You are here

i'm freaking out.

i haven't had my period since march!
i lost 50 pounds this year so i know thats why.

i don't do nearly as much exercise as i used to and i eat a lot! so i've been in recovery since may.
but this has been way too long to not have it.

i worry about this every day. and i'm sad cuz my mom does not have a clue.
i hate keeping this from her. i'm hoping it will happen soon.

Are you pregnant? Don't say it on the board.

Go to a doctor somethings not right here.

Hmm... That is a long time to go without a period. Maybe you should make a doctor's appointment. I don't get my period sometimes for months on end. A doctor told me that she thought I might have this condition... PCOS. That's just me though. I know you mentioned that you thought this was due to your weight loss. You should talk to your mom. Are you afraid that it will worry her?

I didn't have my period all summer....basically it was MIA for 4 months.  I took 3 pregnancy tests (totally unnecessary) just because of my anxiety over it, so I know how you feel.  I had started doing a little more cardio than usual, so that's what I'm attributing it to now.
Are you on the pill?
Do you have any new stress in your life?
I ended up going off of the pill for a month, and exercising less and it returned.  I also ate a little more unhealthy than usual, but I don't think that has anything to do with it unless there are some kind of nutrients I was missing.

Sometimes I'll miss it for a month, but my doctor told me that my health is fine and it's probably due to stress....I never told my mom either, I just waited until I was at the doctor for something else to bring it up.

50 lbs is a lot to lose! Your body will be adjusting to that for a while....You need go to a doctor, you might be underweight and need to change your diet to make sure your body is getting what it needs

Also, when my period disappeared, my doctor prescribed me some kind of hormone or birth control to get it to come back. It worked. She said that it was unsafe to not have a period for more than 3 months. Really, contact your ob/gyn.

During a very stressful time in my life I lost about 10 pounds (I am naturally thin and underweight).  I didn't have my period for about a year.  You should go see a doctor.  You could just tell your mom that you want an appointment because you have been feeling "rundown" if you don't want to share all the details with her.

i am not underweight. (5'7" and 120 lbs.)

i am NOT pregnant. (15 years old. haven't even been kissed yet)  :'(

i am stressed though. (sophmore in marching band) ... enough said.

and i take in a lot of soy, i heard that can mess up meanstration. rumor?

and i have not told my mom because she means the absolute world to me and she doesn't sleep at night if i'm giving her something to worry about. i know i need to tell her. i'll wait 1 more month and see if my time may come.

thanks everyone!! <3xo

If you're only 15, then you have little to worry about, IMHO.  When I was a teenager my period was very sporadic and would sometimes disappear for months at a time, and I had consistent weight and diet at that time.  It didn't stop for me until I went on birth control at 17, which regulated everything.  At that age, your body is still likely to be adjusting to the hormones.

Losing so much weight so quickly is likely what has caused the cessation of periods. Losing your period is a sign of something being very wrong in your body. Last year when I was admitted to the hospital for my eating disorder I was 5'7'' and 119 lbs. I was classified as (mildly) underweight. Being underweight is determined by more than just the number on the scale vs your hight. It has much to do with body/muscle/fat composition. So at your hight and weight you may or may not be underweight- it depends. Now I should tell you that when I went to the hospital I was also diagnosed with osteopenia...thats about one step down from osteoporosis. There is a STRONG connection between the loss of your period and the loss of bone mass. Osteoporosis is very real danger.

also please note: Id id not say you have an eating disorder... or that the lack of periods are defiantly caused by the weight loss...only your doctor can answer those questions. I personally know how horrifying it is to tell your parents something like this. I was 19 when I finally told my dad. I lived out of the state at the time and had to arrange to have a ride up to Maine. i asked a trusted adult (my former youth pastor in this case) to go with me...I stayed up crying most of the night before. It was very very hard. I was so afraid of hurting my dad but i knew he needed to know. When I told him, he did cry...just like i knew he would...but he lived. He said he was so so glad I told him. I felt such relief you would not even believe it. I felt so free and at peace. If you need somebody to talk to...I'd be more than happy to email you or call you on the phone. First, congrats on the weight loss!  :)

But don't worry about your period too much. I was an athlete in high school and got my period maybe 3-4 times a year. Now I get it less than 6 times  a year which is normal for me. I've started grad school and I have 2 part-time jobs and my periods are becoming less frequent as my stress levels are increasing. It's to be expected. If you feel something is definitely wrong, see a doctor. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

i agree w/ the others, at your age it is common to be irregular and certainly the drastic weight loss will contribute.
at 5'7...you should weigh approx 135 .... 100lbs/ 5' plus 5 lbs per inch. (in general)
so you are a bit low.

but it might be a good idea to check w/ the doc, just in case....even if it is just for your peace of mind.
and im sure your mom will understand, im sure shes gone through these sorts of things herself.

I was the same way at that age.  I got my first period 2 weeks before my 14th birthday and didn't have another for 6 months.  Then another 6 months.  Then it kind of went every other month for about 8 months and finally every month.  Too bad it's not that way now!!!  :D

i don't want to have to take birth control.
i eat 3 meals a day and get all proper nutrition.

but i eat enough.
it does make me sad when i'm walking with my friends and they are talking about their horrible cramps and their favorite tampons and what not.  :'(

that's one thing i don't miss.... i had the WORST cramps. ugh. glad that's over.

Chickpea, try not to worry so much. From what I know about you (young, healthy, active, no history of eating disorders) you are probably fine. When I was your age my period was very sporatic and very light when i did get it. Having said that, I still think you should probably see a doctor for a check up and mention it to them. Please go tell your mom. Don't be upset when you tell her, just be casual.

Say something like,"Hey mom, I feel perfectly healthy, I don't think anything is wrong, but I haven't had my period in a while. Isn't that strange? I promise you I'm still a virgin, so I'm not pregnant, but I think I would like to see a doctor just in case something may be wrong."

Best case scenerio, you are fine & then you will know you have nothing to worry about.Worse cause,  you may have something wrong, in which case quick detection is always best.
