Hello from kentucky

Hey, I've been getting recipes off here for quite awhile and decided to join because non of my friends are veg*n so sometimes it's nice to talk to other people that don't eat meat :P

I'm vegetarian but leaning toward veganism. I generally only eat eggs/dariy if it's a biproduct in something I buy, but I definitely have a weakness for cheese (which I'm trying to work on) and the occasional yogurt. So I'm getting there just not sure if/when I'll take the plunge

I've been vegetarian for about 8 months. I had been considering it for awhile because I'm a nutrition major and know that animal products definitely aren't necessary and a veg diet can be really beneficial. Then I watched the "Meet your Meat" video then "Earthlings" and cried my eyes out and decided to go on and give up meat, so basically it happened overnight. I think getting a cat had something to do with it to b/c I don't see her different than any other animal and I certainly wouldn't eat her (yuck just typing that made me cringe haha).

So yea, that's me in a nutshell. And I live in Kentucky and it kinda sucks. Vegetarianism is getting a little more prevalent but it's still rare to find someone that is, and I've NEVER met a vegan in person. If it wasn't for the internet I'd wonder if they actually exist, I think it's more likely I'd run into a unicorn lol Which would be pretty sweet

lol you're funny  ;D welcome! good luck on trying to take the vegan "plunge"

Lexington!! Very very close to you. Berea is a cute town, I like artsy/crafty things :D

Thanks for the welcomes! I feel so... welcomed? haha

And hespedal, I haven't started hating the major per se, just some of the things that are taught. It seems like there's so much they don't discuss, but then again the classes don't last long enough to get into heated discussions about veg*nism... The good part is that I know once I get my degree I'll be able to educated people about all this stuff I've learned since going vegetarian, whether they want to hear it or not :P I really want to do something that involves vegetarianism but I'm not sure what.

Vegans don't actually exist. We are a figment of your imagination

one thing that is nice about having a nutrition degree is no one questions me about if what i eat is healthy. (like where do you get your protein, etc.)

I live in Louisville, too! But I live over in Louisville, not Lexington. We only have 1 vegetarian restaurant, and no vegan ones around here.  :'( But so many are veg-friendly (like Dakshin Indian Cuisine, they mark all vegan items)! Anyway, nice to know other vegans actually exist here in KY.

Lucky! People still ask me, people that know I'm studying nutrition. It really pisses me off.... The worst is when they tell me things like "Make sure you eat for " because I just want to say "Ummm I think I know a little more about nutrition than you..." I try to hold my tongue but I know one day that's gonna slip out haha
Oh since I do eat some eggs and dairy they'll be like "well at least you can get your protein from eggs" but then I say "Well I never buy eggs I just eat it if it's an ingredient in something" then they freak out and say "then where do you get your protein?!!!!???!!!!" lol

I was born in Louisville :)
And at least you have a vegetarian restaurant, we have 0 here in Lex. But like you said there are a lot of veg-friendly places, thank god. Ooo I have a question for you- do you go to the Whole Foods in lousville? I've noticed the one here doesn't have many vegan options on the salad bar/hot bar. But the one here is a bit smaller than the one there so i didn't know if that was why? They definitely have a lot of vegetarian options, but there are a lot of vegan dishes I'd like to try but I don't want to cook them in case I don't like it, and there will be tons of leftovers. So I was disappointed they didn't have very many vegan options there for me to try, I'm not sure where else to look.

Lexington has a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. It's called Alfalfa.  I've not been there, but I here it's great food, not so great service.

Hello sublimelmf!

I've been to Lexington before and ate at Alfalfa and it was delicious! Do you ever travel up to Chicago? Not too far and amazing vegan eats, right? Or maybe it is far...my sense of geography is loose at best! Le sigh.

Anyway, welcome to VegWeb! I know you'll have fun!

Hi,

I know what you mean that vegetarians and vegans are rare in the south, I live in Mississippi.
I have personally only seen another vegan in passing, I was too shocked to even talk to them.

Chicago is a bit far, 6-7 hours I think. I used to live in western KY and knew some people from IL and they seemed to really like Chicago so I've wanted to go. Maybe someday :P

Yes, someday! And eat at Chicago Diner when you're there, it'll knock your socks off! And by knock your socks off, I mean make you so full you'll want to explode. It's wonderful!
