Subway...

I usually don't post in forums, but this topic infuriated me so much that I had to let everyone know what has happened.

A little information, I have been vegan for about 9 months and before turning vegan had gone to numerous fast food restaurants. Obviously, turning vegan has limited my options immensely, but I have found a few chains, that I can for the most part trust. Subway is one of those options.  Over the past few months, I have noticed that the 3-4 subways in my area have stopped carrying carrots and spinach, which we all know both provide valuable nutrients to both vegans and omnis alike.  Also, when ordering a veggie sandwich, I had to ask 3-4 times to get an appropriate amount of veggies to make up for the lack of meat.  They employees seemed almost defensive for being bothered with a nonmeat eater's request.  Upon inquiry to the loss of my favorite veggies, I was told that they stopped carrying them.  I decided to take action and email the company directly, telling them why having more vegetables is obviously a healtier option, something that Subway has been claiming for years.  I urged my friends and family to also take action and let Subway know that these veggies needed to be brought back.  Today, my mother received this generic response from the company, basically saying to suck it up...

"Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding  one of the items offered at
SUBWAYR restaurant.

In order to consistently provide satisfaction to our customers by offering
high quality food with exceptional service that is a good value, we must
continuously review our menu and the ingredients that we use.

Occasionally, we find that some items are not popular, some have declined in
overall popularity, some are in short supply or are difficult to work with.
In order for us to make room on our menu and in our restaurants for new and
exciting foods, we must sometimes choose to not offer or discontinue items
from the national menu. Some locations may continue to offer discontinued
items as a local item.

We understand that this sometimes makes a customer's favorite food
unavailable. Please be assured that there are still many other great tasting
items at your local SUBWAYR restaurant. Perhaps one of them may be your new
favorite.

I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate you taking the time to
contact us.  SUBWAYR looks forward to your continued visits."

-------------------------

I would just like to urge everyone to take a stand against Subway and let them know that we will not tolerate their other "new and exciting foods".

Thanks for listening.

New and exciting meat, I bet they mean. Ahem. I'm pretty sure that my Subways have never offered carrots. Not sure about the spinach. It's been a while since I've been in a Subway.

So basically what the company is saying is, "We don't really care. You don't like it, take your business elsewhere." That's always a positive attitude. NOT.

I just went to subway for a quick dinner the other night, and it's true, they are so annoyingly sparse with the vegetables.  She literally put 3 olive slices on my sandwich, it was ridiculous and you do get tired of asking for more...

i've never had problems with not getting enough veggies.  i order the vegetarian (of course) they ask for cheese, i say none, they say which vegetables do you want i say all of them and they stuff them in there.  in other subway news, the chili dorritos that they have there are vegan.  *YAY!*

i do however sometimes get grouchy looks when i ask them to change their gloves, but then i just give them a tip and i dont think they care too much anymore.

I personally think it would be better if they stopped carrying something that wasn't selling well so it wouldn't just get tossed in the garbage at the end of the night.

Don't get me wrong, I know it sucks that you can't get everything you want on your sandwich.  Maybe you could add your own spinach and sliced carrots?

i always want to put avocado on my sandwich when i go there. if i remember and have one i take it to add to the sandwich. now that will fill you up.

Yes.  And mushrooms.

bp, its vegan if you get white bread, no cheese, and balsamic dressing instead of red wine. they let me in the back to read ingredients on everything at mine :)

I don't mind subway all the time, but I was really turned off by the idea of changing gloves, and also by the idea that I've worked in places where they prepare foods like that and the meat juices and such always drip into the veggies, and even if they do change their gloves they might not have changed them when serving a meat dish and then dipping their fingers into the veggies..

I've heard that Subways in California have avocado! (serious)

In regards to the OP, that sucks, but you can't expect a restaurant to keep carrying something that no one is buying, just because a few people like it.  I think their response was pretty polite and reasonable.  I mean, they're a business.

I don't think I've had a sub since going vegan.  I could go for one right now.

Seriously... I think every restaurant in CA has avocado.  I believe it's in the state's bylaws mandating avocado... business owners have to sign the papers in their own blood and everything! :D I love avocado!!

I don't like eating at subway because of where they put the knife they use to cut the sandwich in half after it is all assembled.... In the lettuce bin without cleaning it off! :o GROSS!!  So, if I do stop there I get a 6" veggie delight (no cheese), I ask them to change their gloves and they've always so nice about it after I tell them I'm vegetarian.  They do tend to skimp on the veggies, but I always ask for more.  Sometimes there are snotty and sometimes not.

Y'all crack me up.  :D

You can get avocado pretty much everywhere in California.  It never occurred to me that it wasn't as widely available in other places.

Oh yeah, well here in the northeast we have......apples!  Lots and lots of apples!  I bet you all don't have appples on your subs in Californiaaaaaaaa!  :P

That's awesome though.  Freakin avocado.  I never see avocado here.  It's not even my favorite fruit, but it's the principal of the matter.

Florida subways should have avocado :( Hmmphh.
Or like, oranges? Just so we can be all like, WE HAVE ORANGES YOU DONT. Even though that would be freaking weird on a sub (well you could make one that was good i'm sure, but not how i like my subs)

True that, but we need something cool in our subways.

Oh my goodness, it would be so awesome if like every state had a different topping that represents the state <3 Like maine could have lobster (not vegan! but its all i can think of), fl - oranges, cali - avo.....blah blah. i want that now. And i can go to all the states and get cool subs.
