Marijuana

What do you all think about it? I mean in general, your stance on drugs, if you smoke/ reasons you don't, etc. I really don't know what made me think of it, I just would like to know other peoples opinons of it. I was thinking of making it a pole, but I don't know how that would have worked out.

Its unfortunate that its use it criminalized and even demonized.
We just might have been deceived... on many levels.
I am pro responsible use.

Ugh, I have no respect for anyone who drives under the influence of marijuana.  That is sickening and enraging.  I don't give a fuuuuuck what you put in your body, but please leave the rest of us out of your line of fire.  Good god.  I'm so infuriated by that.

Of course with any study though, there will be a negative slant to it if its funded/ published by ant-drug people and a more neutral tone if it were say from a decriminalization organization.

That is just false.  A study published by a decriminalization organization will be biased exactly opposite of the way that a study by an anti-drug group is.  That's like saying that a study from the soy industry is neutral.  It is no more neutral than a study from the dairy industry.  Please use some common sense.

Wow you sound so enraged, good thing you have such a good argument or it would sound like an overreaction...  ::). And maybe I worded it wrong, but the opposite was implied for those for decriminalization.  And I have plenty of common sense, don't worry.

You said a study from a decriminalization group would have a "more neutral tone."  No it wouldn't, by definition.  Not from a group whose agenda is to legalize marijuana.  Any study published by one of those groups would have a slant in favor of marijuana's safety.  My point is that you can't use a study that you found on a pot-legalization site as evidence without delving into the details, which are nebulous.  My first reading of them seems to say, yes, pot definitely does impair driving, but drivers KNOW they are impaired, so they drive more slowly.  I don't want a fast driving or a slow driving impaired person on the road with anybody.

I'm not even against the decriminalization of marijuana, necessarily, but driving around under the influence is just horrid and loses my respect for that cause all together.

ledzepfan, you have to be able to discuss this maturely and without insulting people.

Seriously, have a civil discussion.  I'm not sure what your point is.  OK, so you worded something wrong.  Clarify then?  Respond to what I've said?  Something along those lines?  You're the one who wanted to debate it.

I'm not insulting anyone, and if thats how its coming across, I'm sorry, but I refuse to be "that person" in the debate forum who gets shit on for saying something "wrong". Oh, thats right it was moved to the debate section after I posted it in the Chit Chat thread, because this is the way the debate thread works... my bad.

I DID NOT WAT A DEBATE!!! And no, I'm not going to respond to anyone who talks about something they haven't actuallly done.

who said they haven't smoked before?  What did you expect when you started this thread????  Grow up!

Yes I should say what I expected when I started this because I haven't say in my first post, or anything.....no, I did, actually maybe you should take a peek at it.

Grow up! Really did you say not to insult people then follow up with grow up?

Maybe someone who has read my opening post could share their views or maybe they're scared?

I never said anything about having smoked pot before, or whether I think smoking is a good or bad idea in general.  I think it is a bad idea to smoke pot and drive.  That's all.

I DID NOT WAT A DEBATE!!!

Or, only opinions that match yours?

Disregarding all else - you told kmk that she didn't have a solid argument. Saying that you could harm other people is a really solid point in my eyes.
You saying you drive better when high is the SAME thing as any other drug taker saying that.
Point blank, it does effect a person.

IF we legalize weed, people need to be barred from driving high. IF people like you keep driving high, you're the same as a person driving intoxicated with alcohol. You ruin it for everyone. especially the people who are hurt.

put your claws back in and settle down.......take a breath, it's ok.  When you bring up a topic, not everyone will agree with you.

I have no problem with people not agreeing with me, I do not want a debate though. Which is why it made me angry that it was moved to the debate section. Ok, lets all toke(kidding!!) an imaginary toke and have an open discussion.

It hardly seems like you want an open discussion, but I'm really concerned about this, so here's my contribution:

The largest study I could find was a meta-analysis of 60 other studies on the topic by Berghaus and Guo (1995).  It concluded that:

"Smoking of marijuana causes to a more or less obvious extent impairment of every performance area connected with safe driving of a vehicle.  Thus, performance areas such as tracking, psychomotor skills, reaction time, visual function, attention, en/de-coding, and performance in simulated or real driving experiments are involved.  In each of these performance areas significant deterioration in dependency on the post-smoking interval--that is to say on the THC concentrations in plasma--is found after smoking marijuana.  THC-related impairment is concentrated within the first two hours after the beginning of the smoking procedure.  Attention, tracking, and psychomotor skills reveal the highest percentage in significant deterioration."

I'd love to read the methods and the rest of the text, but I can't get at it.

Also, I'm not apologetic for bringing up a concern about behavior that puts other people's lives in danger.  Knowingly engaging in activity that risks others' safety is so irresponsible.

What you need to understand, though, is when you're asking all sides to discuss their opinions you're asking for a debate. Which is why it was moved. And from the looks of it to me, things were kept 'adult/civil' ( a bit tense, but still relatively civil) 'til:

"Wow you sound so enraged, good thing you have such a good argument or it would sound like an overreaction...  ::)"

The rolling eyes emoticon in this case (IMHO) is fairly inflammatory.

Also, it is impossible to talk about a topic like marijuana out of context--and since its controversial, disagreement is inevitable.  Just like you can't post, "Does god exist?  Discuss openly!"  or "Abortion--So, What Do You Think?" and expect it to be light-hearted and without tension.

Again, I'd love to have a discussion, but we're not really getting any constructive feedback or contribution from the OP.

Personally, I don't care if you smoke Pot, get drunk or whatever...its your business, Just please don't involve others by getting behind the wheel of a car and driving. it dosn't matter if its  pot or booze...they alter your abilty and response time...if your going to do it...do it without harming others...

This is the consensus, because it's common sense. THC is a mind altering substance. It alters your mind, period. Be safe about it, no matter how you can "handle it."

Also, I originally messaged to have this moved to the debate forum, because it's a controversial subject, and it belongs here. That's what it comes down to.

Yes.  That's basically all I was saying as well.  I honestly don't care who chooses to smoke pot!  I really don't.  But for someone to say "Well, I feel fine and I drive carefully while I'm high," just makes me mad because you're not fit to make that judgment, by definition of what it means to be high.  An article you read on a pro-pot website can't really change that reality.

up to the same old shit, i see.  i'm sad this couldn't be kept in the chit chat, for a light and general discussion, where people would feel welcome to share their experiences.

i'm pro-pot.  it's the tree of life and has shown to provide relief to many ailments.  ask bob marley. ;)  i'm sick of people being afraid to talk about it. Stop being afraid.

just like any substance (which includes foods, sugars, liquids, herbs) it must be used in moderation, not abused.  abusers are the ones who give the substance a bad name.  blame the person, not the product they consume.

personally, i'd like to see people not do ANYTHING besides DRIVE (maybe fiddle with the radio or something) when they're driving.  I'm less concerned about someone all high driving around then I am about some dumb girl trying to finish putting her makeup on in the rearview and talking on her cell phone.

to put so much credence in scientific studies is to reveal how little you can think for yourself.  Any study carries bias and places unknown factors on the test subjects which aren't measured or taken into account.  i think it's good to read a study, think about it, and form your own opinion, not just take the study's results as fact.  i know scientists would disagree, but that's what makes them scientists.

Good luck with the masses, ledzepfan.  Stay happy.

just to throw in *my* opinion: kmk, you're not fit to have an opinion on the matter of whether or not someone is fit to make a judgment. ;)
