You are here

fairly new vegan here..

i've been a vegetarian for awhile now, and just recently wanted to go vegan. i live in a small town in canada, so we don't have much to choose from if your a vegan.

what are some basic vegan things i can get started with.. like soy milk, etc.. just things that will come up in recipes. i love cooking but everything in my house has dairy in it! so im basically trying to get a list of things to get that are needed from day to day. :)

it depends on what you like, I guess.  But off the top of my head, the things I needed to have on hand most when I went vegan were:  nutritional yeast, vegannaise, rice, beans, earth balance, fresh veggies (i never used to eat fresh veggies)--especially onions and garlic, cliff bars for when you away and can't find something vegan, bananas (and other fruit), a lot of olive oil, lots of different spices--cumin, kosher and sea salt, fresh pepper, whatever you can get, soy milk, and probably more, but that's all i got off the top of my head.

To add to the previous posts...

nuts and seed (preferably raw)
leafy greens
flax seed oil and flax seeds
A good list of animal derived products.  I was really surprised to find out how long that list really is.

I haven't seen Tofutti products where I live, but I have seen Follow Your Heart Cheese and Yosoy cream cheese, yogurt and dips (although, I'm not 100% sure if Yosoy is vegan).

So Nice is the best soy milk. I know it is available in Canada.

Soy milk, rice milk, almond milk... If you're lucky, you might be able to find potato or oat milk.
Earth balance is pretty ubiquitous.
For prepackaged foods, you pretty much just have to get good at reading ingredient lists.  ::)

If you can't get ahold of weird crazy vegan specialty foods, just focus on basic stuff - grains, veggies, beans... and try and find a good B12 supplement, if you aren't getting enough from your soy milk or fake meat.

_Potato_ milk?!

I didn't have anything to add, I've just never heard of potato milk...
Wait, no one said egg replacer, right? Essential for baking comfort food ;-)

Absolutely! Depending on what grocery stores are in your area, you can definitely enjoy the wonderfulness of So Nice. I know Loblaws, Sobeys, Food Basics, and Price Chopper all carry So Nice in the larger refridgerated containers (the 946 ml tetra packs, for some reason, don't taste as good) Do you have those stores nearby? (I'm a So Nice pusher  ;)b)

Where abouts do you live? I can definitely offer some Ontario vegan advice.
