jerks

Whats up with peoples' reactions when they find out I'm vegan? Ok, a lot of the time I don't even say "i'm vegan," I'll just politely decline the animal derivative..(thats a depressing word)

Anyway, the other night I went to some little party with my boyfriend so I could meet some of his friends. They started BBQing...then one of them came in with this big old nasty bratwurst (i've always hated sausage, even in pre-veg dayz) and was like "MMMMM you want some of this?? I'm sure you've got the munchies! MMMM!" I was polite, I just said "no thanks" and hoped that would be it...but he kept trying to give it to me and so I said "I don't like meat; I don't eat it." Then he started saying things like "OH but its the best food in the world its so delicious how can you not eat it oh but i guess you like the other type of meat *wink wink*!" and then I just wanted to jump him.

I've tried to not let this bother me too much. I know we're some kind of freak to most people. But I can't stop thinking about what happened. Do people not know about that whole first impression thing? Do they not care? I never tell people how disgusted I am by what they eat...so can't they leave me alone for what I choose NOT to eat? I'm sure he was just a drunk idiot but GAHHHH. It's like some other kid who told me to pretend the cows killed my family so I could eat it. *MIND PUNCH*

OHHHH on another note: don't you hate it when people say: "Oh you can't have this." ? (did I punctuate correctly?)

sorry if this is a pointless rambling rant. I'm irritated.

What can I do or say next time this happens? I'm not very well-spoken and I suck at comebacks, and I don't want to be that pretentious vegan asshole. But maybe I should every now and then.

These are disgusting stories.  And people are generally lame.

I spoke to my brother on the phone for like 2 hours the other day and we got on the subject of food/nutrition.  He was very curious about my vegetarianism.  He said when we saw each other again (he and his wife are coming out from CO to CA in December) that he was problem going to try and get me to eat meat.  Right after he said that; he said he knew it wouldn't work and that if he was really bugging me to tell him to shut up.  He then went on to say that he's learned to cook loads of veggie dishes and that if I was happy, he was happy.  What, a weirdo.

I am thinking men like to challenge women on their life choices (??)

Not sure of others experiences but do women give women a hard time?
Not so much in my perspective, I dont think anyone has really given me a hard
time about my veganism, aside from my best friend that says I am a stick.
What it usually boils down to is that I am able to hold my own physically and mentally.

Unfortunately I think the general male perspective is still that a womans choice is still not equal.

I know this is a odd tangent, but I feel relevant.

I sometimes feel like people don't want to be friends with me because of it, like they think I will be judging them, or something. Or that they can't talk about meat or mention anything animal around me or I might be offended. I get the, "sorry, he is having cheese for snack" so often. I don't really care what your kids eats, ok?
So rather than deal with it, they just choose not to be friends with me.
oh well.

I hear the "sorry" all of the time. I think in my head "apologize to the cow and your body,  not to me." It's rough... It's hard to be extremely passionate about a subject and to befriend someone who really doesn't give a hoot. Sometimes I just straight up say "I don't care what you eat" and it always seems to end on a happy note. :) I don't recommend it if you're friend is a bit uptight or you don't know them very well.

.I completely agree!! You did right by standing your ground and not yumping him. ;)b  I know how hard the temptation can be though....I have my own shelf of seasonings in the kitchen and my family cooked their "dead animal" after I cooked my seitan and salad. My dad knocked over like 3 bottles of my seasonings into the chicken fat!!! AAHHH!!!!! I immediately said, "UGH! I paid for those. Can you please wash them?!" He ignored me and just stuck them back in the cabinet. I can't use those seasonings now... So I sat there at the dinner table silently flipping out and my bro started yelling at me about how I have an attitude and meat this...vegans that...bla bla bla...I lost it and just went upstairs before I said something mean. Because I backed off, I avoided the whole accusing and on and on thing... I'm still super pissed though  >:(

UGH! A similar thing happened with my MIL...not at MY house though, never.
She was disassembling a rotisserie chicken (she said I might want to leave before she did it). gee thanks.
anyway, her hands were COMPLETELY covered in grease and chicken skin and before washing them, she totally just picked up the salt shaker. I didn't use salt for the rest of the weekend!
then when she washed, she barely rinsed them off and i could still see a shiny residue on them.
if you are going to eat dead animals, you could at least try to be more sanitary about it!

REPULSIVE!! I don't blame you... This weekend I'm buying replacement seasonings. Call me fanatic but it's just so sad to me. I seriously want nothing to do with dead animals. I love them...I don't want their remnants on my food items!  :-\

I've seen women do it too but it's usually the ones who are desperate, pathetic and out to please dick men boys.

True. It's the same with boys trying to please their mates or show off for someone. Usually these "teasers" are teasing the teasee because they're uncomfortable with the decisions they've made.

Like at Starbucks a barista always has to say "So whipped cream and whole milk right?" And I respond. YES. ALL OF THE DAIRY. PUT A WHOLE COW IN THERE TOO.

It generally gets people to stop. haha.

I'm a non-starbucks barista...I always like to say "cow milk" to customers and "cow boob juice" to coworkers...i'd say more if it wouldn't get me fired. guh. working with dairy all day sure is gross...splish splash eww

Ugh, what a douchebag, I'd just be like "Sorry, I'm too good for that" since that's what they think we think anyway.

In fairness, it's a lot harder to be defensive when they're stuffing their face with "delicious" foods and the only thing vegan/vegetarian is bread or something. This is why I try to avoid social situations with non-likeminded people.

I wouldn't challenge him to eat 10 brats, do you really want that dead animal going to waste?

i had a banana in my purse :) wooo!

sometimes i wish everyone would just wake up and become vegetarians! ok all the time.

Unfortunately it's not just guys. Women usually go at it differently, though. Here, you get the women who tell you how unhealthy it is not to eat like they do. Which is superironic sometimes. I was told that being veggie was "unhealthy"...by an obese woman who'd just had a triple-bypass operation and "just couldn't" follow the diet the doctor gave her. And she said it to me at a potluck while trying to push cream-laden desserts at me. I finally had to say, "What part of the words No Thank You can't you hear?" So she put the cake on a plate and left it next to me. I pushed it away.
Dumb insolence.

Yeah, I think tomorrow at lunch I'll be like:

ooooh, i know you want some of my SALAD... so crunchy and green... MMMMMMMMM. aren't you hungry?

I don't really get those reactions much anymore. Maybe I got it more before because I was younger (immature peers or adults thinking I was going through a phase), or maybe it's because of my current scary personality. Or so I'm told.

You've always been scary.

Oh, man.  I only have one friend who keeps trying to offer me flesh, and she usually stops herself mid-offer.  We have a lot of pot luck parties, and the funniest call I ever got was from the gal bringing the dessert (ice cream).
Deb: Hey, um..I'm bringing ice cream, and I'm at the store.  Where do they hide the hippie ice notcream?

My mum is actually super-cool about it.  She has already asked me for a list of things she wouldn't normally stock and if I would be offended if they still ate meat.  My dad is...my dad.  :D

Say I don't like to eat flesh.

I always like what the advice columnist Carolyn Hax recommends in cases of extreme social rudeness: raise your eyebrows, look right at the person and just say, "Wow". Then depart.

This is definitely the best way to go. Shooting off witty comebacks just runs the risk of getting into an argument with someone who doesn't think rationally. I like to think that people who feel the need to insult or make fun of my eating habits are just giving vent to their own insecurities.

Wow, props on being patient and awesome. I'm with humboldt_honey but I would have probably waited for the perfect moment and tripped him. Ugh, I can't stand douchey idiots! I don't even reserve any sort of kind response when someone (especially some idiot I don't even know) trys to tell me how to live my life. I generally go with something really sarcastic  "Why am I a vegan? How can I stand not to eat meat because its the best?  Probably by using my BRAIN and making a conscious decision not to be a douchey idiot whose life is so undesirable that they feel the need to take time out of their schedule to comment on my dietary choices! Is trying to be a cool hipster part of being a vegan? =
Is trying to be an obnoxious asshole part of being a meat eater?... I could go on but usually they shut up when they figure their attempts to bother me aren't working. For the ones who keep on and try to argue I just simply say "I'm done with this conversation" and walk away. I did have one guy follow me and get into my face about it, but fortunately my 6'4 marine cousin kindly helped him back to his seat. ;D

I feel your pain yabbitgirl. It does seem like people who are in no shape to judge veganism are the first ones to tell me how unhealthy being vegan is and have some completely absurd information to back up their point. Its usually people who are obese or have a serious medical complications (stomach explosion, cancer, heart attacks). Fortunately I've never had someone go so far as to shove pie in my face!

The one that really annoys me is how people think that being vegan is trying to be popular or trendy some how. I don't get it! Being vegan alienated me way more than not being vegan. I am definitely going against whats usual by not eating meat  and no one is telling me how cool I am.  Seriously I don't know where people come up with this shit? ???

I feel like people have a very poorly understood emotional connection to food that's kind of like clinging to a religion...fundamentalists of all stripes get their kicks from degrading the beliefs of others to make their own faith seem superior. Some can be just like that, only about diet instead of religion. I think the main point is that they both stem from just being intolerant.
