Im vegan but I can't stand...

Stereotypical hippies.

There are a bunch of damn hippies at my school that go around slapping peace sign stickers on stuff whenever they get the chance. Then the go and drive to Hartford (CT) and buy "the good stuff" from drug dealers, which helps "promote peace and expand minds." Then they smoke that shit and go and eat a bunch of McDonald's "food." I know 2 girls off the top of my head that party often, and have had abortions. I don't know what is more sickening, their actions, or the fact that they are so open and laid back about it.

The way I see it, buying drugs from drug dealers supports gang violence. Smoking shit makes you weak and apathetic, and hardly "expands minds." Eating McDonald's... speaks for itself on this website. And abortion as a form of birth control is just fucking appalling.

All this stuff adds up to what I could hardly call a peaceful life. Granted there are chill hippies out there but most of them just piss me off.

Any of you guys feel the same way? Oh and by the way, did I mention that they smell bad and have scummy hair...

I think I've told this "joke" (more of a one-liner) before here:

Quick, hide the money under the soap!  The hippies are coming!

I learned that from a hardcore hippie.  We both laughed.

I'd be very careful about making that statement unless you have all the information to hand. Sometimes standard birth control fails.

I'm all for abortion (in the right situation), I won't lie about that, but I agree that if thats their only form of birth control they need help.

Being reared by hippies, and now dating a fellow child of hippies, I feel comfortable in saying this description isn't even worthy of the 'stereotypical' label, but the 'poser/wannabe' instead. Even stereotypical ones don't put stickers of peace signs on things, they spend their money on hemp clothing/products, concert tickets and organic health food instead. Mind you, they often do stink (typically because they're uneducated in natural personal body care products, not from lack of water), and some do hold the dreads.

Granted, I'm living in one of the 'hippiest' big cities in the US (Portland, OR); and your definition of 'stereotype' (seems to) differs from mine, but I can guarantee if these kids headed out this way myself and others would just shake our heads, chuckle for a moment and then move on with our lives. Beyond the occasional raised eyebrow, I don't need/want/have the time to waste on them.

Let them come, purchase the novelty items at the 'touristy' head shops, boost our economy and then go about their blissfully ignorant lives.

I've heard this comment before, and if it's like those, I think he meant not implementing "preventative" measures (i.e., birth control) and relying solely on abortion to prevent babies.  Is this it, jakexvx?

I agree with hanashi.

In terms of smelling, I don't think hippies bathe too infrequently; rather, I think most North Americans bathe too often, resulting in over-consumption of water, energy to heat the water, and any bath products used.  I don't usually notice hair, so I'm not inclined to care about someone's hair care regime.

As the hippie subculture aged, punk came in.  Subcultures have their own styles, so if hippie songs were long, punk songs were be short. Hippy music became more and more layered and complex, so punk was stripped down.  Punk people, playing the angsty teen role, feel an obligation to dislike hippies, playing the parental role.

Hanashi is right that people who are hippies don't go around doing the things you described, Jake.  The people you described are party kids who are playing with stylized hippie fashion.  They're not actually hippies.  The same number of party kids are playing with stylized punk fashion.  They're not actually punk.

yeah i see what you guys are saying. I guess im just tired of wannabe kids and partiers in general. i guess i better get use to it though, this world is filled with fakes (kids and adults.) anyway i know a lot of cool peace punks, which are basically punk hippie hybrids... and as for the birth control thing, one of the girls that sits next to me in class has gotten two abortions and hasnt had a boyfriend in 3 years. The other one has had one abortion and thinks "condoms are gross." kinda speaks for itself.

I think we can all agree that fakes, wannabees and poseurs of any stripe are tiresome. If you are something, you're busy being it, you don't have to look over your shoulder constantly to see if everyone notices, or make a lot of noise about it.

What cracks me up is when people wear shirts like this:

It might be different in other parts of the country, but in California that screams "I'm-not-really-hippie-I-just-think-I'm-dressing-like-one".

The guy on the right here has the authentic hippie look.  He's probably working on a sustainable energy project here.

;D  ::)  I'm busted!

Oh noes!  But it doesn't count!!!  She's not wearing it in California context.  On the East Coast, real hippies may actually wear tie dye.  I think lotus has a tie dye shirt and I'd count her in among the real hippies of the world.  But neither of them would wear their shirts in California.  Dunno why.  Just is.

Thanks for be so very quick and helpful, oww.  :P

Haha. We're all just a bunch of hippies.

I also need to add, it depends on how one carries themselves whilst/where they are wearing tie dye. As well as how 'worn' it is. Pretty much every hippie I know, possesses at least 1 tie dyed item of clothing.

Hahah I was totally thinking this! Look at me trying so hard.... awww. :P It's ok, (apart from that shirt) I'm one of those secret sprout munchers who goes to work in a business suit. I think my taste in music would tell you more about my tendencies than my general clothing - and I wouldn't necessarily call myself a hippie or a punk, but I have been labeled both before.

I like the point about the difference between people who just are what they are, and those who are trying so hard to outwardly be something that they end up missing the point.

It's interesting how different places view different styles of clothing, like hh says in California that shirt would be seen as pretentious and wannabe (and it's prolific enough to get a mention as a stereotypical wannabe item of clothing!), whereas here I don't actually think I've seen anyone wear a shirt like that since I was in primary school so wearing it down the street in my city you'd get a weird look but probably no defined label.

What comes to mind for me is like when the emo thing was starting out (the clothing style not the music) and people were saying "oh it's like goth/punk" but it wasn't really at all... I remember a lot of talk and aggro about people calling these "softcore wannabes" goths.

This is how old I am: I remember when tie-dye first came out. And it never looked as nice as that.
That looks like a fractal. I love fractals. One of my students is a musicologist and has made music using fractal formulae plugged into some strange software he has.

Haha.  HH, I was totally gonna find that picture of Under_sarah and me.  I wear that shirt like everyday.

hahaha after being at school all day the last thing i want to see is more tie-dye. i guess it could be worse, it could be pictures of  cheap scumbag Bob Marley shirts bought at hot topic or spencers.
