New from Illinois

Hi everyone!

I am 23, male, and currently stuck in rural Illinois for work (I study bees). I've been a vegetarian for 10+ years and I've just recently made the final transition to vegan. In addition to being vegan, I also follow a no-added-sugar/no processed food diet, but this is more flexible, especially when I travel.

I'm joining up here because I don't know any other vegans. My family and most of my friends are omnivores and it'd be nice to have some vegan peers.

Welcome.  My daughter and I live in the Peoria area.  I have been vegan for about 10 years, and my daughter has been her whole life.  There are a lot more vegan options in my part of the world than their used to be.  I don't know any other vegans in real life either.  VegWeb is a great community for recipes and support.

Bees are awesome! I'm typing this from the quad cities area in IL right now -- kid just started college here-- seems like at least the metro areas have plenty of resources for veg-heads! so that's something. :-) Glad to meet you! Welcome to VW!

I'm not from the rural parts of Illinois (I'm originally from the west burbs of Chicago, specifically Batavia) but I just wanted to say hi! :) Welcome to VW!

Yay Southern Illinois!!

I live in Switzerland now, but I grew and still call Belleville "Home"!

BTW, St.Louis has one or two vegan restaurants and Sweet Tomatoes has an awesome salad bar (in STL).

How's Southern Illinois? I miss it! :(

Honestly I'm not too wild about Southern Illinois...the lack of mountains and the surprisingly limited opportunities for outdoor recreation bother me the most. And my irregular work schedule generally prevents things like weekend trips.  But at least the people are friendly and the farmers market is always well-stocked.

I loved living in carbondale.  Great little college town and lots of good hiking and lakes near by.  It's been awhile so I don't know how vegan friendly it is
