Roll Call!

Edit.  The following intro is a bit old.  I unfortunately ended my long term relationship after nearly ten years.  Just couldn't be worked out.  I got the house and the dogs and am relatively happy now.  I finished my online RN to BSN program and am a genuine college graduate at the age of 48!!!  Woot!

Edit #2 - I finally reached the ripe old age of 50 and am feeling fabulous!  I always get the "you don't look 50" thing, and I attribute that to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I deleted my Myspace page.  I do have Facebook and love to have vegwebbers for friends. You can private message me and I'll give you my name.  Or you can find me on the vegweb fan page.

Edit #3 - Finally went vegan.  The last couple of years, I've been slowly getting there, replacing household and personal products with vegan items such as vegan soaps, candles, cleaners.  I've bought vegan shoes, belts and wallets.  I'm loving it!  Decided to let my hair go naturally grey instead of coloring it so I don't get the "you don't look 50" thing as much anymore.  LOL  I now have a desk job in the admit-transfer center and hate it hate it hate.  I just can't be stuck behind a desk, and I'm the lookout for something else.

Edit #4 - Found a position at the hospital I currnetly work on an ortho floor.  I think I'll like returning to the bedside and not a desk job.  w00t

It's been a while and I thought it might be nice to for everyone who posts here to tell a little about yourself.  I took a little sabbatical from this site (went back to eating meat for two years..........bleech), but lurked from time to time, but have been a part of this site for gee, can it be 8 or more years????  But I don't know a lot of you.

I am a nurse.  I am a male. (yes, a person who will remain nameless called me a "she".)  I am gay.  I've been in a monogamous relationship for the last nine years with a great guy who now travels a lot. I was an ovo-lacto veg*n for about 12 years before slipping, I plead insanity.

I'm currently in an online program to go from an ADN RN to BSN RN and hope to finally graduate from college at the age of 48 next year.

I have a very boring blog here:  http://allnurses.com/forums/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=13

You're turn.  Tell me your business!

Hi, My name's Matt and I've been a vegan for about three years. I came across Vegweb searching the internet and it looks great. Just thought I'd say hi now that I signed up!

I'm a college student and a musician, and I'd like to meet some other vegans.

I want to go veg.  Mainly it's a health issue.  I weigh 450 pounds and I'm desperate.  I have a limited grocery budget of $50 per week.  I would very much appreciate anyone that could direct me to quick, easy and inexpensive recipes.  Many recipes I have seen her look so good, but then some look complicated and time consuming.

My ex-girlfriend and mother of my daughter is a vegan, and I would like to be at some point too.  I think I'd like to start as a vegetarian.  My ex enjoys good health I'm sure her choice of eating a vegan diet has a lot to do with that.  She is raising out daughter as a vegetarian which I am very supportive of.  My ex worries a lot about me and she's afraid I'll die young considering what I way and that I do have high cholesterol that is a real possibility.  This is a really nice site and I feel fortunate for having stumbled on it about 4 years ago.  I wish I had gotten started sooner.

Again if anyone is willing to direct me to quick, easy and inexpensive recipes I will be very grateful.  I look forward to getting to know some people on here!

welcome golem, you can do it! have faith in yourself. I am also on a limited budget for food at the moment, (saddly quite a bit less than yours). there are plenty of great recipes on here that are inexpensive to make, and just be smart about your shopping. instead of buying canned beans, go for the dry ones. it is super easy to crockpot a batch for a day, and freeze what you don't use right away for another day. stay away from all the "morningstar/boca/garden" fake meats if at all possible. those will take a good chunk out of your grocery budget and might get you through a meal. hope that helps some? and i hope you enjoy vw :)

Hi Golem...welcome!!! All the best to you.

Unfortunately I don't know how to cook on a limited budget, not that I'm rich...very middle class....just undisciplined in the finance department.

Just try your best to incorporate a wide variety of fruits and veggies of different colors, grains, beans, etc.  These will be naturally low in calories and if you exercise the weight will slowly and surely come off.  Dry beans are relatively cheap, low calorie and pack a powerhouse of nutrition.

Welcome Golem,

You might try to incorporate more russet potatoes (plain - baked or microwaved) into your diet.  They could be used for one of your daily meals - one ingredient and simple to cook.  They are very low fat, a great source of protein, very filling, they will give you lots of energy, and I have seen them for as low as 10 pounds for a dollar.

Welcome Elijah and Welcome Golem!!
Golem rice and beans are pretty cheap and if you have an aldi near you go there for fruit and vegetables or to a farmers market. I buy for a family of three and only use about 40 dollars a week. There are a lot of good recipes on here. Try some indian lentil dishes like chana masala or Dahl or some mexican dishes. I started my vegan journey a little over a year ago and slipped but now I am determined more than ever bc when I slipped I got really really sick and gained 20 pounds in a month. I detoxed and now feel much better. I've lost about 50 pounds and am no longer pre diabetic and my cholesterol is normal.

Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself :) I am Jennifer I adapted the vegan lifestyle Dec '09 and love it! I love trying new recipes. I just started planning out a weekly meal menu, which is going well, I find planning helps me be less wasteful and I spend less on groceries!

I have just moved to a new city (and new province!) Which is stressful but also fun to have a fresh start.

I am married to a meat eater, Although he did go vegan for a week to "walk in my shoes" so to speak, he did really well for a farm boy from Alberta! But missed eggs and cheese too much LOL On the good side I do the majority of the cooking so he usually eats my vegan dishes and just has meat as a side dish.

Heres to new Veg friends :)

Hi all!

I'm Jessica, 32 and have recently cut out animal products from my life. I hesitate to use "vegan" as I feel to most people it implies a level of activism I simply don't have an interest in. I never was a huge carnivore but I did love cheese and ice cream. I was shocked how easy it was to give those up and how great I feel now.  I must say that I grew up in Alaska where fresh fruits and vegetables, while always available, were like eating cardboard. They were usually frozen or picked so early to reach us that by the time we bought them they were bland. This led me to a very typical American diet of little produce and lost of processed foods. Ick.

This diet of mine is the final stage in a food evolution I've been going through for about 5 years now. Over that time I have read dozens of books on all aspects of our food, the ethics, the impact on our bodies and on our environment. And now that I've been living this way for about a month I find it incredibly cheap!  I had a bit of cancer scare which was the catalyst for me finally making the leap and embracing this lifestyle completely.

Like many others I've seen on this thread, I'm going through a divorce and find being able to spend time in my kitchen exploring new foods and devouring new cookbooks is quite therapeutic. Oh, I'm a librarian too so if anyone ever needs help researching a subject or needs good book recommendations I'm always eager to do just that. :)

Thanks for being here and being such a great community!

Hi Leppgac....being vegan to me does not necessarily mean activisim.  It does mean that I cut out animal products in all areas of my life (clothing, shoes, belts, wallet, toiletries, cleaning products, etc), but not necessarily taking to the streets in activisim.  My activism is how I quietly live my life.

In terms of diet, while I am not vegan or even strictly vegetarian, my diet is, for the most part, vegetarian in nature.  I eat very little red meat and cheese, some fish, dairy milk almost never. I prefer to eat mostly vegetables, grains, beans, tofu, pasta, soymilk and eggs(once every so often).  My diet has been predominantly vegetarian since I was about 17 and in the ensuing years there have been several long periods of time when I ate no meat whatsover.

Hi everyone!  I have been vegan for almost a year now, and loving it!  I live in Ontario, Canada.  I have been married to my husband for over 15 years, and we have 3 kids aged 11, 12 and 13.  I am a preschool teacher - I LOVE my job!  I am also a cake decorator (small side business from home), and teach cake decorating classes.  I'm very involved at my children's school - I have been on their School Council for years.  I love throwing parties: fondue parties, deck parties, martini parties.....any excuse for a party! LOL.  I love hanging out with friends, going out for karaoke and dancing.  Also love camping - finally bought a tent trailer last year which I enjoy much more than our old tent!  And I have the cutest dog in the world - Winston, he is an Australian Terrier.  :)

I am SO glad I discovered this website!  I am on here on a daily basis, and have tried many recipes.  I never really enjoyed cooking until after I went vegan - now I get very excited to try a new recipe!
