You are here

Greetings from CT

Hey everyone, i'm Mary. I'm 21 and have been lacto-vegetarian since i was 12.. with several 2-8 month periods of being vegan within the past few years.  I've been using recipes on here for a while now and finally decided to join.
A bit about myself: essentially, i'm just a weirdo with a heart too big for my own good. i currently attend a community college to fill pre-requisites for either nursing or medical school (i can't decide between the two choices, frankly the thought of applying to medical school is more than a little terrifying.) i live with my boyfriend and two furry babies, my cats are named after Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dali. My interests include attending local punk/hardcore shows, cooking, yoga, walking, gardening, occasionally painting, DIY projects, and researching the heck out of anything/everything that remotely catches my interest.

i look forward to getting to know some other members of VW!  :)

Hi aquelle! welcome to VW! I think you'll like it here. :-)

Have you ever considered OT or PT? very user-friendly professions, imo (I'm OT)... lotta the same prereq's as med/nursing school (premed cadaver labs & neuro, A & P, physics/ chemistry/ etc) but heavily sprinkled with developmental psych, kinesiology, & other interesting stuff too; lotta the same 'helping profession' satisfactions and job stability... respectable (not omg-Rockefeller, but quite respectable!) earning potential in a very in-demand/ recession resistant/ 'work anywhere you want' field, in 6 years... less terror involved than med school, with MUCH lower liability insurance premiums! And -- for me anyway -- way interesting/ challenging/ satisfying work... I've never regretted the choice... I personally think it's more fun than the others would've been -- tho I'm sure Tweety (nurse) and VeganRun (med student, I believe) would disagree, lol!

Anyhow: welcome! Lookin' forward to seeing you around!

I've had OT and PT recommended as options by family members and friends but I just don't feel like it would suit me personally, though I do fully believe it's a highly rewarding and much needed field of medicine.
Personally I've been drawn to emergency medicine for as long as I can remember. Last fall/winter I took an EMT course, and was absolutely fascinated. I finished the course, and also passed my national written and three national practical exams out of six. I'm planning to take a refresher class and do some more ride time with a local ambulance service to finish the other three practical stations and become certified. The only types of medicine I could see myself working in (as a nurse or doctor) are emergency, critical care, or psych.

You said you're "imo"? Is that a different abbreviation of OT? You got to do cadaver labs?!

Yeah, nevermind then... OT's great -- but it sounds like you need more adrenaline! we're pretty laid back. Critical care would make my palms sweat, and give me hives!... different strokes, right?!

Luck with everything! It's good that you have a clear picture of where you're headed... getting there is the easy part, after that.  ;)
