How vegan are you?

I guess this question boils down to why are you vegan in the first place?  I was ovo-lacto until I found out my son is lactose intollerant so I switched us over to vegan diet with great results so far.  But I do believe that eating meat (not dairy!) is healthy occasionally, just not on a daily basis.  So I decided to take the stand for myself and my son that as long as I kill the animal myself (as in hunting and fishing) then it is okay to eat meat, and eggs are okay if I raise the chickens myself so I know they have a good life.  Of course, I don't have a fishing liscence nor a hunting liscence, nor do I own chickens, and I can't own chickens because of where  I live.  I am strick to not support the meat dairy or egg industry due to the horrible cruelty that goes on.  I am not going to give them my money, because by doing that I am in essence doing it myself!  But if I fish in a river and catch the fish, the fish had a good life, free, lived as a fish is supposed to live, and I kill it, then I will be sure to kill it as quickly and painlessly as possible, and I will be respectful of it and it's feelings.

I think part of the reason I feel this way is because I love fishing, and I love to eat the fish I catch, it is one of my very pleasent child hood memories and I want to raise my son the same way, to be respectful of what you eat.

Does that  make me a horrible vegan?

not only does it make you a horrible vegan.  it makes you a horrible person.

i kid.  i kid.

i never in a million years expected to be a vegan.  i got halfway through "eating animals" and the sight of meat made me upset.  i refuse to kill anything.  even a fish.  i don't need it.  so why kill it?

I think if you read up on what kind of water those cute little fish are swimming in, you might change your mind about eating them.  Have you read The Food Revolution?

it doesn't make you a horrible vegan. it makes you not a vegan, at all.

exactly, if you eat meat occasionally, no matter how you get it, you are not even a vegetarian.

Um yes! Sorry I can't support you on this one... Animal flesh is not a necessary part of a human diet... Total gluttony... Rationalize all you want, there is no way to ethically murder an animal... I'm sad you came to this conclusion you and your son seemed to be doing so great :(

I don't know what your financial situation is, but where I live there are many people that supplement their diets with animals that they hunt and fish they catch. They say that they could not feed their families without these animals. I do not, personally, quite buy their arguments, but until I am in their shoes I will not judge their choices. I think that there are many choices in life and sacrifices that can be made in non-food aspects that can allow someone to eat a healthy, vegan diet cheaply. That being said, I think that it's very possible to raise your son with wonderful memories and great experiences without fishing or hunting.

I just think you need to be able to pinpoint exactly what you're reaching for--if it's memories, you can do this any number of ways. If it's to supplement your diets for cheap, there are other adjustments that can be made. If you just want to eat fish because you like it, then that is completely your decision, but please don't call yourself a vegan in public. The omnis are already sooo confused.

Oh, don't get me wrong, we are doing great!  And we don't eat meat, we are inddeed vegan, at least right now, and I intend to stay that way for awhile.  Like I said, I don't have a fishing or hunting liscence so I am not fishing or hunting (I will not poach, I am against that too!).

I guess my point is, why are you vegan?  For me it is mostly becuase I want to boycott factory farming as I think it is horribly wrong.

Yeah, by the technical definition of the term if you consume animal products then you are not vegan, you are right, believe me, right now my son and I are vegan.

I think I just miss fishing and I loved it when I was a kid.  The weather is warming up, and I remember casting a line out on the water early in the morning, the lake was like a sheet of glass, there was that morning haze hanging in the air, the crickets were chirping and the frogs would peep, and the only human sound was the genly click of the fishing pole as the lure was cast out and reeled back in.  My grandpa and I used to sit side by side on that old dock, the same dock that get crazy in the afternoon with my uncles, cousins and I jumping off of it and playing the "climp up on the floating intertube and stand on it while others try to knock you off" game.  Such a wonderful memory...

You know, I think I just miss that old lake.  One thing I don't like is the smell of fish that was always in the old shed where the fishing poles were stored, yuk.

You know, you are right.  I am thinking of it, and I realize that there are better memores I can make for him.  I will take him horseback riding, backpacking, camping, hiking, floating on the river, etc.  Also all great memories!

sounds like you could just take the hook off.  put a weight on the end of that bad boy.  and cast your ass off!

no harm there... you'll just look like a huge moron if anyone see what you're really doing.

Ha ha, you are right!!!!  Maybe that is what I will do.

I never could stand poking a hook in those poor worms.  My uncles and grandpa had  no problem with it, but I just couldn't stand it.  I preferred to use those fake plastic worms.

I totally understand wanting to be outside, especially when it starts warming up and animals are more active and the plants are beautiful. My boyfriend used to hunt, and I asked him why and he said he liked being able to get up early and see the dew on the grass and the morning summer fog, feel the air when it starts to warm up. He also liked to spend time with his dad. So, I asked him, why not go hiking? Get up at 5 AM and hike to a lake and sit and watch the sun rise with a cup of (fair trade organic! :)) coffee. He got my point.

It sounds like you and your son will have plenty of happy memories, fishing or not.
