Vegan in Germany

I heard that all beer and bread in Germany is Vegan, can anyone confirm this?
I plan on travelling to Germany in September 2012 so it's a long way off yet...
I am going to Hohenschwangau to see Neuschwanstein Castle, so I will not be spending a lot of time in major cities with vegan restaurants.
Any other tips for travelling in Germany?

Can't help too much aside from sending you to happycow.net for restaurant and health store suggestions. There are a couple users here from Germany. Hopefully they'll see this and respond.

Hi! I live in Berlin, which is super vegan friendly, so it's too bad you won't be coming here. I can't say too much about what it's like in other parts of Germany, but it's not true that all beer and bread are vegan here. I actually don't know anything about beer because I don't drink it, but my vegan friend in Bavaria has talked about specific beers that are vegan, from which I conclude that not all of them are. As for bread, you just have to ask. Usually the dark German breads are fine, but things like pretzels often have milk in them or butter coating, which sucks.

SB is right about checking out happycow.net for suggestions. And if you can get to any bio shops there is vegan food aplenty.

I've also read that all beer in Germany is vegan due to specific laws. I'm pretty sure I read it in Animal Ingredients A-Z. If I get time tomorrow I can look it up again.

So I found out the deal with vegan beer in Germany. The laws aren't actually laws like they'll get in trouble if they use ingredients besides water, malt, and hops (and sometimes yeast), it's just what they're supposed to use traditionally. I mean they're probably all fine, but there's nothing actually keeping beer manufacturers from adding other ingredients. So my friend just likes to confirm that the beers she drinks are vegan to be on the safe side.

My husband and I are going to Germany in Sept. He knows all things beer and has already been making a list of all the beers he's going to drink. I'll ask him if he knows of any that are vegan.

Ok, here's a link my hubby gave me. It pretty much says that 99% of German beers are vegan. Yay! http://www.vegan-nutritionista.com/vegan-beer.html
