Mini-wheat alert

This is really just more of an announcement than a controversial statement, but I wasn't sure where else to put it. I accidentally discovered that frosted mini-wheats of several different brands contain gelatin (from pig skin) in them.  :-\ How very odd and disgusting.

ya i would assume any kind of cereal with frosting on it probably isn't vegan unfortunately

Yeah, I used to eat those everyday for a few months.. I freaked out when I saw gelatin in the ingredients. Didn't expect that one.

My husband and I love Kashi Cinnamon Harvest 'wheat biscuits'.  They aren't frosted, but they have a cinnamon/sugar center that is definitely sweet enough without any frosting.  They are vegan, but the Kashi Autumn Harvest and Island Vanilla flavors have 'natural flavorings'.  I'm pretty sure there is something on the boxes that state they are vegan as well, but it's not as clear.

We eat these right out of the bag for dessert.

They aren't good for you anyway. And I heard/read somewhere years ago that most General Mills and Kelloggs cereals contain animal-derived vitamins anyway.

Two more ridiculous things, of this same type: *milk* in freakin' potato chips (slice/ salt/ fry; what does one even *do* with milk, when making potato chips??!!)... also, I went today to pick up some flax oil omega-3 supplements, which I usually don't use, but I like 'em during holiday travel when I'm away from my usual food routines... so, yeah, a request for 'vegan-friendly omega-3 supplements' yielded a bottle of gelatin-encased flax oil capsules... GRRR!

I blame myself for being in a hurry/ not double-checking-- but this was at Whole Foods, where (at least at my local store) there's usually a pretty informed staff.... Lesson learned/ never again! Opened the damned things before realizing it; not sure what to do with 'em now. Wouldn't veganish types be the main ones *shopping* for these?! Why, then, would you wrap them in boiled hooves, skin, & tendons? WHY??!!

The Frosted Mini Wheats at Whole Foods are vegan as of the last time I ate them about a month ago.

I had a similar experience at whole foods. I asked if they had any vegan omega 3 capsules and she looked at me and in a very smart aleck tone said "Well, there's flax oil...?" and I said "yea but it's in gelatin capsules" then she was a little more polite and pointed me to something else. She then explained it has something to do w/ the vegetarian capsules, gelatin capsules don't have a crease where they can be opened- they're completely inclosed so they hold the oil. But apparently veg capsules have a crease down the middle so they don't hold liquid as well. There might be more to it but it makes sense to me.

If you're still looking for one they had this one it was a liquid (it says vegetarian so double check the ingreds to make sure it's vegan), it's strawberry banana flavored and has the consistency of yogurt or one of those yogurt smoothie type things. Actually if you've had the coconut milk kefir it was just like that. It tasted alright, the aftertaste was a little oily but it goes away pretty fast

Depends on the flavor. If plain, I have no idea. Cheddar or Sour Cream&Onion I get, but plain? Or BBQ?

I remember being stumped as to why Lays Baked BBQ chips had to have chicken fat in them when other BBQ chips didn't need it. Heck, even their non-baked BBQ chips didn't have it.

Yesterday my kid's class was decorating sugar cookies. I made the cookies for everyone, and I am SOOO glad I brought in a little bit of my own frosting (Earth balance, powdered sugar and vanilla). I read the store jar of frosting that was there and it said "beef fat" and "lard". Jeez! sometimes he has the cupcakes and crap at school but now I will probably be a little more skeptical!

Are they just *trying* to piss us off, or what?!! What other explanation could there possibly be? For f***'s sake, who goes to make frosting & says, 'hmm, you know what would be really tasty in here? some BEEF FAT!' I mean, seriously...

It's likely because those things are cheap and have the desirable fatty qualities.  They are a by-product after all.  It's no secret that lard is a cheap way to make things extra tasty.  No one is purposefully being mean, it's just that most people aren't educated to know the ingredients, and those who do know but aren't vegan wouldn't care.  Animal products are cheap, tasty fillers.  That's really all it is.

I am trying to put "beef fat" and "cake icing" together in my mind and it is so not working... good thing I hate icing.
