Bad breath

This is ridiculously embarrassing but I hope my vegweb peeps can help.  My husband says my breath has become more rank since I went vegan (2 years ago).  I don't get how that's possible but have any of you come across this?  Any advice?

It's not a dental issue...I checked with the dentist.  I probably eat more spicy foods now so I'm thinking it has more to do with that but I also drink peppermint tea most evenings.

Do you eat a lot/some soy?

Does soy help or hinder breath?

Does soy help or hinder breath?

Well, for me, I occasionally had this weird smell from my nose. It was also associated to my throat feeling really dry..and I think I've finally figured out that it's soy! Mainly tofu and other processed things. That's just my case.

Miso makes your breath stink, I can vouch for that.
Also if  you have this "smelly nose" thing, lack of zinc could be an issue. I remember in Jr High getting this weird smell from my own nose...our doctor pinpointed it as zinc deficiency. Problem solved!

I do eat tofu but only once or twice a week.  My daily milk is rice though, not soy.  So I don't think I eat that much soy.  Although I do slather Earth Balance butter on everything in sight (soy butter).  I'll have to go through my cabinets and see how much soy I'm really eating.  I love miso soup...

By "weird smell from my nose" do you mean you're sniffing a weird odor or when you exhale from your nose it smells weird (like bad breath but from your nose)?  I just had some blood work done and all was well but I don't recall the doc mentioning whether she checked the zinc level.  I'll look into that too.

Thanks!!!

Yeah, that's about as much tofu as I ate. I think it's a mild allergy or something, definitely associated with soy for me.
A bad smell coming from my nose. I could never smell it.

Thank you.  Your info is very helpful.  I have a bad smell coming from my nose too.  It could very well be the same issue.  I'll make some dietary changes and see what happens!  Thanks again!

Know what"s great for covering bad breath? Chew some anise seeds, works wonders. They hand them out at Indian restaurants at the end of the meal, like after-dinner mints.

Huh. Our local curry house hands out vegan dark chocolate.

This is really gross, but for the last couple of years I have been getting tonsil stones (which can cause bad breath).  I don't know if it's vegan related-probably not-but I never had them before going veg 13 years ago.  Sometimes when I brush my tongue in the back I gag and then a couple come out. It is really gross and they stink!!! Apparently it is pretty common!

ewww! There are a bunch of youtube videos on people removing them. SICK! Some can be huge! Mine are not that big...and I only get them like once every couple of months. Gross!!!!
If you want to be disgusted....search for that on youtube!

omg l2a, that just completely grossed me out!  I have never heard of that but have also never heard of uS's stone thing. I wonder if they are the same sort of thing.  I don't have any tonsils so hopefully it is something I will never experience. Ick.

Add a couple drops of tea tree oil to your toothbrush daily before brushing. It is an incredible disinfectant and breath freshener

I'm glad I don't have tonsils.

on topic - tongue brushing is supposed to help with bad breath as well. I think it helps. I've used the toothbrush itself (turned to the side) and also an actual tongue brushing thing (my newer toothbrush has one on the back). Same effect.
