Gluten Free Vegan from the Midwest

Greetings from the Midwest!

I am a gluten free vegan.  I went veg in 2001 and full vegan about 5 years ago.  Love the life style.  I have a slew of health issues and have found this lifestyle to be most beneficial.  I look forward to meeting all of you!

welcome! I'm also a gluten free vegan.  Mostly soy free too, i eat soy about once a month.  Welcome to vegweb!  Where in the midwest are you?

Welcome! There are quite a few of us GFs on vegweb.  I have been GF for 17 yrs (celiac).  Am now going dairy free too, because as much as I love it, it does not love my tummy.

Thanks for the welcome! It's nice to chat with people who have similar ideas, as being gluten free alone is tough in Holland. Let alone vegetarian or vegan. This is the land of bread, cheese, and beer. Luckily, I've found alternatives for anything I would want and there is even a vegetarian store in Amsterdam which sells cute shoes. Yay!

Welcome! And definitely check out the gluten free threads in Dine n Dish and Lean Mean Vegan Machine! I'm thinking I should do a focus on gluten free dining newsletter, actually. And we're hoping to incorporate a search soon where you can search recipes by a number of different factors, including gluten free!

It'd be great if you add the search machine to the recipes. Although, I try to be brave enough to look at a recipe & try to make it GF. When you're new to GF and/or being vegan, it would be useful to find recipes with a search. Heck, it'd be useful for me, because I'd know which recipes I could do quickly!

Hello! from another GF Vegan in the midwest.  I was already allergic to milk, eggs, and wheat, so cutting out meat was no big deal when I made that decision for health and ethical reasons a few years ago.  Even though I'm just wheat-allergic, not celiac, it is easier to go totally GF because more people know what that means.  I am amazed at the number of people I encounter who think that "white" bread doesn't have any wheat in it... (I guess they think the flour is made from ground "white"?)

:> Ground white!!! Yes, people can be silly! I guess this makes me feel less exacerbated that I have to explain to my boyfriend's dad and stepmom that yes, chicken IS meat. NO, I don't eat it. I think we've had this conversation at least 4 times. Ground white!!!

Hey NLveganmama its hard work being new to the GF Scene  :> I have posted this thread in another spot so forgive me if you have seen it already. I just have to tell you that when my daughter was diagnosed as a ceoliac we trawled so many recipes and tried to print this oneout here and that one out there and my sister in law put me on to a book here www.GlutenGourmet.info its brilliant for GF recipes and also for Dairy free and PRESERVATIVE free which is the other angle we are going on now as a family too :)
Its all about getting the right info and being able to adaopt it in your life isnt it.
Good luck with your GF lifestyle and to all others that are on this road...I feel so much better knowing theres a heap of us out there 8-)
Cheers
Sarah
