today...it was just regular first day crap...worksheets and videos....

eta (haha...I feel like I'm stealing this from you, hh): Patrick just said these are the best 'oven tators' he's had....they are his favorite food...and I've made A LOT of them over time..yay!

Aw, AC, I was all set to make nachos tonight and now you've got me craving toasty roasty potatoes. What to do?!  :o

I learned last night that neglected minestrone soup = minestrone stew. There I was at the start, thinking I'd need to thicken it or it'd end up too runny... but I overcooked it, and it became so thick that the toast could stand up in it by itself(!). Not so bad, akshully; the flavours were spot-on. But I will be more attentive next time I make it.  ::)

What is silpat?

I found a container of better than cream cheese in the fridge here I work. I totally forgot I left it here! There isn't much left, but enough for my celery I think

What is silpat?

The silpat is normally used for baking...but apparently...it can be used for anything! I need to start using mine more.

"SILPAT® is a non-stick baking sheet made from food-grade silicone reinforced with a glass weave. It is effective at temperatures between -40º F to 480ºF. There is no greasing required, absolutely nothing will stick to SILPAT and, of course it is reusable. You can literally go from freezer to oven with this innovative product. SILPAT is designed for all types of ovens and helps provide even heat transfer to your baked goods. Silpat is flexible and should be used in conjunction with a baking or cookie sheet and/or a pizza stone. We highly recommend SILPAT for your pastry and cookie baking. It is an absolute must for serious bakers. Our SILPAT is 16-1/2" long by 11-3/4" wide and is perfect for cookie sheets. SILPAT conforms to FDA regulations and is certified by NSF® and KOSHER and is made in France." http://www.armchair.com/store/gourmet/baking/silpat1.html  (this site is just the first one that popped up with a picture...you can buy them at most stores...or wherever)
