Alcohol

Is it bad to like it? I've for the most part waited until I was 21 to drink, or at least go out of my way to get some. And I like it. I bought some Bicardi a little over a week ago, and I've hardly had any, but I do like it and want to try other types of liquor. I just don't want people to think I'm turning into an alcoholic (it doesn't run in the family).

Your thoughts?

i think as long as you are careful with it, it is fine. i am one of those people that think it isn't as ok as people normally think, but that is due to extreme overindulgence and not looking out for your actions (you can do really dumb things while drunk, just as on most other drugs).

i personally like to drink a couple of times a month (like, a few drinks.. which for me = drunk). i just make sure i am doing so responsibly, as dumb as that sounds (drinking and driving ad, anyone?)

I think as long as you don't let alcohol rule your life or you don't drink and drive it's fine.

Personally I don't drink....I just don't like the taste.

i looove the taste of beer. that is why i have not successfully 'given up' (like when i went 100% raw, that was one of the few things i missed)

Oh, I'm stealing your thread.

I need some vegan cheap, white wine suggestions. I don't drink..and I've never purchased any vegan alcohol. We are having a guy over for dinner..and he's bringing wine. I want to suggest something so that P can drink, if he wants. I've looked at the lists..but I don't even know which ones are common/easily found.

Yeah, that's the list I was looking at. Like I said, I don't know which of those are commonly found in stores.  :-\

Oh, and as for me, well.............

I went to a stupid little Catholic college my freshman year, and all they do there is drink...ALL. the. time. and in heavy excess, I might add.
So of course, having abstained (save for like 2 occasions) throughout high school, and now miles away from home and with new friends in the theater crowd, I start drinking tons at parties, almost always getting way too drunk. puking on quite a few occasions, too.  :-[
this carried over when I transferred to UNI, but this time it was with the theater crowd AND the marching band. and I'd moved up to drinking straight-up liquor...carrying around a bottle of Cap'n Morgan, Bacardi Raz Rum, or Southern Comfort around the party and not bothering with a cup. still excessively drinking, still getting sick fairly often (though by this time I'd learned a *little* bit about my limits), and just wasting my money and my time with the stuff.

Then, just a week after coming home at the end of my sophomore year, my mom came home drunk from the bar (closing time, as usual) and took a tumble down our basement stairs and died. (woah! I totally dropped the bomb there, yeah!)
....since then, getting even moderately buzzed is not so much fun. I don't like the feeling as much as...other methods of enjoyment. and even then, I keep it all in moderation. and infrequent as possible.

this summer, while I stayed with Shane at his mom's place for a month, we always had a bottle of red wine open at night. for about a week, I found myself drinking a few big glasses just to ease the tension whenever there were little arguments or whatnot going on...ugh. wine hangovers suck. And I was pretty grateful once we moved out, just because I didn't have that temptation around all the time.

Long story short, LZ, I agree with the other posters. You're fine....Just drink in moderation and be safe, don't get too drunk too often, and don't make it a habit of drinking every day or using it as a tool if You're worried about alcoholism.

oh, and while I don't condone the use of other substances (not necessarily, anyway)...

oh, and another note...

I've found that taking a couple of weeks (or a month or more) every so often as a substance hiatus is a good way to detox and regain overall wellness. Cut out caffeine, alcohol, other stimulants and external drugs as much as You can...step down if You need to beforehand, to avoid withdrawal....but it's well worth it.

Yellowtail  ;)b That's the cheapest I go & you can find it anywhere. I keep a big bottle in my fridge for cooking & general consumption.

For dinner out I usually get something a little nicer. I like Frey alot.

Drinking rules. I'm drunk right now

Right back atcha!

Severe alcoholism runs in my family (Polish and Scottish), but I drink and I'm fine. I learnt my limits through trial and error (some dramatic evenings of error) as a young teenager which, while I would not recommend to any teenager I know ( I was a nightmare), set me up for much more responsible and mature drinking behaviour as an "adult". Drinking age here is 18 by the way.

I take care, I don't drink to excess anymore and as I said I know my limits. I have the alcoholic worry-monkey on my back too, backed up by genetics, and I make sure it's happy by proving to myself every so often that I can stop drinking for months on end with no warning and no adverse effects. I don't drink at times of great emotional stress, ie the death of someone close to me, so I can make sure I'm not relying on it to cope.

So believe me...alcohol is ok. It can be terrible if handled irresponsibly, but if you're conscientious enough to be choosing a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle I trust you to make the right decisions about what you feel comfortable and safe drinking. And some of the trial and error can be fun, and is definitely how you learn.

Simply trying different alcohols and working out what you like won't make people think you are an alcoholic. Go for it, have fun, be safe, make your own decisions :)

I used to be a heavy drinker in university. However, I never got into trouble for drinking too much. I have never been the agressive or whiny drinker, so I was never an annoying drunk. Last time I got really pissed drunk was last year, though, at a party. It was one of those nights when you didn't expect to be drinking that much. I also got my photo camera stolen that night. I had fun until I realized that. I haven't been able to drink that much after that party, nor did I wanted to. Alcoholism runs in my family too (but doesn't it run in every family, though?) I think it's okay to like drinking, but to not let the drinking take over you.

On the other subject, I guess I could do a research, but I prefer asking you, why would a wine not be vegan? How to they prepare so that it isn't cruelty-free? I haven't been veg for that long, I am still learning. I drink red Yellow Tail, though, so I guess I was doing good. :)

KMK, I just hope it's right. It could be out of date or something.... What white wine do you drink?

I was brought up in a family of heavy drinkers and although my oldest brother was killed by a drunk driving the car which he was a passenger in, stupidly I still followed my families example and began drinking heavily, thinking that this was fun. I would not be able to pay my house payments and other bills but would still be in the bar in the evenings until closing time. I made resolution after resolution to quit but it would only last until I was finished work and would be headed home. The bar was conviently located between my job and my home, actually right next door to my house. I worked at the local grocery store and the owner's son was an alcoholic in his 40's. He would drink until he would vomit blood and then stay in bed for weeks to recover.
Even with that picture, he encouraged me to make wine together which we would store in my basement to age. Having the grocery store they would have abundant fruit which would become too ripe to sell and then could be used for wine. I guess making that wine was the beginning of my cure. I had to ask myself how taking spoiled fruit, adding loads of white sugar and letting it further rot could produce something which would be good for me? The wine we made tasted horrible to me but was very popular in the neighbourhood. I guess it was very potent. I finally gave it all to the store's owner who would drink it until he passed out and leave me to run the store on my own.
I don't drink at all now and haven't for thirty years, about the same time I became vegan. I think they were both moral choices based on evidence concerning what was best. Later  I remeber when I took some courses at a local colledge one of my classmates was an alcoholic and had gotten himself in trouble because of his drinking. I brought him a bottle of organic grape juice one day which was packaged to look like wine with a cork and everything. I opened it up at lunch time and gave him a glass. He was completely sober at the time and said to me,    " This is the best wine I have ever had."  And he was right. It was the best because it was made from fresh good quality grapes not rotted fruit which is allowed to rot further mixed with lots of white sugar.
The moderation thing might work for some but again I ask why would i want to drink in moderation that which is not good for me, and which in excess causes so many troubles to so many people.
A few years back I visited my brother who is an alcoholic. He had a big house with a sports car and boat parked outside. He was sitting watching his big screen TV (3,000 dollars he told me). He had everything this world could offer him. I commented on how well he had done and he held up his bottle of beer and said " If I didn't have this I wouldn't have anything" I hate to sound to preachy but there are just too many people like my brother who have been deceived to think that alcohol actually adds something to their lives when all it does is take away. It tales away their health, their money and often times their lives.
