Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ
The big news of the study is that 1) atheists are smarter than religious people and 2) liberals are smarter than conservatives, but at the end it mentions 3) vegetarians are smarter than omnis.
Vegetarianism, while not strongly associated with IQ in this study, has been shown to be related to intelligence in previous research, Kanazawa said. This also fits into Bailey's idea that unconventional preferences appeal to people with higher intelligence, and can also be a means of showing superiority.
I fall into all three categories which naturally means.... I'm a genius! ;) Amazing!!
Most people have never had a real IQ test.
Mine is 141, which puts me the top 1/2 percent of the population I believe. Good enough for me.

Duuuude. We're just about twins. I took a proper one in college and it was 141 or 143 or something. I don't know how useful it is. I can do a logic problem, no sweat; however, I'm completely lost when it comes to crosswords, where I have to actually know something.

Meh. They do it at some universities and sich. I apparently have a hugely high IQ but it's not good for practical purposes. I still can't make numbers work for me. I had insomnia yet again last night and started saying my multiplication table to bore myself to sleep...and got stuck at 7x 9. Srsly.
Trouble is, some of the tests are so culture-bound that the results aren't really valid. At least they were in my day, like really WASP, so people from other cultures etc. would come out as subnormal just because they asked questions about situations they couldn't relate to.
Never had an IQ test. Never want one. Don't believe in any type of intelligence/standardized tests. It is impossible to accurately determine people's potential from a simple test.
The liberal-conservative IQ phenomenon has a somewhat complicated explanation, which I will try to summarize. Conservatives are actually a very intellectually-diverse group that includes free market capitalists / libertarians / Objectivists, who have some of the highest IQ's of any politically-identifiable group, but it includes far more religious and militarist conservatives as well, which results in an overall lower score in the aggregate.
Other factors come from the things that correlate with the political divide in this country: population density and fertility rates especially. If you're an only child you're likely to get more parental attention and have higher self-esteem, which results in slightly higher IQ scores individually, but fails to account for the tremendous economic disadvantages of smaller / negative population growth. In other words, if you take a family with 3 kids and shoot the 2 older siblings, the younger sibling will have a slightly higher IQ, but at what cost?!
And there's also a definite left-wing bias in government-financed academia, for very predictable reasons.

I thought about you for this one. You break the mold. You're deeply religious and are one of the smartest people I've known, irl or online.
Since most people have not been given an IQ test it is obvious that there couldn't be a large, diverse sample used for this study. It is probably looking at those that are at universities or apart of particular organizations. So, these results cannot be taken as a true representation of the general population. Though, it is nice to assume that because you fit in a particular category you are more intelligent than the majority. BTW, I would rather be functional than a genius. Of course, I am not that functional and a bit odd. Does that make me a genius?

I have no idea what a "large sample" is, but here is a description of the participants.
The study looked at a large sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which began with adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States during the 1994-95 school year. The participants were interviewed as 18- to 28-year-olds from 2001 to 2002. The study also looked at the General Social Survey, another cross-national data collection source.

Neither Bailey nor Kanazawa identify themselves as liberal; Bailey is conservative and Kanazawa is "a strong libertarian."
There are different test with different standards. Most say >135 is genius. Check the MENSA website for the required IQ levels from the different test.
The challenge with IQ tests is to eliminate any cultural or learned knowledge and to rely mainly on cognative capabilities.
Smart and scholarly are 2 different things. There are indeed certain drawbacks from a high IQ. Those with high IQs often have social problems, attention deficit, insomnia, etc. I have an overactive mind which creates chronic insomnia. I can't shut my brain off. Also, if my mind is not seriously stimulated, it wanders off to other thoughts. I cannot read book that does absolutely grab me as my mind will jump to other more stimulating thoughts so I don't retain what I am reading. I sometimes become engrossed in writing music or computer programming, or research to the point where I forget to eat and drink.

One of the reasons I'm actually glad I can't drive is that I'm usually thinking about something else or 2 things at once...which in this city's "mean streets" would be a recipe for disaster! Especially since the City, in their infinite wisdumb, has made a lot of the streets narrower than they already are and instituted one-way circulation. At the end of the summer holiday time. From one day to the next. With no warning.

I used to take it every night to sleep but I after a while it did indeed lose its effectiveness and extended use of it adversely affects your cognative abilities - similar to mild Alzheimer's symptoms.
I now take 2 L-Tryptophan, 1 Zolpidem (ambien), and 2 Trazadone. I still wake up at 3:30 AM and can't get back to sleep. A typical night's sleep for me is 3.5 to 4 hours.
Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep at night.
I don't put much into IQ. My babies father is REALLY stupid. I had no idea how stupid until I got pregnant with his kid, anyway, he took an IQ test and scored much higher then me and the guy is dumb as a box of rocks, has the maturitiy of a 5 year old, seriously!
My IQ is average, but I have a degree in engineering, with a A/B average, graduated cum laude.
My Babies dad who's IQ is higher then mine is a laborer with a high school diploma who is content to put unload trucks at Lowes and paint weight lifting equipment for the rest of his life. I sound conceeded, probably am, I admit, sorry.
IQ really means nothing. BTW, I am not atheist, nor am I religious, I am agnostic, and conservative for the most part, but liberal too. Middle of the line really. Mostly vegetarian, on off vegan, depends on my stage of bipolar at the time... But I do tend to be very ADD - like and have lived a lot more life then most people my age have because of it!

I reported this to my physics prof. and he was all '...say those again?' and then counted them off, and he is all of those things. Ways to curry favour with your teachers. :P
