Subway's Veggie Patty and Gardenburger....not vegan :(

FYI, I hear this asked a lot and there is a lot of mis-information on the internet, or just a lack of information. The Veggie Patty is usually not even listed on the menu at the store. And I couldn't even find it mentioned anywhere on the website. It's like they don't want anyone to know there are vegetarian options  ???

This is from a Subway customer service rep. It's for a 6 inch sub on wheat or white bread with standard vegetables added. No additional cheese added, except for what you will see is in the ingredients. I bolded what I can tell are the animal ingredients.

VegiMax ingredients:
Vegetables (mushrooms, water chestnuts, onions, carrots,
green and red bell peppers, black olives), textured vegetable protein (soy
protein concentrate, wheat gluten, water for hydration), egg whites, cooked
brown rice, rolled oats, corn oil, calcium caseinate, soy sauce (water,
soybeans, salt, wheat), contains 2% or less of onion powder, corn starch,
salt, hydrolyzed corn, soy and wheat protein, autolyzed yeast extract,
natural flavors from non-meat sources, sugar, soy protein isolate, spices,
garlic powder, dextrose, jalapeno pepper powder, celery extract.

I have never seen the gardenburger anywhere, but I see the VegiMax patty everywhere.

The good: both are high protein, high fiber

The bad: TONS of salt, not vegan, and the soy that is a key ingredient in the vegimax is probably from Monsanto or something. It seems like Subway may use morningstar to supply their various vegetarian patties. While morningstar from what I know has some organic and vegan options, most use GMO, non-organic soybeans and like the above patties, have milk and/or egg in it. Oh well.

aww, you're just finding this out - poor thing.  I remember the sadness i felt when the same revelation was cast upon me - i was like "nooooooooooo, please let me live in sweet ignorant bliss" - *sighs*.

i don't frequest Subway's that much but when i do, i always get the veggie delight - still very very tasty!

Oh, and the black bean burger at Chili's has egg in it :(
But their porto mushrooms are awesome, and the rice and beans are safe.
Order the Veggie fajitas with no sour cream or cheese, extra pico and guac instead, and Cadillac style.

The Veggie Delight on Italian bread with no cheese or mayo at Subway is vegan. I think there may be another bread that is vegan too there.

beeps - you are my kind of gal.  Definitely extra pickle and has to be the sweet onion sauce.  Yum!

I am not certain, but I think a small amount of fruit and complex carbs are ok even for the yeast diet. Just avoid the simple carbs and refined sugar and you should be ok. Agave nectar or maple syrup are lower on the glycemic index and could be ok. Brown rice is fine, not sure about grits...are they whole grain?

Viva Le Vegan has a ton of wheat free recipes that have only complex carbs. I would try eating some bean dishes. And quinoa Its a seed that acts like a whole grain when you cook it, loaded with protien.

In a perfect world, these would be vegan... oh well. When I have to eat at Subway, I do the veggie delight. Can't go wrong there!

i can only imagine what a AWESOME experience it would be to go to a vegan sub place.

Where I attend college, there actually is a vegan deli/sandwich shop/bakery right in town! If i could afford to eat there more often, I would never step foot in the dining hall :)

Crap.  My husband is getting me one this very instant.  The website has nutritional info for everything BUT the Vegimax.  It says the 9-grain bread contains honey but is otherwise "clean." Depends where your line is I guess.  But I'm heart broken to find this out.  Ickies.

I had no idea they had veggies burgers....wouldn't go to Subway for veggie burgers anyway though.

One time oh well... Now you know... Like Saskia said over a year ago: Veggie delight no cheese no mayo on Italian bread is vegan. That's what I get whenever I go! Still an amazing sandwich and you can add tons of veggies :)

The sweet onion dressing is vegan?!  :D I've been getting plain mustard thinking it's the only thing because I'm a bit nervous to ask in french which of the dressings have no milk, cheese, eggs, etc! And the Italian bread here isn't like the Italian one in the US. We have a white bread and a separate Italian bread. Is the US Italian bread the white one?

yes it's white

I ate the veggie patty for months after an employee read me the ingredients leaving out the ones that weren't vegan. Wonderful...It's expensive anyway I guess.

I saw the veggie burgers on the menu once, about a year ago, and I've never seen one since, anywhere. Unfortunately, since I live in an absolute shit town, if I don't feel like cooking then it's Subway or Quiznos, so I'm quite familiar with their menu. A Veggie Delite is the way to go. I get the spicy brown mustard and the red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and oregano. So much flavor for just some veggies. Also, I have them put onions and peppers on the bread, then toast it. That helps add some flavor, too.

VR: What bread is vegan at Quiznos?

eta:
quiznos has a long chart of the allergens in the menu items:
http://www.quiznos.com/subsandwiches/Menu/PDFs/NutritionalInfo.pdf
though it doesn't have specific listings for bread, it does indicate that a veggie with wheat or white, no dressing or cheese, contains no dairy or eggs.

Thanks FB the first 2 links were great... the 3rd I didn't really see anything about ingredients

what fb said. I don't necessarily remember what the ingredients are at places, but I'll get on the website, figure out what's vegan, and then that's all I'll order there. So, I know what I can get at Quizno's and Subway, but I couldn't name all the specific vegan breads/sauces, etc. I have very limited eating out options!

oh, i linked to the wrong page on the 3rd one, sorry. Here it is:

http://www.quiznos.com/subsandwiches/Menu/PDFs/allergen_table.pdf

lists whether each type of sub has certain allergens, including dairy or eggs. the veggie (on white or wheat) w/o mayo and cheese appear to be vegan from here, or at least not containing dairy/eggs.
