Hunting?

Okay, my views on this subject have drastically changed over the years.  Years and years ago I used to BE a hunter, I even tried deer hunting once, with no success, but have killed plenty of squirlls  :'(.  I did eat them, I had that much respect at least.

Then I just lost interest.

Then it became a neusance.  I like to hike, LOVE it in fact.  But when your favorite trails close down during the best time of year (November - not too cold yet, no bugs, not hot) you really get to the point of disliking it.

Yesterday I wanted to go hiking at a local state park, but to my dismay, 3/4 of the trails were closed to hunting.   >:( I was really pissed!  Then as I was hiking I heard a gunshot in the distance, a single shot...  I knew what that meant.  A testosterone filled man (with no brains) who THINKS he has something to prove by killing a poor innocent animal, who is probably terrified, but killing that animal somehow makes testoterone brain feel like more of a "man".  I imagined what it must be like for the dear right now, to not know where it is safe, to wander around terrified that at any moment that they will be shot!  I just wanted to cry at that moment, for the terror, the pain that that poor animal must have suffered, NEEDLESSLY!  Humans don't NEED to eat meat, yet they continuously go out to prove their manhood need to kill defenseless terrified animals!  How cruel can you get?

So, as of now, I am against hunting, it is stupid, ruthless, and cruel.  Who is with me?

amen

There are female hunters you know, let's not be sexist.

But, yes, I used to love fishing. Then, a long while later, I realized I loved being out in the woods and the fishing was part of the learned/brainwashed habits of my youth. I never really liked hunting, although I went because that's what the boys did. Glad I used my own brain (with all the testosterone) to figure out what was wrong with my picture.

I heard the shots this week too. Probably some of those turkeys I watched all year, following their mother, learning how to be turkey-ish. They started out as 10, dwindling to 6 over the summer 'cause there's lots of coyotes around here. I can be okay with the circle of life, but I have a problem understanding the circle of thoughtless selfishness that we call hunting.

Just so this obviously agreeable post in "Food Fight" isn't wasted :D  ...

Let's also not forget about the people who are shopping in their nice, clean grocery stores instead of going out and doing their own dirty work. Just because they distance themselves from the act of killing makes them no less liable for the suffering. All those body parts so nice and neatly packaged, given new distancing names, coupons for the special carcass of the day... Those people are no better than the hunters and imnsho deserve even more scorn than the men and women who get out there and at least take ownership of their apathetic mindlessness.

Sorry TFYOV, didn't mean to be sexist.  Yes, there are woman hunters too, and they seem to be the exact same way as men, testosterone brains, after all, woman have testosterone too.

As far as fishing, for me, fishing with no hook is the way to go.  I always hated hurting those poor fish, it has to hurt terrible to get a hook through their cheek, or worse yet, in their gut because they swallow the  hook!!!  But yes, I grew up fishing as well, and I remember it always bothered me.

And now I just read that NJ is going to put CATS on the hunting list, start a hunting season!

And how much more damage to the natural world can humans cause?  Sometimes I wonder if the "humans originated from aliens from another planet" theory might have some merrit, because we really don't fit in the food chain here.

Also, I guess I wasn't expecting to find an arguement here to end hunting, I was just venting, ruthless, needless killing of innocent animals by humans who have the false belief that animals are ours to do with as we please.  Anybody else sick of that mindset yet?

lol,  I knew you were venting, then thinking about the turkeys made me mad, and off I went ...

Let's not forget about TRAPPING. It's not just killing, it's torture.

Trapping is indiscriminate too. Any creature, any age or size can be the victim. If it was not the intended quarry then it's just waste, acceptable collateral damage. (caution long trapping story starts here)

When I was young I spent some time as a diving instructor/guide. I lived right on the beach in one of the Caribbean's top dive spots. Even in my spare time I spent a lot of time underwater. It was remote with not much else to do.

I got to know the critters of the reef. There was a beautiful spiny lobster I would visit in his cave. I knew where to find the one and only scrawled file fish I have ever seen. I would swim across the deep sandy slopes that hosted thousands of garden eels that looked like fields of reeds, disappearing as I swam past and reemerging behind me. But the star of the reef was a giant green moray eel we called Murray. He was over seven feet long and as big around as my leg. He live in the back of a cave just over the lip of a wall that dropped from 30' to 1,000'+. A sand shelf jutted from the wall at the base of his cave. A barely recognizable ancient anchor sat on the shelf next to the cave and another hung just above the cave opening.

It was late in the day and a tourist family stopped by the little dive operation that I managed in the ruins of a 200 year old sugar mill. They did not want a tour but they were all certified and rented some gear. They wanted to know how to find the best sights. I described for them how to locate Murray's cave. They returned from the dive and told me that they found the cave but the giant eel was not there. They said they DID see a large eel in a fish trap while retuning to shore. OH CRAP! The sun was setting so asked the teen-aged son if he could lead me to the fish trap.

We grabbed some fresh bottles of air and set out. As we approached the fish trap I could see Murray crammed in the 4' diameter, stick and chicken-wire trap. Along with Murray, the trap was crowded with  parrotfish, triggerfish, yellowtails, etc. Murray's nose was all chewed up from rubbing on the chicken wire. I removed the access panel and shook the trap to "scare" the fish into finding the opening. Murray was the last to leave, swimming toward the edge of the wall faster than I knew a moray could.

I continued to sabotage fish traps whenever I encountered them but I never saw Murray again.

Unrelated to trapping: Sadly I found my spiny lobster friend dead, missing his tail. Someone twisted it off and left the rest of him in the mouth of his cave. There were lots of spiny lobsters but this one was like a neighbor on my normal route through the reef to the edge of the wall.

Here are some pics - The lobster in his cave and a large crab that I could not remove from a fish trap.

I used to love fishing...but then I realised that what I loved was actually just having an excuse to sit out all night near the lake doing nothing but listening to the night. Half the time there wasn't any bait on my hook (and they baited with some kind of "cheese" thing, thank goodness, not critters.) I hardly ever actually caught anything.

I could sit and dangle an empty line (hookless) in the water and no one would be the wiser and they'd let me sit there...and feel sorry for me. "Poor lady hasn't caught a thing all day!" And they'd be weally, weally qwiet so as not to scare my fish away.

I've never hunted but I have family that does. I used to eat the deer meat they would bring home. Obviously, I've since changed my tune.

If humans stopped eating meat and went vegan (as we all know, this will never happen unfortunately) can you imagine what it would do to the planet?  Farmers would no longer have a reason to shoot groundhogs, coyotes, wolves, etc.  The only animals shot would be the very few who wander into neighborhoods and treaten our children.  The poplulations animals of all types would explode.  It would start out with game animals as since nobody would  hunt anymore the "game" animals populations would explode.  For a few years the whole ecosystem would be off kilter, first "game" animals, then predators, then it would eventually fall into balance.

Our children would be able to fall asleep to the sound of wolf song at night.  Smog and polution would be reduced, animals would for the most part loose their fear of humans.  We could go hiking in the park and deer would come right up to us, eat grass by us not more then five feet away, because they would see us as fellow herbavores, nothing to fear.

It would be a marvelous world where  humans and animals lived side by side in harmony, crop lands now used for growing crops for cattle would be converted into wildlife sactuarys and parks.  Animals would have  new homes, more space.  I wish I lived there, on this world.

So, I have gone back to veganism, though I refuse to call myself "vegan" because I do want the option of eating meat occasionally.

No way. Hunting is the best! I love to shoot an animal in the leg, and then come slowly slit its throat, watch the blood drip down their bodies and use their meat to make jerky! YUM!!!!

Sucking the blood from a warm heart is my favorite part.

My SO is a hunter, and I respect it completely.  He eats everything he kills, just like an animal in the wild would..

TRAPPING is horrible.  Those poor animals sit there for hours in pain.
TROPHY HUNTING is disgusting.  Let's get the biggest buck and throw the body out (not even feeding it to coyotes half the time) and hang the head on the wall.

BUT hunting for food is no different than an animal doing so.  Cue the debate on people not being built to hunt...Lions developed sharp teeth and claws for hunting purposes.  Humans developed bipedalism, leaving their hands free to make tools, yes, to hunt.  So my boyfriend is part of the circle of life, hunting only as much as he needs to eat, nothing left over.  And he is resisting consumerism and does not support the meat industry.

Hunting is WAY MORE HUMANE than mass producing animals as if they were just products to be sold.  His meat is as clean and pure as it comes, and in no way is he a bloodthirsty psychopathic killer who ends lives for the fun of it.

I agree with the above post.  I think if someone is going to eat meat, they should HAVE to kill it themselves, just like animals do.  If that was the case, and they didn't have factory farming to hide the grisly truth of where their meat comes from, a lot more people would be vegetarian because they couldn't handle it!
