The Grain Elimination Game: GO TO POLL
The rules:
1. you may vote once per day
2. you vote by adding a point to a grain you like, and subtracting a point from one you don't
3. once a grain has 0 points, it is eliminated and cannot be voted for again
4. the game ends with a poll where you vote for one option.
note - "wheat" refers to refined wheat (white flour, regular pasta/couscous, etc). both wheats include stuff like semolina/durum, hard/soft varieties. "rice" refers to white rices. Corn includes stuff like polenta, grits, masa, etc.

Quinoa: Throw that shit in a rice cooker with some water. It's not rocket science!
Kids, kids. Let's settle this.
Quinoa.
It is easy to make - as Minke said it can be made in a rice cooker. Some places say to rinse it, but I've never found it necessary, and it falls through my strainer.
It is tasty.
However, it's pretty expensive.
It also comes off as one of those fancy ass foods.
and, I heard that the sudden demand for quinoa has actually meant a hell of a lot less for people to eat from wherever we get it. (apparently the main producers are Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador).
Not very versatile, but that may change. Oats sure are versatile, but we've been using them for ages so we've developed the instant cereal, the rolled type, the soaps and face masks, the anti-itch solution for chickenpox, etc. Maybe in time we'll find quinoa is just as magical, who knows. And there IS flaked quinoa for breakfast, though it's not common and I've never gotten it...
Oats.
Undeniably tasty.
Can be made into COOKIES. COOKIES, PEOPLE!
Can also be used for breading fried/baked stuff.
Cosmetic/medical applications
Whole oats can be eaten as a savory grain. It works for more than sweets!
Not cool for many gluten-sensitive peeps.
The gooey nature of oatmeal may be delicious to some and gag-inducing to others (whatever, you guys). It can also be a pain to clean up if you don't do it right away (but so is rice!).
So.
Both have strengths, neither one is evil! -_-

what is your "beef" the my dear sweet quinoa? hippie food of the vegan gods...
the prep is easy: rinse a cup of quinoa in a fine hand held metal strainer, dump it in a rice cooker with 2 cups veggie broth, some seasonings, or just water and let the rice cooker work its magic for like 20ish minutes, then fluff with a fork...
idk what the hell you're doing over there with all your jibber jabber... go make some oat slime milk or somethin! <3

i've seen 1 VW cookie recipe that uses quinoa... is that what you are referring to?
do you have any good links for recipes you have tried and liked? i have tons of quinoa (my gma bought me a bulk bag at costco it was like 5 lbs for $11 or something, good deal!)

No, I've seen already made quinoa cookies and bars. Sorry! I like quinoa as something savory, not sweet.

well i agree but i haven't tried it sweet... i love it for stuffing peppers, "fried rice" type dishes, i love serving curry over it, it makes soups into thick soups... and to think, i probably never would have tried quinoa if i weren't vegan!
Oh, the grains list should read, "Quinoa - with a rice cooker"? I missed that, I thought it was the grains by themselves.
Oatmeal comes with a cooker too; it's called HOT WATER! in a bowl. I have a hot water dispensor that cranks boiling water from the kitchen sink. With this, oatmeal is done in maybe 90 seconds, tops. If I use this water for quinoa I still have to cook it forever. I like quinoa in place of rice, I do, but I have a quart of it sitting idle for weeks in the panty because it is a PITA to prepare, and a quality rice is half the price and just as yummy. Also yes as FB says it is very expensive (hyped?), and its export probably is starving children somewhere. Oatmeal never starved anyone, it is against its nature.
One day when I am really fancy I will get a rice cooker.
ETA: I have tried quinoa sweet - with butter sub and sugar. Yummy. I prefer it savory though.
Huh? ???

so you really think this thread is about what everyone's fave raw grain is? ha! i doubt anyone here munches on raw rice lol....

dude they are the same thing preparation wise... seriously, just admit you are too lame to admit you cannot cook! hahahahaha

again, a rice cooker is like $20 at Target, i use mine ALL THE TIME... well worth the investment :)
My rice cooker was $10 and I use it ALL of the time and for many types of grains.
charlie, how are you cookin your quinoa that it's such a pain??
This was all mostly in response to SB, who I noticed has gracefully bowed out after creating such a ruckus, when he said that oats were only good for cookies and quinoa was a better breakfast cereal.
Just for cookies...? You wanna try something awesome? Grind instant oats up in a coffee grinder until flour; mix them with 1/4 parts corn meal (+ egg replacer, oil, baking powder, etc). Makes the most awesome (whole grain) johnny cakes in the world - with earth balance and molasses on top...DAYUM!!!
FB: boiling on a stove, worrying that the saponin gods are going to strike me dead because I did not have the time/inclination to rinse it.
ftr, oat flour is awesome for brownies. DELISH
charlie, you can make it the same way as rice! I've never had an issue with the saponins. I am not dead.
I've never rinsed quinoa before.
And SB isn't as lame as us, he has a life off of VW.

LMAO!!!
ya here we are on a saturday night bickering over quinoa and oats... kinda love it though <3
I hope I'm using the most up to date list....can't believe I've missed out on a huge portion of the game!
