Vegan friendly cities!

I'm very interested in moving somewhere a tad more populated with vegans once I graduate from college (which is in May)
I'd even love to get a job at a vegan/health place, while supplementing my 'future' art 'career'.
I've been looking around craigslist and places like that.. and it seems New York is a very good place for that (considering also that a friend of mine got a job at a place quickly)
But I also know Philadelphia has a some vegan places..
I'm only really familiar with Pennsylvania, but open to going anywhere (but prefer east coast at the moment)
Anyone have any opinions?

how big of a population do you want? what other things are important to you?
sometimes i think of moving to a nice veg-friendly city, but i really enjoy the happy medium i have right now.. where i have a smaller pop., nice mountains and fields and beaches, and still veggie friendly. it's just fun whenever i go visit SF or LA going out and eating a bunch, but i'm close enough to them it's not a big deal.

i'd love to move somewhere more vegan-friendly too. we only have one vegetarian/vegan restaurant where i live, and it is only open M-F from 11-2! i've thought about going west...either oregon (i have family there) or colorado....but we don't have the money to move right now... >:( maybe one day!

Yea, I'm a tad hesitant to go west just because all of my family is in the east, and if I needed help it would be hard for them to get there....
then again, I've been in college for four years and the last time anyone came here (four hour drive) was when they were dropping me off for my sophmore year.. and only one of them is stable enough to be able to help me if I needed it....
soooo, maybe that's a choice...
I really want to give Chicago a try! It excites me for some reason.. but I don't really know what the city is like... anyone have any experience living there?
Boston would be awesome too!
I'm a graduating art student, so I'd like to be close enough to a city, and in a place with good public transportation... cause I'd like to be fine without a car..
I'm just a tad terrified of what I'm going to do when I graduate... I have enough money to put down on rent, but I don't know if I'll have a roommate/have to join someone looking for one...
and get a job cause I know any art career of mine won't be exploding...

we also have a few vegwebbers in or near boston (JW502 , celtcat, dinkfeet).
BRR!! all those places are cold! become a PA to TX transplant like me : ) hehe just kidding. but austin is a really veg friendly city. but take it from me, it's not easy (or cheap) getting home (PA).
What's so vegan friendly about Boston? I live here and I was just wondering. I know we have Grasshopper, T.J.'s, My Thai, and a couple other places, but is there something I am missing? I mean, I am just coming back from New York where everything was SO vegan friendly. Vegan life was much easier there than it is here. Sigh... I miss New York.
hm... i always thought of boston as a super veg-friendly place, but maybe not! i know there is the boston veg-fest, which is maaaybe why i was thinking that?
sounds just as (or less) veg-friendly than where i live!
I live in Chicago and am not happy with vegeterian/ vegan choices I have compared to when I lived in New york and Hawaii. Well not much in Hawaii but an excellant health food store. If you want to try Kona Hawaii I have a nice studio for rent by the beach. LOL. I think Chicago is great for omnis but there is better places to go. My 2Cents

Santa Fe is pretty vegan friendly. There aren't any vegan restaurants, but there are vegan options almost everywhere. Lots of vegetarians and vegans. Also, chile and sopapillas. And I second the Oregon statement. Also, northern California, speaking from experience. On the east coast, we've always had a great time in DC. But it's hella expensive.
Asheville nc ROCKS! I moved here because of the veg-friendliness and I have no regrets. Plus there is a huge community of art supporters. Nice weather too.
i find that theres a decent amount of veg friendly places in chicago, and we definitely have public transit here. it is damn cold here right now though... i havent left my apt all day.

I fourth (?) the suggestion of Oregon/Portland! Rent and the cost of living is comparatively cheap, and we have the best public transit in the nation!! (At least we did 3 years ago when I heard the factoid.) There are TONS of veg*n restaurants here! Plus we have a vegan strip mall that has everything from a grocery store to an acupuncture clinic to a tattoo parlor! Jobs, if you're not too picky, are supposed to be fairly easy to come by. Although with today's economy, you never really know..... Oh yeah, we also have one of the highest minimum wages in the country as well, not to mention NO SALES TAX!

I'm thinking a lot about this. I might try to swing by there around Christmas to check it out. What is it like in terms of cost of living? I am going to have a masters in counseling next year, do you think I'd be able to find work?
